Retiring right now

Retiringrightnow · 30/08/2025 19:38

I am retiring right now. I have no mortgage or debts and 120k savings. I have index linked pensions that add up to around 40k pa. I have a house that I love in an area that I adore. I live alone with my wee cat. I have 2 kids that I have already helped to buy their own houses. Am i unreasonable feeling insecure?

OP you are in an absolutely fine place for a decent retirement. Go and enjoy yourself!

PennySweeet · 30/08/2025 19:42

You forgot to add 'A tendency to boast on the internet' to your list of 'I haves' 😁

Neededa · 30/08/2025 19:43

Yes

CreationNat1on · 30/08/2025 19:44

What age are you?

Biskieboo · 30/08/2025 19:44

Yes. Next.

FenderStrat · 30/08/2025 19:44

Bit of a humble brag.
I'm pretty certain you know full well a pension of £40 000 is pretty good.

LimoncelloSpritzplease · 30/08/2025 19:44

Good for you OP count your blessings.

BeyondMyWits · 30/08/2025 19:44

You sound to be in a good place... change CAN bring its own challenges, but don't let worry about tomorrow steal the joy from today.

Clariana · 30/08/2025 19:48

I understand @Retiringrightnow . I retired 2 months ago after prevaricating for years. When is enough money going to be enough for the rest of your life?

Anyway, you are fine, retire and enjoy. I realised almost as soon as I retired that I should have done it ages ago!

Why on earth haven’t you done it already!

EchoedSilence · 30/08/2025 19:51

You will surely starve.

EmeraldRoulette · 30/08/2025 19:51

Fantastic pension! I won't have anything like that when I retire.

There is a lot of things I haven’t got. I just listed the haves.

As long as you bulk out all meals with lentils and wear 5 layers so as not to use your heating I'm sure you will survive.

Congratulations! You deserve to retire! Enjoy

Navigatinglife100 · 30/08/2025 19:58

So, as you are 64, you'll get more when the state pension kicks in too?

You don't have a huge amount of savings but with that income - and the potential for more with SP. If they increase with inflation you are in a good place!

Now find some hobbies to fill your time!

Yes. I got lots of hobbies. I will be honest the main thing is health. I’m generally healthy but had a health issue recently that scared me. I got to keep healthy because I’ve got very little support if anything happens. I love lots of things and not worried about filling my time as I’m wondering how to fit it all in.

Sounds fab!

I semi retired at 56. Work about a day a week from home and have since inherited my Dad (although, sadly, he's in hospital currently). Never regretted leaving full time work - I was ready for it!

Thedogscollar · 30/08/2025 20:07

Hi@Retiringrightnow
Maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure you're not asking about financial security as that sounds absolutely fine.
Are you feeling insecure in that you feel you will have no role as such and therefore will be feeling invisible non productive?
I'm retiring next year and I can't wait. I've been in the NHS since 1986 so you can imagine my desire to leave now. As much as I'm looking forward to it I get that it's going to be a big life change from being a whatever to being a retired whatever.

marmaladegranny · 30/08/2025 20:11

Set yourself some targets! Find a volunteering role, does not need to be more than a few hours a week but to get you out regularly and for the feel-good feeling of doing something for others. Getting a dog will get you out twice a day - but the cat may object. Seek out your local u3a to learn a new skill and ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’. These are the things that are giving me a great retirement, on half your pension….

Retiringrightnow · 30/08/2025 20:13

@Thedogscollar i am nhs as well. For many years. It does feel the right time. I think i was just worried that 100k (120k) in savings is enough to last a lifetime. I was always very generous to my kids and everyone else. I think i need to actually think of myself mainly from now on. 120k is all very well for myself but i need to curb the need to subsidise my kids probably.

i really don’t feel like volunteering. It’s what everyone suggests. I love the u3a and its whole ethos and will join every group that i can. Meanwhile I took up golf recently and I run and do all the gym classes. I don’t want a dog as im not sure I like them. They are a lot of work. My wee cat is a love. But when he is gone i won’t get another. I just got him because he needed a home from a friend of my sons. I’m not a natural animal lover.
