Something happened to me earlier today that has really upset me and I dont know what to make of it. If anyone else has had a similar experience, or can give some insight into it I'd be interested to hear about it.
I live in a market town and went into the local jewellers to look for a necklace for my cousin's 60th birthday next week. I eventually found a lovely silver necklace priced at £145 . I particularly liked it because it was a good size particularly 'across ' where it looked about an inch and a half wide in a kind of elongated diamond shape with sort of knotty twists. I could imagine it sitting very well on my cousins neck and thought it was a really good price. I pointed it out to the lady behind the counter and she took it out of the cabinet and said she was " going out the back to clean it "for me. She was gone about 10 minutes which I thought was a bit odd. I just stood around waiting getting increasingly confused as to why she had disappeared. I even asked the other lady behind the counter where she had gone as I had bought a necklace and the lady had gone off with it and seemingly not come back. Eventually she did reappear and when she laid the necklace on the counter I could see it was smaller than the one that had been in the cabinet. I said I'm sorry but I dont think that is the same necklace as I chose. I explained that I chose it especially because it was quite wide and I thought it would sit well on my cousin' s neck. I said i can definitely see it isnt as big as the one that was in the cabinet. She said it was the same necklace that I had chosen. She then rang it up and it was £ 125. I said " Look it can't be the same necklace because the one in the cabinet says £145 and you've just rung up £ 125 so it must be a smaller one. She then got out the catalogue and showed the page for my necklace and there were 3 sizes. I said are these the actual size because I can see that the biggest one is the one that was in the cabinet . She said yes they were pictures of the actual size. I could see quite clearly that the biggest one was exactly the one from the cabinet. Her and the other woman then started behaving defensively and saying if i wasnt happy I didnt have to buy it. She said she hadnt shrunk it and sort of laughed nervously. In the end I bought it but I felt something weird was going on. I dont know why she was out the back for 10 minutes supposedly cleaning a necklace that already looked really pristine. I know im not mad, I know the necklace Isaw and I know 100% it wasn't the necklace I saw in the cabinet. Admittedly I only paid £125 but I wanted the one from the cabinet that was priced at £145. I just dont know what was going on. I dont know if the woman was incompetent, or trying to scam me in some way that I can't quite work not, or if the shop itself was up to something scamming customers. Was she going to charge me £145 if I hadn't complained ?? What the hell was going on ? I feel really pissed off because the larger necklace was much nicer than the one i was given and also I feel like some manipulation was going on but I still can't quite work out what. It has really upset me. It's a very popular jewellers in the town. I dont know whether to take it further but it's my word against theirs and I wasnt charged more. I just feel something isn't right and it has made me angry. Can anyone shed any light in this. I honestly dont think i am being unreasonable to think that something weird was going on. I went very quiet as I walked out of the shop and sort of grunted as they were still trying to defend themselves, but I reslly felt like slapping the pair of them because I felt like they were somehow taking me for a ride. But I can't prove it.

Why would you have bought it? I’m not sure who’s crazier, the shop staff or you!

Go back and get a refund.

WaitWhatWhatWait · 30/08/2025 19:10

Why did to buy something you didn't want?

TheWytch · 30/08/2025 19:11

Why did you buy it? I would have just left it and gone elsewhere.

Bit it wasn't the same price as the one in the cabinet . I wasn't being g charged more. But that's the point. Why give me a smaller one if they didn't charge the same as the one in the cabinet. What were they actually up to. That's what i want to know. The fact I boughtbthe smaller one I'd neither here nor there. I'm trying to sussnout what they were doing.

The weird thing going on is surely that you bought an expensive item that you didn't want. Why did you do that?

But that's not the point for goodness sake. I'm trying to work out what they were actually trying to do. What( if it was was their scam.

Did you actually want the smaller one?

Maybe when she took it to clean it, she accidentally broke it and tried to fix it then cover up her mistake.

Digdongdoo · 30/08/2025 19:17

It's not a scam. It's a bit annoying but you didn't have to buy the other necklace. They probably misplaced or broke the other one or didn't want to sell the display one. Who knows.

I liked the design and wanted it for my cousin I didn't HATE the smaller one . I just dont know what it was all about. It was weird. What I'm trying to ascertain is what they might have been up to.

DedododoDedadada · 30/08/2025 19:33

Maybe they had more of the smaller ones to shift because they are less popular or she wanted to keep the bigger one for herself.

GoldenGeishaGirl · 30/08/2025 19:33

They sold you a necklace for the same value as it’s advertised worth. That’s not a scam. If you don’t want it, take it promptly back for a refund. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

But it is the point. You looked at it. You weren't happy with it. But you bought it.

BTW I adore Silver and have a lot of it. Necklaces in silver take a lot of time to clean up. And I would polish one that many people think of as already polished - I know it isn't.

That doesn't mean that something wasn't odd, but her version is believable. Buying something you aren't happy with is the unbelievable bit. Why would you do that?

KrisAkabusi · 30/08/2025 19:38

Why on earth did you buy it if you were so sure it wasn't the one you asked for?

I think all you can do is go back, look for the £145 model on display and ask them why they told you the £125 was the largest one you actually wanted.

goingtotown · 30/08/2025 19:42

How do you expect mumsnet to know what happened when the assistant took the necklace away, she said it was for cleaning. If you wasn’t happy with what you say is a smaller necklace why did you buy it?

PInkyStarfish · 30/08/2025 19:45

It may be they are told by the owner not to sell display items and when she took it out the back they didn’t have another in that size so she hopes you would buy the smaller one which you did.

i can’t see any scam whatsoever.

I don’t understand why you bought the smaller one, that is the most bizarre thing.

gamerchick · 30/08/2025 19:46

The one you wanted was probably the only one of that size they have and they want to shift the smaller ones. The one you liked is probably the pull for sales.

If you're not happy,.take it back and get a refund.

DiscoBob · 30/08/2025 19:52

It's not really a scam because you saw it looked smaller and still decided to buy it.

What would she gain by making it shorter and then reducing the price? Unless you think she's doing that to all the necklaces and then she weighs up the excess and sells it for scrap and keeps the money? There would be CCTV in there so I doubt she'd get away with that.

In the catalogue the length must have been written in there? So you could measure it and see which it was?

I don't see why you bought it when you were certain it wasn't the right size.

OneKhakiFish · 30/08/2025 19:53

She didnt want to sell you the display model, you didnt want the smaller necklace but you bought it anyway! Cant see a scam, you shouldve said no

Lifestooshort6591 · 30/08/2025 19:59

It does sound weird. Think I would have walked out.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 30/08/2025 20:01

I think the display one likely had a fault and they didn’t have any spares. She still wanted the commission so tried (and succeeded) in flogging you the slightly cheaper one. She was uncomfortable because you noticed.

I wouldn’t have bought it. I’m not being taken a fool. Return it and ask to speak to the manager.

I'm thinking this is the most likely reason. I'm wondering if jewellers do that? That's what I wad asking actually. Has anyone else noticed things like this happening in a jewellers ? Are they known for this kind if things?

I genuinely think it was a slightly bizarre situation, not a scam. And I still don't get Why you bought it???
