To ask if anyone else finds supermarket shopping stressful?

Just been to Asda and it was hell, entire families doing the shopping, kids running up and down aisles and screaming at top note, groups of young teenagers shouting and messing around, it's just a stressful environment.
I have misophonia which doesn't help but I don't think kids should be allowed to run up and down supermarkets shrieking.

Online shopping is the best.

FionnulaTheCooler · 30/08/2025 16:53

I don't find it stressful but I do my big shop at Aldi and have it down to a fine art. I meal plan and go prepared with a list, I know my way around so I can be in and out in 20 minutes as long as the checkouts aren't too busy.

FenderStrat · 30/08/2025 16:53

Parents letting their kids run around screaming in public places is becoming more common as the standard of parenting declines.

Could you not wear noise counseling headphones or have your shopping delivered.

MyDogHumpsThings · 30/08/2025 16:54

Yes! Feral kids, unbelievably slow adults who walk in the centre of the aisle, people leaving their trolleys across the aisle when they’re spending 263 years deciding which yoghurt to buy, which is probably the same one they buy every week.

landlordhell · 30/08/2025 16:55

This is why we go to Lidl or Aldi. Takes about 20 mins. Fast staff at checkout. Smaller choice just makes it less overwhelming . Also never go on a Saturday afternoon. There no need these days as they have such long hours.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHaveDone · 30/08/2025 16:55

So stressful that I do home delivery and, once a week when I need top ups or any bits that weren’t delivered, I’m at the supermarket at opening time so it’s quiet.

PennySweeet · 30/08/2025 16:55

I haven't physically shopped in a supermarket for over 10 years.

Even all through covid I managed to get regular weekly deliveries.

Noname973 · 30/08/2025 16:56

I do my shopping on line unless I need a couple of bits. Feels like a waste of time to go shopping for me.

tulippa · 30/08/2025 16:56

I normally do click and collect but went in today as didn't need too much for the week. I won't be making a habit of it! Felt like I was the only one in all of Tesco who was looking where they were going and got really fed up with people stopping and leaving their trolleys placed across the aisle so no-one could get past. Then at peak stress the over friendly greeter person they have popped up in the gravy section to say "Have a lovely day!" I wasn't in the mood for positivity at that point! 😬🤣

Cathkidson36 · 30/08/2025 16:57

Yes I may start doing it online,or go during quiet hours. People stopping in the middle of the aisle too to have a long chat wth?

Sometimes. It certainly was today as it’s raining plus still holiday season here in Cornwall so every bugger was out shopping. And I know shelf stacking has to be done but it seems to be more during the day than it used to be so you end up battling through all the massive cages to get to stuff. Plus why don’t more supermarket car parks have more than one entrance/exit?

uhOhOP · 30/08/2025 16:59

You should go to Waitrose instead.

Petrolitis · 30/08/2025 16:59

I hate it.

Too many colours, smells, noise, temperature changes.

It's sensory overload

MrsMillyFluff · 30/08/2025 17:00

I despise food shopping so much that I always use online shopping. In an ideal world I'd shop at Aldi, but our local shop has narrow aisles and always people in the way 😫

Digdongdoo · 30/08/2025 17:02

Home delivery is your friend. But it's Saturday afternoon, of course it's busy.

InMyOpenOnion · 30/08/2025 17:02

I don't find it stressful myself, but I usually go early in the morning when it's not very busy. I haven't done a full shop on a Saturday afternoon for ages. I remember it being really busy back in the day, but I would have hoped it would be better nowadays, what with online shopping, click and collect and more people WFH able to shop during the week.

WorthySloth · 30/08/2025 17:02

Used to have my shopping delivered but now I use Tesco scan and shop. Dead easy. Walk around with my headphones in and stick my shopping straight into the bags.

Winteriscoming80 · 30/08/2025 17:03

Yes with Aldi especially when half the isle is blocked with cages.

havanesehope · 30/08/2025 17:06

Done online grocery shops for years, just nip into supermarkets for a few bits every few weeks or so. My eyes struggle with the lights in there.

Comedycook · 30/08/2025 17:07

I love food shopping but not at the weekend...then yes it is a stressful experience

Chompingatthebeat · 30/08/2025 17:07

Why would anyone go to a supermarket if they didnt have to?

AhBiscuits · 30/08/2025 17:08

I don't but I tend to go at about 9pm when it's very quiet and my kids are in bed.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 30/08/2025 17:09

On line shopping is a great invention.

Fifthtimelucky · 30/08/2025 17:12

Obviously some people don’t have a choice, but I would never go on a Saturday.

I have a regular date with Tesco during one of its quiet hours: the lights aren’t as bright and there is no background music. It’s reasonably early in the morning (9-10) so in term time most children will be at school and in the holidays they probably aren’t up.

Much more relaxing!

WalkDontWalk · 30/08/2025 17:13

Nope. I quite enjoy it.
