Getting pregnant at 38?

babyfeever · 28/08/2025 21:52

I had my first child at 35, I suffered from gestational diabetes, has a postpartum haemorrhage and then developed a womb infection.

Thankfully DC was fine.

DC will be 2 in a few months and I would like to have more children.

I have also recently been diagnosed with endometriosis.

Obviously I am concerned about going through the same thing again and leaving DC without a mom.

But I have always wanted a big family and I love being a mom.

Has anyone got pregnant in their late 30s and early 40s without any issues?

I had my last at 39.
No issues with conception, pregnancy or birth

Hankunamatata · 28/08/2025 21:55

You need to talk to medical professional. Im guessing your a higher risk of GD again. No idea what lilhood of hemorrhaging again would be

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/08/2025 21:57

Yes it's absolutely possible and pretty common to have a healthy pregnancy in your late 30s. I had my DD at 39, no issues. I don't want to minimise your concerns but sometimes people talk about people having pregnancies later in life as if it was freakishly rare. It's really not.

LoztWorld · 28/08/2025 21:57

Your age is not an issue but you need to talk to a doctor about the specific complications you had last time.

This.

You're focusing on the wrong thing, op.

Just turned 39 and 15 weeks pregnant! 12 year age gap from the last and pre eclampsia last time so officially classed as high risk but so far so good. Lots of extra monitoring but suspect that’s due to the preeclampsia rather than age!

Andthatrightsoon · 28/08/2025 22:34

Had my first at 39. It went so well I had more at 40, 43 and 46! Good luck, OP 😀

MeinKraft · 28/08/2025 22:36

Everyone here will rush to tell you that 38 is young to have a baby, but realistically you’re unlikely to have a large family given your age and the health complications you have. I don’t see why you wouldn’t try for another though, the risks can be managed better now that you know what you’re dealing with.

Athreedoorwardrobe · 28/08/2025 22:40

I had a baby at 38. A suprise 3rd!!
It was my first birth in my 20s that had the biggest physical impact on me.. I couldn't even walk down the road for months.
The one at 38 went much better than that!! Altho my blood pressure did get high during the labour so I had to be induced. No problems after though.

Hi
I was quite overweight when I got pregnant with a BMI of 27.

I have managed to lose 4 stone and now have a BMI of 20 so hopefully if I was to get pregnant again my chance of getting GD would be low hopefully.

Yes I always hear women the age of over 35 being classed as a “generic pregnancy”.

It is reassuring to read from PP who got pregnant in their late 30s and early 40s with no issues Smile.

@Andthatrightsoonwow that’s amazing Smile.

I have a telephone consultation booked for Monday with the GP and will see what they suggest/ recommend.

Was fine at 39 with DC2 with less complications in the birth as well. A couple of friends are just having/had baby at 40 - don't think it is so uncommon and hope GP can help

Merryoldgoat · 29/08/2025 00:14

Yes, pregnant first try at 34 & 39

Complicated pregnancies though (PIH/PE, SPD) and both boys have ASD.

Merryoldgoat · 29/08/2025 00:15

Oh and I was obese both times. With PCOS. Fully expected not to get pregnant so was a bit shocked.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 29/08/2025 00:31

The age shouldn’t be too big of an issue just now but speaking to a doctor is a good idea. I’d also request a birth debrief to go over what happened last time, I found this really useful after a horrible labour when pregnant with my next baby.

DrPrunesqualer · 29/08/2025 00:51

Had my first at age 34 then Got pregnant with twins at age 38

Normal pregnancies, didn’t even get low on iron and I’m a veggie and no stretch marks which was Wierd for twins

Did you actually mean to ask that? Were you considering every woman over 35 experience issues during pregnancy?
It is blatantly obvious that is not the case.

This your first time using a discussion forum? It’s obviously not meant literally, she’s looking for people which experience to offer their story or guidance. Standard way of asking a question on here.

Precisely, and this is the AIBU section of the forum. This woman should have not dumped this thread here. Let's try to use the forum the right way.

Don’t be so silly.

I had one at 36 and one at 39. No problems either time and I got pregnant v quickly each time (2-3 cycles). I did have 2 MCs in between 1 and 2 though, which was obviously very upsetting. Both were early and not an issue medically. I don't know if my age contributed to the MCs but I assume it's likely that it did. Good luck OP.

ChihuahuaKeeper · 21/09/2025 09:38

I has my first baby at 38 (second cycle), my second baby at 41 (first cycle)
I'm a vegetarian and my first weighed 8lbs,9oz, gained 1 and 1/2 POUNDS first week born. Second was induction at 38 weeks and he weighed the same, gained the same weight. Great pregnancies, tricky deliveries. Is that age related though?

RusticChips · 21/09/2025 09:50

I was 42 when I had 3rd surprise baby 10 years after 2nd - I actually felt fine with the third one much better than I did with the first two. I wasn’t over weight when I conceived but I did have GD during the pregnancy but this was fine, well monitored and controlled with diet, I hardly put on any weight during pregnancy and it went straight after birth. Daughter is now 15 yrs old.

I had both my babies at 35 and 38 and the words “geriatric” or “of advanced maternal age” were not mentioned to me once. It didn’t factor into my care at all. Fell pregnant quite quickly and relativelu easy, straightforward pregnancies.

I had my DC at 37 and just turned 39, no problems at all in either pregnancy other than some back pain, cankles and mild carpal tunnel towards the end.
