to ask about a bumbag use on air travel?

Hi, I’m allowed a check-in case, and a cabin case, and a rucksack, all within the airlines specified measurements.

A friend has now suggested to me that I can also “wear” a bumbag.

I do not want to go ahead on that advice, turn up at the airport, to be told it’s not allowed, and I’m stuck with either (impossibly) trying to fit it in the (full) rucksack, or cabin case, or risk leaving it at the airport.

is there anyone who’s traveled Virgin Atlantic, who definitely knows that wearing a bumbag is allowed?

My gut feeling is that it’s fine, as it’s an item that stays on my body, rather like wearing a coat with deep pockets, or cargo trousers with pockets, and therefore not taking up space under a seat, or in an overhead locker.

Yes I guess bumbags may not be fashionable anymore, but I’m too ancient to fuss about that 🤣

Not a bumbag, but I travelled with Virgin Airlines last year and was allowed a cabin case and and a rucksack/handbag. I took a large handbag with my laptop etc in and a uniqlo over body bag- I was made to put that into my handbag for check in. I just popped it in the top though and took it back out again afterwards.

SummerEve · 02/09/2025 09:58

How much stuff are you intending on taking/ using during the flight? Surely a rucksack will cover it, unless it’s some mammoth journey.

Jaws2025 · 02/09/2025 09:58

I wear a small cross body bag just big enough for phone and passport - haven't been asked to remove it even on easyJet. I think a bumbag can be quite large though.

Bananachimp · 02/09/2025 09:59

Not virgin atlantic but last week I recalled with my alllocated hand luggage and a cross body small handbag without issue. My daughter had her luggage and a bum bag. As long as you get through check in there's zero issues, people walk onto the plane with all manner of duty free bags I find.

Bitzee · 02/09/2025 10:00

Security won’t care so long as there’s nothing prohibited in it so really it’s down to the discretion of the airline crew. Could always stick a jumper over it so they don’t notice?

Topseyt123 · 02/09/2025 10:04

I've often worn one and never had an issue. I usually have my currency, phone and passport easily to hand in it.

I've done this on all the usual airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2, TUI and easyJet.

Westun · 02/09/2025 10:07

I do usually take a bumbag for passports, purse, phone. But, it’s always pretty small and I leave space in my actual hand luggage to put it in if needed. I’ve only been asked on an easyJet flight to put it away but not on the larger long haul flights.

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 02/09/2025 10:10

I’ve never had a problem with a bum bag on BA, EasyJet and RyanAir. I just hide it under a hoodie or coat, just in case anyone says anything. For me, I have epilepsy medication and I can’t run the risk of someone picking up my cabin bag by mistake or my big bag not being loaded onto the plane. The bum bag never leaves my waist, even when I go to the loo as I’m so paranoid about not having my meds.

jamnpancakes · 02/09/2025 10:11

Put it in a shop carrier bag if you are that worried or put a jacket over the top.,

FollowSpot · 02/09/2025 10:16

There is a very strong chance that they will make you stuff it in your rucksack.

For the amount extra that you could fit in a bum bag, how is it worth the risk?

Why do you need it?

A v slim cross body that will hold passport, phone, credit card will be handy in the airport and fit in your rucksack.

TimeToStopLurking · 02/09/2025 10:19

I take either a small bum bag, or cross body bag that's tiny. Fits passport, bank, lipsil, tissues etc. Stuff men would have in pockets. Wish women's clothes had more pockets!
Easy jet made me put it in my bag once. Wasted time on board as I got it out again before sitting down. Really depends on the airline. If it's small and tucked into clothes you're unlikely to be made to put it into your other luggage in my experience.

SkunkCostFallacy · 02/09/2025 10:21

Buy Decathlon Compact Travel Bum Bag 2L - Black | Camping accessories | Argos
I have a smaller/thinner one from Uniqlo (a bit nicer than the argos one) , but it's not currently on their site.

Mokel · 02/09/2025 10:27

Slip a very small bag inside your hand luggage. Then once past security, remove the bag. Ideally a small crossover bag.
Very useful to have a few items on you on the plane. Especially when airlines like Jet2 and Ryanair don't have seat pockets for personal stuff.

Noshadelamp · 02/09/2025 10:29

Flown long haul with a few different airlines and always worn either a bum bug (under my clothes) or a very small swing bag that just fits my medication, lip balm, passport and phone.

I've never been worried about the bum bag as you literally can't see it under my top, but I've always left room to squeeze in the swing bag if needed in my rucksack.

Noshadelamp · 02/09/2025 10:30

Also if you're worried, contact the airline beforehand and ask.

wuminty · 02/09/2025 10:34

No offence, but are you emigrating with all that luggage?😊

Do as others suggested and get a tiny crossover soft little bag that's big enough for phone and passport. Personally I hate bum bags, I think they look ridiculous and can be bulky too. The crossover bag can be hidden under your top if necessary. I've never had an issue with one so far anyway!

TheThingsWeDo4Love · 02/09/2025 15:38

Hi, thank you to all of you lovely people for your helpful comments and ideas.

I had no idea whatsoever about soft crossover bags, and I only mentioned bumbag, as I have one at home, and thought that was my only “wearable” option.

I don’t need the wearable bag for anything other than a medication that needs to be at hand, and is quite bulky, as it needs to be in a cool bag too.
I do have a letter from the hospital to assure that I need this medication, so I hope that’s going to help.

No I’m not emigrating, I’m on a long (12 hour) flight plus the hours traveling from my home to the airport itself.

I am flying as I have a much loved relative who has illness themselves, as well as being the main (only) carer for their spouse, and their situation has suddenly worsened, and I’m going for as long as I can in order to give as much support as I can whilst they are in the initial stages of dealing with the problem.

May I also ask, as it’s only just occurred to me -
If my travelling clothing has pockets, I guess I would empty those so the contents can be inspected/scanned, but then, will I be able to return the objects to my clothing pockets, or must I travel with totally empty pockets?

Sorry for the extra question, but I genuinely hadn’t thought of it til now 🤦‍♀️

I wear a (very) small cross body bag and either tuck it up my jumper or put it in my jacket pocket. I think a small bumbag would be similar, but wouldn't try it for anything bigger than passport, phone and lipsalve.

You empty pockets for security, butbthen everything goes back into the pockets for the flight.

The size of the bags is checked at departures, not security.

I think if it's for medication, you're probably able to take that separately, but you'll need to check that with the airline.

Sparklehead · 02/09/2025 15:47

I always take a smallish (not tiny) cross body bag in addition to a backpack and a cabin bag. It’s big enough to contain my family’s 5 passports, my purse and phone, keys and tissues. It’s never occurred to me that this wouldn’t be allowed and it’s really useful having those important things easily to hand and not needing to keep rummaging in a rucksack. This is on Ryanair or EasyJet flights, so assume would be fine on long haul/less budget flights?

OldYorkMum · 02/09/2025 15:57

I take a small Uniqlo cross body bag with passport, purse, boarding pass etc, stuff that I wouldn’t want to lose if I mislaid my backpack or tote bag. For example if I left out bags with DH while I nipped to the loo, my wearable bag stays on me.
Never had an issue, but I do have space in my backpack/tote for it if necessary.

BTW bumbags are worn like a crossbody bag by the young and trendy, rather than around the waist.

No, not emigrating, but it’s a twelve hour flight, and I’m on a medication that I need to hand, I have a hospital covering letter to explain its necessity.
I had no idea of a soft crossover bag,and they do sound ideal.
I asked about bumbags because that’s what I have at home from years ago.
Now you good people have brought me up to date on better possibilities, I can seek one out to use.

Just thought of another question!

If any of my travel clothing has pockets contains whatever paraphanalia, does that mean I’d have to put all of that in my rucksack, and not keep those items in my clothi

Hi, quick update, I decided to phone Virgin Atlantic, and explained the luggage I already have, but could I also wear a crossover or a bumbag worn like a crossover, that would be containing my medication in a cool bag.
I also did that I had a letter from hospital that says the medication is for me by name.
Virgin Atlantic advisor
said “yes, it’s allowed”.

So as well as helping me, if any others are traveling via VA, I hope it also helps you.

Thank you again for all help and suggestions.

As PP, fine to stuff your pockets full of stuff but keep in mind that it is very easy for things to get lost in such long flights if they fall out of your pockets, and that it won’t be very comfy trying to snooze with full pockets either. Plane will likely be in dark night cycle for part of the flight, blankets and pillows everywhere, plastic bags the headphones come in, people taking shoes off, etc. it is VERY easy to lose things between seats, under seats, etc, on long haul flights. Whatever you take your stuff in, make sure it zips up fully.

amylou8 · 02/09/2025 17:10

I always travel with a bumbag. I keep it on during the flight with my passport, phone and airpods, like a secure pocket really. Never had an issue even on budgets.
