Does anyone actually like their parents, as people?

If your parent wasn’t your parent, would they be your friend? I find it really difficult to be around both my mum and dad (separated.) They annoy me. I can’t work out if this is universal amongst adult children or if some people genuinely like their parents.

My history with my parents is complicated so I won’t go into it, but I do worry one day my kids won’t like me too. Or is this just characteristic of a complicated childhood? Do you like your parents?!

YABU - I like who my parent/s are as people (whilst maybe finding them annoying sometimes)

YANBU - I do not like who my parents are as people and wouldn’t choose them as a friend.

No, again partly because they are products of their generation and early circumstances and very racist and my mum is such a misogynist it’s quite mind blowing.

interestingly, my mum doesn’t have any friends so it’s not just me!

My dad is 80 and although I probably wouldn’t naturally have an 80 year old as a friend, I do genuinely really like him (as well as love him). We’ve always had a fairly good relationship but after my mum died suddenly we were thrown together in our grief and we formed a really close bond. We both have the same dark sense of humour and when times are tough it’s almost a competition to see who’s going to say the funny/quirky/dark thing first.

He got remarried a few years ago and his wife also has the same sense of humour so we kind of all ‘get’ each other. He’s just had major surgery and I’ve supported him through it. On the days he was really poorly, it was so hard to see him not like himself. Thankfully he’s much better now.
