Would you go out for the day to a place one hour and forty minutes away, so drive there for one hour, forty mins, spend the day there and then the same back-with a 6 year old? Or would you make a weekend out of it
Do you consider that a lot for one day?

TubeScreamer · 03/09/2025 16:28

Yes, I’d much rather make a day of things than stay over,

TheSquashyHatofMrGnosspelius · 03/09/2025 16:32

Mum and Dad took us to the seaside 2 or 3 times a year when we were that age and this would have been in an Austin A40 so in a modern car it would be a breeze. Usually got home at dusk or shortly after dark. Not a chance would they have considered it an overnight thing.

Yes - we have done theme park days where have driven 2+ hours with 4 and 6 year old . They sleep well on the way home after we have fed them !

Why on earth wouldn’t you??

Edenmum2 · 03/09/2025 16:44

really depends on what for OP?

axelswhitehair · 03/09/2025 16:45

I do this commute just to have dinner with my partner sometimes. If ive got the kids with me id do the commute for a day out without thinking.

Mabiscuit · 03/09/2025 16:47

My commute is 3.5hrs return but I never do a day trip further than an hour away!

Bloodyscarymary · 03/09/2025 16:48

It sounds like an unnecessarily long day to me - I would prefer to have an overnight stay somewhere if driving that long, especially as it might take a lot longer! Then everyone can have a wine in the evening (except the 6 year old).

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 03/09/2025 16:57

We would, but depending on the activity we might decide to stay overnight if the drivers are likely to be doing a lot of physical things during the day as well because its not fun driving a long way when tired. Plus being away can bring great opportunities to find something else in the area you'd like to see the next day before you come back, if you can afford to make a mini break of it. Six year olds often get quite excited at sleeping away from home, even if its just a Premier Inn :)

PeachySmile2 · 03/09/2025 16:57

Is this a serious question? It’s a mid-length drive, not a flight to the moon. I suppose it depends on whether you think the drive is worth it for just one day and if you have available funds to turn it into an overnight stay.

TempyBrennan · 03/09/2025 17:03

It takes us that long to get anywhere with any interesting activity, we’re 30 minutes to closest town, atleast 1hr 30 to the closest beach or national trust etc.

so yes, basically 😂

RawBloomers · 03/09/2025 17:04

With a 6yr old, I wouldn’t consider it a lot for a day out. If you were just going somewhere for an hour or two it would seem like a lot - would probably tack on something else so the two rides were spaced further apart.

When the kids were that age I’d be fine regularly taking them 2 hours each way without much of a thought about it, 3 hrs if there were two of us driving. Longer from time to time.

But I also like weekends away so I’d happily find it an excuse to sleep over if there was a hotel that did a semi-decent breakfast…

OhNoLostMyKeysAgain · 03/09/2025 17:04

I used to do this when my DCs were young.

itsgettingweird · 03/09/2025 17:07

I’ve done it in a day equally I’ve done it and booked a hotel for the night and come back the next morning.

Always for me depends on finances and time I have to away from home longer.

Homegrownberries · 03/09/2025 17:11

1 hour 40 minutes might not even get us very far with the traffic in our area. It's not that big a deal.

shuggles · 03/09/2025 17:22

thisfilmisboring123 · 03/09/2025 15:29

Do people usually take their 6 year olds to work?
Presumably that’s part of the reason why OP posted.

What has that got to do with it? I went on car journeys when I was 6. Except when we were 6, the only thing we had to entertain us in the car was books. Nowadays, there are tablets, video games, etc.

SabreIsMyFave · 03/09/2025 17:30

100%. And I have done it many times! 😃

It's around that to most seaside resorts from where I live. Can do a couple of them in 15-20 minutes less on a good run, but the 'seaside' is often an hour and a half roughly. (3 hours round trip.) Easy to do for a day trip! Smile

AnxietySloth · 03/09/2025 17:42

I think I'd feel silly staying for a weekend in a place so close to my home. Though I would maybe do it if there was enough to fill two days, and good evening activities (nice restaurants etc) and I had plenty of money. But not just to avoid the drive as that's not a particularly long drive. My kids' grandparents live about that away and we see them once a month, usually just for a few hours.

Pipsquiggle · 03/09/2025 17:43

I would do that in a day for a special day out e.g. a theme park or zoo

WhitePudding · 03/09/2025 17:54

That’s about the distance from my house to Stratford in London. We’d do it often when my kids were younger for a day trip. Very very occasionally a stay over in the Premier Inn there on a Sunday if a bank holiday Monday as generally they are cheaper on Sundays than a Saturday.

soupyspoon · 03/09/2025 17:55

I wouldnt think thats a long journey at all

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/09/2025 18:02

Depends on whether you mean in terms of the 6 year old, or the adult driving. We would have driven further than this for a day out with a young child with my DH driving, but I’m not keen on driving myself so would have normally stayed closer to home, stayed over or gone on public transport. I say ‘would have’, I haven’t changed, but DC now adult.

ScrambledEggs12 · 03/09/2025 18:07

I'd say anything up to 3 hours there and 3 hours back is fine for a day trip.

CarpetKnees · 03/09/2025 18:12

No idea how to vote as don't see what you are asking if YABU or not about, but of course I would, IF the incentive were there.

So - as you mention the beach - I live over two hours from any beach, so, with the incentive of a day at the seaside, which is something I can't substitute anything else for, I have to drive about 2.5 hours or we'd never have a day at the beach. OTOH, I wouldn't for a theatre show or concert as, where I live, there are half a dozen theatres with all sorts of different performances across the year. I do know of people that get on a coach to come here to see shows though.

People will take their dc across the country to get to Peppa Pig World or Thomas Land or Lego Land or a particular theme park or zoo or safari park if that's what they like doing, then 1 hour 40 is very, very do-able.

Many of us do a day visit to relatives or good friends much further away than that on a regular basis.

Odd that you think it is alien.

Bumblebee72 · 03/09/2025 18:23

For me it would depend entirely on the place and the reason for going.
