Husband Vs Sat Nav...AIBU

IncaAztec · 31/08/2025 20:55

I have had a reasonably new car and today went to collect a child from a friend's house with my husband in my car. I had previously stated I had got lost going to this place before and put my Sat Nav on. For my husband to turn it off saying the voice was annoying and HE WOULD BE THE SAT NAV instead. He then proceeded to tell me the directions all the way there..like a Sat Nav would...AIBU to think this is strange behaviour???

Not really, if he knew the way and could direct you you didn’t need the sat nav on.

intrepidpanda · 31/08/2025 20:56

Was he just saying turn lett, turn right or was he mimicking the robot voice?

IncaAztec · 31/08/2025 20:58

He was like an actual Sat Nav. Folks also use Sat Nav to know the speed limit, cameras and arrival time so I was baffled. Can anyone unpick this?

If you missed the turn did he say 'Recalculating'

MonGrainDeSel · 31/08/2025 21:04

Sat navs are better than people. They tell you useful things like what lane to be in before you need to be in it, which is handy if it's very busy or an unfamiliar place. They tell you the speed limit. They tell you if there is congestion ahead and ask if you want to go another way. I would prefer to be directed by a sat nav rather than my husband (who is fine at directions and not especially annoying but still not as good as a sat nav).

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/08/2025 21:09

Wow, can he tell you there's even an accident on Normal Road so you need to use Alternative Way instead?

toomuchfaff · 01/09/2025 09:25

If you don't like being in my car, you can always walk? No, stfu and ill stick the sat nav on.

JacquelineHigh · 01/09/2025 09:49

He's a twat. There. Unpicked it for you.

Yeah, there's no deep mystery here. He's irritating, a bit controlling perhaps (whether you want the sat nav on is not as important as the fact it annoys him, in his view) but he thinks he's funny.

MageQueen · 01/09/2025 10:00

Yes, agree with PPs. he's a bit of a twat.

I have a friend who uses sat nat for almost every trip, at max volume. Drives me absolutely mad and I find it unbearable... but she's driving and its her car so I suck it up. Your DH should do the same or, at worst, ask you nicely if there's a way that he can direct you without him having to listen to the sat nav.

I assume he is not-so-subtly actually making it clear that he thinks you're a wuss for needing sat nav in the first place?

Zempy · 01/09/2025 10:02

Why didn’t you tell him to get out?

What a wanker!

Tontostitis · 01/09/2025 10:07

Today I learned people have the volume on on their sat navs

Coffeeandprocrastination · 01/09/2025 10:21

My ex always thought he knew better than Sat nav. Meant we’d get stuck in traffic jams/hold ups because of it.

Lurker85 · 01/09/2025 10:22

He’s a controlling twat. Your car, you’re driving, up to you. I’d tell him the sat nav isn’t half as annoying as his voice and put it back on.

My husband does this 🙄. He half the time follows it and the other "knows better" which often causes issues

Twistedfirestarters · 01/09/2025 10:47

The whole interaction sounds odd to me, I assume there are issues between you?!

In a normal healthy relationship surely he would suggest directing you as he knew the way rather than switching the sat nav off. You would say thanks but I like having it on for the cameras/speed limits etc rather than just accepting him turning it off

Can anyone unpick the behaviour of the man you married based on this one contextless incident? Err, no.

Did he think this was humorous? Was he trying to wind you up? Was he implying he’s in some way superior to you? Was he having a laugh, and if so were you laughing? Did you ask him why he was doing it or just drive in silence? Did you ask him to stop? Does he have form for being dismissive, controlling,
or weird? Does he often override your decisions or tell you what to do? Is he neurodivergent? Are you?! Do you often have baffling interactions without any further discussion?

Why would a bunch of internet randos be able to interpret his behaviour better than his own wife? The whole thing is completely bizarre.

drivingmetomywitsend · 01/09/2025 11:31

I use my satnav all the time, but never have the voice on as it drives me mad. I do have it tell me if there’s a better route or congestion though.

A passenger pretending to be a satnav would be told to shut up or get out….

dodobedo · 01/09/2025 11:32

I'd be tempted to tell him to shut the fuck up

LoveSandbanks · 01/09/2025 11:36

We have a rule - he/she who is driving chooses the sat nav and the music/podcast. In reality my dh finds it so difficult not to tell me (a 57 year old woman with almost 40 years driving experience) how to drive/which way to go that I practically refuse to drive with him in the car.

frankly, I wouldn’t have accepted the turning off of the satnav, how much the voice annoys the passenger isn’t fucking relevant!

It does make me smile when the Satnav says 'prepare to go straight on" though.

A few weeks ago I discovered some people don’t…. When my husband missed the turn we needed to take to get to where we were going (somewhere new so I didn’t know either). I commented that I hadn’t heard the sat nav, and he said he has the volume off. I sort of get it if you aren’t using it for directions, but surely if going somewhere new you want the volume on so you aren’t trying to watch the screen and the road at the same time?

She didn't need the Satnav voice he adopted
