On holiday and they’ve taken the key and won’t answer their phone

On holiday with a family member. We don’t always see eye to eye, but I thought this trip might be a chance for a bit of a reset.

Today we decided to do different things.

Normally I’ve had the apartment key when we’ve gone out together, but I asked them to pop it in the key safe this time. For whatever reason, they didn’t — and with their phone switched off I can’t get hold of them.

I’m making the best of it with a quiet day to myself, but I can’t help feeling a bit upset. It’s left me feeling quite stuck, literally and figuratively. I can’t leave the apartment! I’d never want to make someone else feel like that.

Any advice on how to handle the rest of the trip without letting this sour everything?

I didn’t see the luggage tag post - what is the crux of what happened?

is this tit for tat?

You say the apartment owner doesn’t want you using the key safe - but why would they have one if you aren’t to use it, and how do they expect people to manage if people staying are going out doing different things but only 1 key?

Why are you ignoring your sisters calls but happy to come onto Mumsnet to find her post and reply to her thread?

ChattyGeePeaTea · 29/08/2025 13:50

Why are the pair of you communicating by posting threads on Mumsnet about each other?

Because it’s obviously the easiest way! Grow up the pair of you.

wuminty · 29/08/2025 13:50

Sis (the one who went out and took the key), why would you not trust your sister to leave key for you in the safe box if she was going out?

You sound like a nightmare.

I thought she wohkd probably spend all day in the apartment

how rude and unpleasant

never occurred to you to ASK and make plans with her, instead of letting her stranded there?

Grammarnut · 29/08/2025 13:51

Why can't you go out and have a pleasant day. Take money and passport and shut the door. Your relative's problem if you are burgled, not yours.

Eddielizzard · 29/08/2025 13:51

I would leave if I could. Someone who is quite happy to do that to you isn't someone I'd want in my life. Take care.

What a selfish thing to do. The key safe is perfectly safe to use. Why would you want to ruin your relationship with your sister?

Truetoself · 29/08/2025 13:51

Your family member has ridiculous logic! How were you supposed to go out and come back?

Poor.

If you genuinely thought she'd be in the apartment all day, you wouldn't have needed the key yourself. She'd have been there to let you in.

Utter dick move on your part.

legsekeven · 29/08/2025 13:53

Can we have a link to the luggage tag thread

Well Im going to join in

Im the holiday let owner and Im not going to give this pair a spare key, they're lunatics.

Im waiting for the cleaner to join this thread as Ive been messaging them all morning and they havent replied.

we do need the 😂 reaction back!

Owly11 · 29/08/2025 13:56

You should definitely go out and don’t discuss it with them. They can’t seriously expect you to stay in all day. Take your valuables and if needed you can book into a hotel later. You need to take back control.

JamieCannister · 29/08/2025 13:57

PoshDuckQuarkQuark · 29/08/2025 12:57

They no doubt made a mistake. It happens.

Just keep trying to phone them and keave messages asking them to return the key.

Does the apartment lock when you shut the door? If so just go out.

If it doesnt lock then just take anything of value out the room, or at least your stuff and go out. Message the other person to say what you've done.

If there was no doubt it was a mistake I doubt OP would have posted.

Ha ha, absolutely brilliant. 😂😃😂

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 29/08/2025 13:58

And do you think you'd enjoy being locked in a random holiday apartment for an entire day @Thefastandthecurious5 , on zero notice?

Good god.

OP - pack up and come home / find somewhere else to stay. This isn't going to get better.

They’ve said it was “safer” for them to take the keys so they would have the option to return to the apartment. Whereas as I obviously don’t have that option…

Wait, so when you had the conversation about them taking the keys for safety (dumbest thing I've heard all day, btw), you must have said "How will I get in and out when you're on your day trip?"

What was their response? Did they assume you'd be out all day too?

Bizarre behavior.

As for the rest of the trip...is it a managed property or an Air BnB with just one key left? If it's managed and you want to be diplomatic, go and ask for a second key and put today behind you.

Personally I'd be letting them know that I didn't appreciate being stuck in all day, and the key would be around my neck for the rest of the trip.

I'd also be out at the crack of dawn tomorrow and not back until bedtime 😅

If there is only one key then you do not take it on a day trip. You leave it with the person staying closest to the apartment. Absolute dick move.

If there is a key safe then use it. If the owners don’t want that it be used then they need to provide two keys.

You had two good choices; key safe or leave the key. You picked the idiotic and most dickish choice of taking it and trapping her in the apartment. You owe her the cost of one day if the holiday that she has now missed out on.

Soonenough · 29/08/2025 14:02

The sister who has gone out with the key is a nasty bitch . Nothing else to say . No hope for a relationship with a selfish , self absorbed person and vicious streak too. You tried . She failed.

TokyoSushi · 29/08/2025 14:02

I knew it would be you two!! If this thread isn't a wind up

ChattyGeePeaTea · 29/08/2025 14:03

@Thefastandthecurious5 you owe your sister an apology. Even if you took the key with the best of intentions, it's limited her options for the day and if you really thought she'd be in all day it made more sense for her to have the key as she could let you in later.

@User8182737484849 you need to be less of a wet blanket. Of course you can leave the apartment - it's self-locking.

As to how to enjoy the rest of the trip - both of you need to speak to each other rather than trying to crowdsource support online like a pair of squabbling children.

soupyspoon · 29/08/2025 14:04

Ive already told you all I am not going to provide a second key. The two of them are a nightmare, they'll have to just communicate and get on.

My cleaner has another key and she hasnt got back to me. I had a whole bottle of brand new windolene in the cupboard, the windows are filthy and most of the bottle has been used. What has she done with it all?

Shes been back at her house cleaning her own windows, thats what.

You are a piece of work. You were going to be out all day but you thought it made sense for you to have the key? Yeah right, pull the other one. Of course op should have had the key if you were out all day.

Mercurysinretrograde · 29/08/2025 14:05

OP take your stuff and go to a hotel. You shouldn’t be holidaying with someone who is so disrespectful of you, or so self obsessed that she didn’t even think of you.

PiggingBastardPigs · 29/08/2025 14:05

User8182737484849 · 29/08/2025 13:11

There is a key safe that they have refused to use so it’s not an accident. It’s very much their way or the highway.

the door is self locking so I would have to wedge something in between it to be able to leave. They are on a day trip and have refused to come back early to let me out! I told them about the key safe repeatedly and they won’t use it.

Did they answer their phone then? Since your first post?
