To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

I'm confused

The only way she owns one property is if she is handing the old one entirely to her ex-husband

Otherwise, she owns two?

Tryingtokeepgoing · 29/08/2025 22:11

I am saying she has not paid the right amount of council tax. I haven’t mentioned stamp duty, which is what I believe the newspaper articles are referring to. I’m not sure what the Tories have to do with it. If you disagree with my assessment of council tax due per the rules that’s fine; but it’d be helpful if you could explain why

The council tax on her grace-and-favour” apartment in Admiralty House?

That's the angle the Tories are going for, so maybe we will find out at some point

Plantatreetoday · 29/08/2025 22:23

As an aside
Given her and her dh split up a long time ago is there anything to read into the fact she has just now decided to buy a property

Given Reeves autumn budget will almost certainly affect home owners or future home owners ?

Probably that she’s got the money from her ex buying her out?

HRTQueen · 29/08/2025 22:30

It’s the hypocrisy

Angela Raynor on a number of occasions has very openly spoken about how wrong it is that the wealthier in society are able to avoid paying tax with legal loopholes

this is what she has done

it’s not against the law but someone who proudly states she is a socialist and wants to make changes to stop such legal loopholes benefiting the already more comfortable off in our society really shouldn’t not be taking advantage of them

it’s not really in the spirit of being a socialist or of the left of the party

Yes wanting others to pay but not her

Serpentstooth · 29/08/2025 22:37

Oh dear, I've been trying to get hold of Tory ex Chancellor Zahawi to discuss the many homes he owns but he was busy warming up his horses now the heating in the stables has to come out if his own pocket, intead of the taxpayers, it gets a bit chilly in there. So no joy there. Have to stick with bashing Rayner then. Hey, Ange, do them all a favour and do something illegal. The collective right wing orgasmn will power the National Grid for a good 3 months.

Theolittle · 29/08/2025 22:50

there is no allegation of wrongdoing from the right wing press because she hasn’t done anything wrong. They’re just stirring things up and everyone falls for it

Tryingtokeepgoing · 29/08/2025 23:19

If you really want to get the apologists on the left frothing, it’s probably best not to mention that her share of the house she once owned with her ex husband has apparently been transferred into trust for her children, not to her ex husband at all. And as we all know, trusts are A Bad Thing. And only used to avoid IHT. Good job there are no rumours of that increasing. It’s be very bad optics to shovel assets out of the reach of a tax that’s about to increase ;)

However, I have only seen that referenced in the telegraph online, which is up there with the guardian for biased reporting ;)

So is that a no? You can’t point me to any policy commitments that demonstrate he’s on the side of the people (which was your initial claim).

What I said was his views are well known. You know what they are. You don't me to tell you.

I explained why I think you don't like his views eg you aren't bothered by crime, immigration, government wasting money, out of control benefits etc.

It's quite easy for you to find his policies. They have been on the front page of various newspapers in recent days.

Based on your question either you have been living on the moon or you don't like his policies.

BIossomtoes · 29/08/2025 21:05

That’s an excellent article and so clear.

Shame people either have problems with comprehension or will choose to ignore it because it doesn’t suit their preferred narrative.

Why let the truth get in the way?

itsgettingweird · 30/08/2025 07:07

I’m surprised there still a conversation about why she pays council tax if she doesn’t own.

What do you think happens for the millions of people who rent?

I don’t own my primary residence - I pay the council tax!

Oldwmn · 30/08/2025 13:00

Ozgirl76 · 29/08/2025 09:35

She’s a bloody idiot - even if this was “legal”, to do something so questionable in her position is so dumb. She is the modern Prescott in so many ways.

Yep. Just because you're allowed to do something doesn't mean you should.
I have often wondered, over the years, why politicians do these things. They must know what the optics will be. I think the answer is that they are, as a group, exactly like everybody else. Once someone's had a sniff of the extra tenner, of we go! Grab grab grab - but we get furious if someone else does it.
It's always been the same - not just these days these politicians. It could be addressed: I would put an end to the free ticket, clothes etc type things, expenses should be cut to the bone & MPs would get a substantial pay rise (we are asking a lot from them after all) & this would be their sole job for the duration (a few exceptions allowed for professions - doctors & pilots are two I can think of). No swanning off for reality shows or holidays etc etc during work time.
Ah well, that was a nice fantasy 🙂

BIossomtoes · 30/08/2025 13:22

Politicians shouldn’t do something as normal as buying their one and only home perfectly legally and paying every penny of tax due? I doubt there would be anyone in parliament if that was the case.

His soundbites are well known.
I’ve seen enough clips of Reform supporters being extremely surprised at their actual policies, because they depend too much on soundbites & headlines, and not enough attention to the detail.

You seem to think the facts come from the front of newspapers, and people who don’t like him like crime. It’s an interesting perspective, I’ll give you that.

UltraHorse · 30/08/2025 16:31

Angela got where she is on the basis of being working class didn't she Has she actually done anything to help any working class like apparently she worked in care Nothing has been done to make that a more attractive job and shouldn't people on such huge wages have to sign in and out of work to prove they are working she's obviously enjoying a luxurious life Change right to buy back to how it was people on low wages dream of owning one home

Yes exactly

surely they should be setting a good example

they’re busy trying to obtain more money out of property owners whilst doing this

luckylavender · 30/08/2025 18:02

@Blankscreen- go where? She’s elected by the members. Starmer can’t get rid of her.

Flakey99 · 30/08/2025 18:06

OP, maybe you should start investigating where the Tory donors get their billions from?? Or are you one of them?

luckylavender · 30/08/2025 18:07

PigeonPants · 29/08/2025 11:04

I'm not a fan of Rayner (I think it's mainly the internalised misogyny that gets me), but whether or not Starmer will back her depends on whether she's broken the letter of the law and/or Labour policy or not.

Anyway, Blair is back so it's going to be a whole new Labour soon.

And your post is still somehow unreasonable.

But Starmer can’t do anything. She was elected Deputy Leader by the membership. An understanding of the rules when posting is always useful

billysboy · 30/08/2025 18:11

Plenty of houses for everyone as Angela will be building 1.5m before the end of this parliament
can’t see what the fuss is all about

He could withdraw the whip if she is accused of misconduct or he thinks she’s brought the party into disrepute I believe? Though I think generally it has to be an accusation of quite serious misconduct and this probably doesn’t meet the threshold for that.

luckylavender · 30/08/2025 18:39

I don’t think Starmer would risk splitting the Party by doing that.
