Would you move back home if you could be mortgage free?

Live abroad, we were able to buy a house years ago at a great price in a wealthy area.
We have £100 K owing on the mortgage (we’re mid 40’s)
Recently had it valued and we’d be able to sell with a profit of enough to buy a house outright back home in the uk (nothing fancy but enough for us-two adults, one Dc and Ddog) so we’d have no mortgage, car already bought, with just bills, food, petrol to pay for each month.
We wouldn’t be able to sell and get anything better where we are as it’s all very expensive.

There are many other positives for wanting to return to the uk, but being able to be mortgage free is surely a no brainer?
Dh doesn’t agree

Depends on so many other things…..jobs, school, weather, any other family needs e.g. aging parents you want to be closer to…..

whirlyhead · 27/08/2025 14:37

I could do the same but no way in hell am I moving back to the UK. Fortunately my partner feels the same!!

Octavia64 · 27/08/2025 14:38

No.

there’s a lot of other factors. It’s not a no brainer.

mindutopia · 27/08/2025 14:41

I would live where I loved living.

We are mid 40s, live in the UK, and have a mortgage of probably £400k left (on our £800k+ house). We live in a beautiful part of the country that affords us a lovely lifestyle and we love our house and community.

I would not sell up by choice just to be mortgage free. If we were 70s and struggling, maybe. But I hope to have another 30+ years enjoying my life here.

Really? Where are you and where would you be going back to?

You haven't given anywhere near enough information for anyone else to have an opinion on this.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/08/2025 14:55

I wouldn’t. I’d be moving out of the UK if I could..

KarmenPQZ · 27/08/2025 15:14

If you can afford your mortgage then what does it matter really? If it’s affordable then it’s a psychological burden not a financial one.

say you become mortgage free and then the spend the rest that you would have out in the house does that make you happier?

Tracklement · 27/08/2025 15:29

Entirely area dependent

Where I live…. Hell yes I’d return in a blink. Then again I’d never leave. Beautiful town in south east, surrounded by green but only 45 min train to London. Love love LOVE it

indoorplantqueen · 27/08/2025 15:33

We did at the end of Covid. Sold our house for 500k, bought one similar size in my home town, though with the bonus of a huge garden, driveway, garage etc for 290k. Became mortgage free at 37 (dh a bit older) and were able to whack 50k each in our pensions with what was left over.
we have a fab lifestyle. Several holidays a year, not worrying about money. We did also open LISA’s and pay in the max every year. We could also afford to increase our pension payments.
we were lucky that we both good jobs at the same level.

ShodAndShadySenators · 27/08/2025 15:37

I don't know... we are mortgage free and have been for years. We do like the little town we live in but I do feel the pull of living somewhere that's warm all year round, as I hate the cold/winter. But aside from that, I think you would have to be moving to a really nice bit of the UK and have enough income for private medical cover as well as covering all the bills. I'm not sure why anyone would want to move back to the UK from abroad otherwise? Just not having a mortgage is not enough of a draw to make it a "no brainer".

MrsArcher23 · 27/08/2025 15:40

If your DH is against the idea, it’s not a ‘no-brainer’. Why do you want to come back apart from to be mortgage free?

Icanttakethisanymore · 27/08/2025 15:42

Surely the key question is whether you actually want to move back? Being mortgage free is not a good trade if you'd rather stay where you are.

To be with parents and family, nice little uk school for Dd by the sea, community feel, health care for Dd, just back to England and home

I don’t think I could live with my mum. She’s a handful. Living with my Mother in law is like death row sentance.
I have no advice but the thought is giving me chills.

InMyShowgirlEra · 27/08/2025 17:13

It depends where you live now but I suspect you might be romanticising a bit.

Mortgage free is nice but there's still council tax, bills, maintenance costs and so on.

Cornwall used to be full of close knit little communities but a lot of places impoverished and mostly empty because local people can't afford to live there and the property has been bought up as AirBnBs or second homes for Londoners. Ghost towns in the winter and then packed with tourists in summer.

I lived in Spain for many years and the quality of life was a million times better. Long days of sunshine from March- October, mild winters, fresh fruit and vegetables that actually tasted of something, options to eat out healthily for reasonable prices, a culture of being outside. I had to come back for practical reasons but if I could I'd go back in a heartbeat.

You need to weigh it all up - is it just about money or are you considering moving back anyway? How does the rest of your quality of life compare?

I’m not in the UK at the moment either and wonder the same, as I do miss parts of it, but for now I’m better off financially where I am and the weather is better (but there are reasons why I also consider moving back - family etc)

Cornwall

Then no I probably wouldn’t return because I have zero desire to be in Cornwall and that far away from London

the key is where do you currently live that doesn’t offer what you’re looking for the UK to provide?

He wants to stay where we are, his parents have sadly passed and he says mine won’t be around forever and we can’t live life for others. He doesn’t want to be back in the uk
