To make the kids walk 3miles to school?

DHdoingmyheadin · 02/09/2025 08:07

Due to ongoing roadworks, the main road through the village to my kids school is closed and will be for c. a month. We are right at the edge of where the roadworks are so we have two options:

(A) A 15 mile detour by car, down the road all the traffic is being funnelled down (a main A road that is congested even when the road through the village is open). Which I trialled yesterday, and took me 45 minutes each way. This was with no school traffic as schools go back tomorrow. So I’d be doing at least 90 minutes of driving each morning and DH 90 mins in the afternoon.

(B) The kids walk to school and back. 3 miles each way.

DH is adamant I can’t possibly expect them to walk. It’s hilly. It’s due to rain. I think they walk. I think it would be insane to drive when it’s literally faster for them to walk. It’s 3 miles. I’m not asking them to swim the channel and then scale Mount Everest. Kids are 12 and 13.

AIBU to put my foot down and refuse to drive?

I do. 😂

My closest station is Tonbridge but I get on the train at Hildenborough. Better walk, more chance to get a seat on the train. Cheaper parking when I do drive. And I walk at the other end more as well, as I get off at London Bridge rather than Charring Cross. Shocking though it might be to you, some people like exercise and aren’t lazy

so you walk 4 miles to hildenborough
arrive in London
walk 3 miles to your office?

The valid reason would normally be to go to a station that's better for where your office is located. But if you get into Charing Cross (from Battle) you can walk to basically all of central London in three miles so I can't think how your journey works at all.

Is it really any of your business how someone else chooses to do a journey?!

No where even close to the distances the op is doing.

LB to CC is nothing!

Can they cycle? Or walk one way and get lifts the other? Can you lift share with anyone locally?

The op walks past battle, being 0.5 miles from her front door, and carries on along country lanes and roads for another 3.5 miles

3 miles then 3 miles. So six miles either side.

Because I like walking and it’s good exercise. And unlike the vast majority of people on this thread, I don’t think a six mile walk is hard. It’s also a lot cheaper to do it that way.

The OP also never said she walked past battle. She said she doesn’t get on the train there. Even one stop closer to London the train tickets can be significant cheaper, so that’s also a logical reason for driving and then road parking near a different station.

OP is right. Isn’t she? You’re just a bit difficult.

Backfromholareyou · 02/09/2025 14:38

me because I use my ‘lunch hour’ every day to visit my elderly parents

so for half the week, you walk 4 miles to a station, arrive in London, walk 3 miles to your office. At 1pm you walk 3 miles back to your station, arrive in battle and walk 4 miles back to see your parents, then you wave goodbye and head back in to London?

You’re a rather unpleasant person

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/09/2025 14:41

Bikes - yes fine.
Walking - no it’s too far.

hydriotaphia · 02/09/2025 14:41

I feel that this walk is ok in nice weather, but twice a day in all weathers into winter is harsh. This would not be fun in the dark and driving rain, carrying school books. Can't you do the suggestion of leaving your car on the other sides of the roadworks on the 3 days a week when you commute into London? Or rideshare with other families? I would be looking into alternatives to supplement the walk.

Backfromholareyou · 02/09/2025 14:42

It takes you 15 mins to walk 3 miles @LandSharksAnonymous ?

* I walk an hour as part of my commute (15 minutes to the station, then from the station to the office and then repeat to go home)*

Powerof321 · 02/09/2025 14:46

I’d drive mine without a second thought.

Is walking 3 miles really going to be quicker? It’s going to be about the same time surely so you might as well be truthful and say it’s “insane” as you can’t be bothered sitting in traffic that long.

it is what it is & if your husband thinks they need picked up then he should do that so they are only walking in the morning and not 6 miles a day / 30 miles a week for a month

Hence me saying “half the week”

the op apparently does come back from London for lunch break

It’s on the Catsfield road! So when you leave Catsfield followed the bend around rather than going down Powdermills. Officially it’s called ‘Great Park Farm Nursery.’

They sell plants, like any nursery etc, but they also have a small farm shop with homemade quiches, cakes, locally sourced fruit and veg and have a cafe that does amazing coffees and cakes! Huge portions. A slice of cake feeds two comfortably and they have a huge selection of gluten free or vegan options. I’d recommend going early though. I went at 11am last weekend and it was heaving plus they’d run out of cake! You can also order their cakes well and pick them up from the shop.

(And sorry to everyone else who is being notified every time I post and is not at all invested in this farm shop - but seriously if you are even in the area the cake is incredible).

Thanks very much for the information. Not originally from this area so always keen to learn.

Middle Farm is local to us and DH likes to be there for 9:30, otherwise it's heaving. They have a good selection of locally grown produce and their scones are to die for. Being the National Cider Centre keeps DH happy and the freshly pressed apple juice is a hit with me.

We have been going to the Christmas Tree farm for about 10 years now Not been disappointed yet.

Hope the roadworks don't take too long, there was an article on the local news about it at lunch time today.

Edited as I hadn't said thank you

Is the road closed to pedestrians? If not I would keep my car parked the other side of the roadworks and go from there.

6 miles walking a day is quite a lot, it will be dark for the later part. Do the kids walk alone or will one of you need to do 2 x 6 miles round trips a day?

What time do schools finish where you live?

Its an hours walk max. If they come out at 3pm, they'll be home by 4.15pm even with faffing. It'll only be twilight for December and they aren't little kids.

It depends on their general level of maturity really.

You have outrightly lied on this thread
you say that your walk to the station is 15 mins and I merely enquired whether really do that in 3 miles as you say you do

It’s called a typo. Obviously I meant 45.

You really need to get a grip…

Ok wow what is wrong with people on this thread, people walk at different speeds its not a big deal and certainly not something to be arguing about 🤦🏻‍♀️ jeez xx

So 45 mins to walk to the station and 15 was a typo

but you say I walk an hour as part of my commute (15 minutes to the station, then from the station to the office and then repeat to go home

so typo 45 mins rather than 15
So you do the 3 miles once you arrive in London in 15 mins? Or is that another typo?
