Scam ??

Something happened to me earlier today that has really upset me and I dont know what to make of it. If anyone else has had a similar experience, or can give some insight into it I'd be interested to hear about it.
I live in a market town and went into the local jewellers to look for a necklace for my cousin's 60th birthday next week. I eventually found a lovely silver necklace priced at £145 . I particularly liked it because it was a good size particularly 'across ' where it looked about an inch and a half wide in a kind of elongated diamond shape with sort of knotty twists. I could imagine it sitting very well on my cousins neck and thought it was a really good price. I pointed it out to the lady behind the counter and she took it out of the cabinet and said she was " going out the back to clean it "for me. She was gone about 10 minutes which I thought was a bit odd. I just stood around waiting getting increasingly confused as to why she had disappeared. I even asked the other lady behind the counter where she had gone as I had bought a necklace and the lady had gone off with it and seemingly not come back. Eventually she did reappear and when she laid the necklace on the counter I could see it was smaller than the one that had been in the cabinet. I said I'm sorry but I dont think that is the same necklace as I chose. I explained that I chose it especially because it was quite wide and I thought it would sit well on my cousin' s neck. I said i can definitely see it isnt as big as the one that was in the cabinet. She said it was the same necklace that I had chosen. She then rang it up and it was £ 125. I said " Look it can't be the same necklace because the one in the cabinet says £145 and you've just rung up £ 125 so it must be a smaller one. She then got out the catalogue and showed the page for my necklace and there were 3 sizes. I said are these the actual size because I can see that the biggest one is the one that was in the cabinet . She said yes they were pictures of the actual size. I could see quite clearly that the biggest one was exactly the one from the cabinet. Her and the other woman then started behaving defensively and saying if i wasnt happy I didnt have to buy it. She said she hadnt shrunk it and sort of laughed nervously. In the end I bought it but I felt something weird was going on. I dont know why she was out the back for 10 minutes supposedly cleaning a necklace that already looked really pristine. I know im not mad, I know the necklace Isaw and I know 100% it wasn't the necklace I saw in the cabinet. Admittedly I only paid £125 but I wanted the one from the cabinet that was priced at £145. I just dont know what was going on. I dont know if the woman was incompetent, or trying to scam me in some way that I can't quite work not, or if the shop itself was up to something scamming customers. Was she going to charge me £145 if I hadn't complained ?? What the hell was going on ? I feel really pissed off because the larger necklace was much nicer than the one i was given and also I feel like some manipulation was going on but I still can't quite work out what. It has really upset me. It's a very popular jewellers in the town. I dont know whether to take it further but it's my word against theirs and I wasnt charged more. I just feel something isn't right and it has made me angry. Can anyone shed any light in this. I honestly dont think i am being unreasonable to think that something weird was going on. I went very quiet as I walked out of the shop and sort of grunted as they were still trying to defend themselves, but I reslly felt like slapping the pair of them because I felt like they were somehow taking me for a ride. But I can't prove it.

Fair enough.

I think i got snippy because I was so proud of the jeweller i worked for, and the staff who were expert at their jobs, its not just flogging sparkly stuff! . So when you said 'do jewellers do this' it touched a nerve.

They should have come out and said why it wasnt for sale, that this was the finer version. You probably would still have bought it but it left a bad taste.

So yeh they were unprofessional, possibly not dishonest though. And its not endemic in the industry I dont think

I hope she likes it.

Edited

I'm sure not all jewellers are like that. But the incident was weird. It definitely didn't feel right. The plain fact was that i pointed out a bigger one and a smaller one came back out, and the assistant made a big deal of how it was exactly the same necklace when it very clearly wasn't. What she was up to, I will never know.

Then why carry on with the transaction? You are 100% certain that something dodgy is happening, why the hell do you buy it anyway and then spend hours arguing about it with people that can't possibly know?! Why did you not just leave if you were so certain that they were up to something! And why can't you see that this is a reasonable question?

Why should I lose out on buying a necklace because someone else might be being dishonest. And as for spending hours arguing about it with people who dont know. I was wondering if other people had had similar experiences or if this was maybe some known scam or something. I'm sticking up for the points I'm making.

Well we've all tried to guess and if you dont know when you were in the shop my crystal ball has given up the ghost.

Im sure she'll love it and I wouldn't ruminate over scams and dodgy jewellers and just enjoy giving it to her.

God knows why everyone is jumping on you and trying to make an argue after a very innocent request for advice/ opinion...I think a bit too much wine is flowing tonight possibly!

Exactly. Just weird behaviour. Started at the first reply to my post to be honest. And my post was just a request for information really, as you point out. Some people have been constructive and helpful with their comments , but many have taken the opportunity to be unpleasant. When that happens over something as ( quite frankly) minor as my post, you really start to realise that some people on here are just.looking for any excuse to have a go. It's a bit depressing when you think they may be the same types of people who are the bullies in offices or schools or uni or in your family. People who want to get a reaction out of you because they have some problem in their own life ..According to some people's posts I am apparently some kind of raging psychopath just because I went ahead and bought the other necklace even though I thought something funny was going on. Oh well. What the hell. Don't think I'll bother coming on ' mumshit' again.

Because people who still buy it anyway are exactly the reason scammers Keep getting away with it?

JMSA · 31/08/2025 07:38

To be fair to the OP, it’s an odd situation. The women in the shop gaslit her completely. And if they broke the original necklace or ran out of stock, they should have just been honest with her.
OP, I would take it back for a refund as you’re never going to feel good about this gift now.

Daygloboo · 30/08/2025 20:15

And how would I know if it's a regular con trick. I only went in once. Your post is illogical. And, frankly, rude.

The only person on this thread being unnecessarily rude is you. You have had loads of people saying the same things - WHY did you buy a necklace that you KNEW was not the one that you wanted? That is the only illogical thing on the thread.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 31/08/2025 08:00

I understand why you feel like you do.

I don’t think it was a scam but I think the assistant may have given you the smaller one on purpose as they were the only ones left so you’re right to feel deceived in some way. I know everyone says you shouldn’t have bought it and I’m guessing you wouldn’t have in hindsight but we all do things in the moment and then think back and feel cross with ourselves. If she did swap it for a smaller one (to keep that one as the display model) then of course you will feel upset at this. It will have made you feel like you were going mad.

The good thing is this one was cheaper. Ask yourself if you’re happy paying what you did for the smaller one and if not, take it back and while you’re there ask to compare it to the larger one on display.

But you still chose to buy an alternative version at a lower price, so from their pov a win-win if there was any deliberate swap. If you felt that uncomfortable why would you not have refused and continued to look elsewhere.

Yes I am. I make and sell it, both directly from me and via selected shops and galleries.

Maybe the display one was broken and she couldn’t fix it in time and panicked. Maybe you got a knock off version.

Either way I’d go back and get a refund, and check if the original is back in the cabinet!

Daygloboo · 01/09/2025 18:20

I'm laughing my head off here. I've just seen something on the news about high end jewellers in London ripping people off with a diamond heist to the tune of about a hundred and fifty million. So much for people in the jewelry business on here telling me its more than their lives are worth than to swindle anyone. You couldn't make it up. 😂😂😂

Went past today. Different necklace in the same spot on the stand . God knows what the hell they were up to. Just plain weird.

Could you see the fastenings in the display cabinet? And if not, is it possible that it was displayed in a way that made it look longer than it was? Sometimes the whole chain is displayed and only the fastenings are hidden.

I was thinking this. Necklaces are sometimes displayed on ‘necks’ / boards that are a smaller scale than normal, so appear larger. You see this often on online shops where it helps to display something relatable like a coin next the item.

It would be interesting to go in again and actually measure the display necklace or simply say you don’t want it cleaned so it doesn’t go out of sight. It would be extremely awkward but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t sell it to you. Get a friend to go in with you or on your behalf.

Sometimes they have signs saying ‘for display only’ etc. so it’s weird they went though the pretence of cleaning it when they were actually getting another. I’ve bought jewellery form display cabinets and they’ve given me one that are stored elsewhere in a packet so they can put the one I chose back on display straight away - but there was nothing dodgy about it and they told me that’s what they were doing.

I can see why you feel odd about it. It is odd.

Edited - Just read update - ok

Im laughing at how invested you are in this thread considering you came on to the am I being unreasonable section when you've been unreasonable.

I say this because

You were shown three necklaces in the catalogue.

You knew yours was 145

You said you thought the one they brought out was smaller.

You paid 125 for it

Why did you not say 'ah but mine was the 145 one, could you order it in for me'

Again, in spite of your snarky attitude in light of my considered and polite answers I do hope your cousin likes the cheaper necklace, and I hope this experience has made you more assertive when you quite obviously could see in the catalogue that it wasn't the one you asked for.

Actually, you got that wrong. I pointed to the necklace on the stand in the cabinet at £145 on the price tag underneath. BEFORE I was presented with the catalogue..I could be wrong here, but I reckon if you are shown something in a shop at a certain price then you have the right to buy that thing at that price. I think I was making a valid point from the start.. I went into a shop and pointed to a necklace and a smaller one appeared for god knows what reason. I was upset because clearly there had been some kind iof switch for whatever reason. That I then got ' told off ' by people for buying the smaller one was NEVER the point. That's an entirely separate issue. I was genuinely on here ro find out whether others had experienced similar incidents and whether perhaps jewellers are known for that. I was arguing my point, which I am allowed to do when other people become silly about things. Genuine criticism is ok but when people immediately veer off at a tangent just coz they so obviously want to have a go without even addressing the main point then it just gets stupid. And I'll be as invested as I like in this thread thank you very much. Or are you the thread police and do I have to pay a fine.
