Anyone successfully stopped a dog from fouling outside your property

Im desperate. There is a dog that is repeatedly fouling outside our bins. I have no way of finding out whose dog it is. The problem is it’s a lane at the back of us but it’s a cul de sac - so the dog belongs to a neighbour . Ive tried vinegar and put up notices but it continues. Any ideas gratefully recieved!

Does bleach work?

Elsvieta · 02/09/2025 21:15

Tie a note to its collar asking them to keep it in their garden?

Put a ring video camera up there? You have an entrance at the back?

Sidebeforeself · 02/09/2025 21:17

No, no entrance at the back

Do you have a local whatsapp group etc?

Leave a message on it (and put up signs next to the bins) saying you will sprinkle raisins all around the bins. Wait a couple of days then do it.

Sidebeforeself · 02/09/2025 21:18

Im not sure I can pour bleach on a public area ..can I?

Citrus scented Zoflora is quite effective, I find.

No local WhatsApp group. We already have signs up saying no fouling but obviously the owners dont care. What will raisins do?? I dont want to make the dog ill as its not the dogs fault

Peanut butter on the poo and leave it in situ. Dog will attempt to eat it and owner will be desperately dragging along.

WearyAuldWumman · 02/09/2025 21:23

Zoflora won't hurt the dog, but it'll remove the smell of pee - thus discouraging dogs from repeated visits and the citrus smell does seem to have a deterrent effect.

I'm told that chilli powder works as a lost resort, but it can cause a dog to sneeze.

Sidebeforeself · 02/09/2025 21:25

It’s not peeing though ..did you mean poo?

As stated in my follow-up post, it gets rid of the smell of urine - and therefore the smell of other dogs - and the citrus seems to deter them.

My garden is next to a path leading to a park. Periodically, I splash the corners of my hedge and the edge of my driveway with diluted Zoflora - lemon, orange or lime. It seems to work.

wonderpetsrus · 02/09/2025 21:26

Apparently they hate the smell of jeyes fluid

That’s the most bizarre thing! Im not sure whether owner cares if they are letting their dog foul outside other peoples homes

I did mean pee, but I also have used it to clean up poo.

Sidebeforeself · 02/09/2025 21:27

@WearyAuldWumman Its worth a try!

This happened to me on quite a few occasions, and my family and I were sick of treading in dog shit outside my driveway.
I eventually caught the owner as I saw him with the dog having a crap (the dog not the owner 😁) in the usual spot when I looked out of my window one day,

I confronted the owner and he actually denied it was his dog, even though I'd just seen it happen! But it did stop for a couple of weeks, and I thought that was the end of it.
However, a while later I saw the dog out there again doing his business, and I was livid.
This time I followed the owner secretly to his house around the corner and went back and scooped the crap up and went and dumped it outside his front door, I only had to do this once more until it stopped completely. Giving them a taste of their own medicine usually works!

The only problem is that you have to keep using it. If I forget, then I'll get dog piddles or poo.

XenoBitch · 02/09/2025 21:28

The dog is not at fault here. It is the owner.
It is a human problem, not a dog one.

Many many years ago, I had a neighbour who let their dog shit in front of my gate daily. My son was just a baby, so pram in and out of the house.

I reported it to the council.

They sent a dog warden who put up stickers on the lamp posts and caught them doing it. I had a knock on my door saying they'd been fined a considerable amount. Never did it's business there again.

Not sure if they have dog wardens these days though. The amount of dog poo on the streets is absolutely appalling.

My late uncle actually dumped a doggy deposit on the owner's doorstep, knocked and said "I believe that this is yours."

Mind you, Uncle was a police sergeant at the time...
