What made you lose weight?

Please no discussions about weight loss drugs. I don’t want that and don’t wish to open this thread for discussions on my reasons why. I want to know what made people want to lose weight? I just don’t feel motivated to. I don’t have loads to lose. I want to lose 2 stones to be in healthy weight range. Could definitely do with more but just want to focus on getting healthy

One of the ways I've lost is calorie checking everything

I regularly make pizza with pre made bases and knew the calories in that. Discovered that the switch one that comes if it's not in stock - tastes exactly the same - is 200 calories different.

The two 50/50 breads we eat - shit loads of difference

Even some tinned chopped tomatoes have vastly different calories

Well done on such an impressive weight loss! Do you mind me asking how you’ve done it? Your situation sounds very similar to mine.

Thank you!
As this thread was about the motivation to lose weight as opposed to the method, I didn’t want to originally mention how, but it was WLI.
It still required the motivation and the timing and all those other things, and it was bloody hard work. But yes probably easier than without.

Accidentally losing the first stone as a side effect of cleaning up my diet, upping my excercise and generally prioritising my health. My intention wasn't to lose weight (I'd accepted that a couple of extra stone at 50 was 'to be expected') and was fine with my appearance, but when the weight started falling I thought, wow, I look and feel so much better. It was like every few pounds took a few years off in how I looked and what I was capable of, stamina, speed, flexibility. I kept going and dropped another stone and have kept my BMI at 21 for 5 years now. Its ironic, but I needed to experience life less heavy to truly understand its benefits.

tealsea · 02/09/2025 11:37

I decided I needed to do something in May when I was struggling to find a dress that fitted for a Ladies lunch- been to the same one in May 24, promised myself then I'd lose weight by this year's, but was in fact even heavier. I'm about to turn 50 and didn't want to feel chubby for birthday celebrations etc. I'd gained a couple of stones over the past few years with perimenopause kicking in.

I was 83kg BMI 27.3, now down to just under 70kg BMI 23 and have another 5kg to get to my original target but actually feeling ok at this weight now and enjoying getting into the clothes at the back of my wardrobe again!
I used Noom this time but any food tracker would have probably been fine, no snacks in between meals, and aimed for 3 5k runs / 3 dumbell weight sessions at home a week.

For me it just needs a mental switch more than anything. Once I get out of the habit of snacking I don't actually feel hungry in between meals and that makes it a lot easier!!

Honestly, for me it wasn’t one big dramatic reason—it was small daily things adding up. Feeling out of breath going up the stairs, clothes not fitting right, and just wanting to feel more confident pushed me to finally make changes. I kept my focus on health first instead of the number on the scale, and that shift really helped my motivation.

I didn’t feel like me.

Its ironic, but I needed to experience life less heavy to truly understand its benefits.

Yes, this is so true! Ironically im glad i had a lot to lose, otherwise the 'transformation' wouldn't have had so much impact. Feeling the difference between 90kg that I was and 67kg that I am is brilliant.

ThatCyanViper · 04/09/2025 05:12

For many, it wasn’t a single “lightbulb moment,” but a slow realization that life would simply be better and easier with a healthier body.

Bikergran · 04/09/2025 05:27

At various times in my life: peer pressure, upcoming wedding, health concerns, holiday photos, divorce, partner's serious illness. It's never been easy, I've never enjoyed it, and I haven't successfully kept it off, though I am nowhere near as big as I was at my heaviest. Unfortunately my genes dictate that although I would probably be a survivor in a siege situation, I'll never be a catwalk model. I can accept my appearance, but I know I'm putting a strain on my health.

the3robbers · 04/09/2025 05:45

I just got to a point where I was so unhappy in how I felt and looked and then saw some awful photos of myself and thought enough is enough.

I now do 16:8 and have cut out chocolate and sweet things and I only have an occasional drink at the weekends. I’ve been losing weight for last few months slowly but surely and feel so much better in myself. One thing I have stopped doing is weighing myself, I used to find it so demoralising if I’d either gained or not lost much so I now just judge by how I look at my clothes. I know it wouldn’t work for everyone but it’s been a revelation for me.

FollowSpot · 04/09/2025 05:58

Health.

Catalyst: Covid.

Early in the first lockdown when the idea of catching it was truly frightening as the death toll was sky high, the risk factors for not surviving seemed to be age and weight. I thought “well I can’t do anything about age (62) but I can about weight”.

So I set about walking, and adjusting to a healthier diet . I didn’t go ‘on a diet’, I just focussed on seeing my body as deserving to be nurtured and treated well. Stopped snacking. Upped veg intake, stuck to modest portion size, especially of carbs and anything fried.

Lost 3 stone by Christmas 21 and felt so much fitter, healthier, livelier, more optimistic.

Serpentstooth · 04/09/2025 06:18

I was weighed at a health check about 10 weeks ago. I weighed at least 2 stones more than I thought I did, although I knew I'd become pretty hefty, having lost ability to walk further than theq street corner and back. I was horrified, perhaps it was having it said out loud by a medic? Whatever it was that galvanised me, I'm now about 1.5 stones less, with another 2 to go. Eggs, meat and fish, green salads, no bread, rice, pasta, potatoes. Can't sacrifice csrbs entirely so a dish of strawberries and mango daily and a couple of oatcakes. It's got to go. Once a week, I'll have a 'proper' meal, protein, veg, cards and a pudding of some kind. It's working for me and I don't feel deprived at all.

TroysMammy · 04/09/2025 06:21

Having abnormal liver function blood tests then a scan which showed gallstones and a non alcoholic fatty liver. I lost just over 2 stone using Nutracheck and I've reversed my fatty liver.

InterestedDad37 · 04/09/2025 06:36

Having to buy bigger clothes, not being able to do the sport I do regularly as well as before, realising I was 2 stone heavier than than I was 3 years ago. Seeing photos of myself and thinking "who's that tubby person?"
I'd had a succession of injuries that stopped me from doing much exercise - I got lazy, and started snacking a lot.

Bread121bread · 04/09/2025 06:36

Which time? I have been on a diet every now and again. The main reason I put myself on a diet is almost always my health. Then comes vanity. Lastly, it is because I don't want to buy new outfits. I love wearing lots of different loose fabric and bright colours. Luckily, at work I wear uniform so I fit in during the shift.

My dsis used to call my sense of style homeless person look. My latest weight loss has brought few dresses back into circulation. This excits me. I'm very happy with it. Disclaimer, I do wear black, grey or brown to dc school events. Other times, true me comes out.

rugbychick1 · 04/09/2025 06:44

I need bilateral knee replacements. My very lovely, kind surgeon has said I need to get my BMI done before I can get the surgery. Weight loss commenced

Barnbrack · 04/09/2025 06:44

So I have PCOS and therefore weight has been a constant battle but when I gain weight it's not a case of why did you lose weight but how did you overcome what was stopping you controlling your weight. When I gain I gain a t an alarming ate, I'm medicated with Metformin which is a huge help as I can actylose weight on it where nothing other than lighter life meal replacement worked without it. Things that have led to gains, a broken shoulder that immobilised me for 3 months, an ankle I jury that immobilised me for 3 months, my mum's death, recurrent miscarriages and resultant medication, pregnancy I lost weight with both but breastfeeding hormones I gained and couldn't lose. Once I've gained I need time to process and plan for losing. So it's all about routine for me. I'm 2 stone down after almost a year of slimming world, as I say I lose very slowly, but I've another 2 stone to lose. I'll get there. Even a dripping tap eventually fills a bucket

Laf90 · 04/09/2025 07:09

Last august I somehow (likely in my sleep) damaged my sacro illiac joint and could barely walk. I spent a fortune with am osteopath who politely indicated my weight wouldn't be helping. I did nothing about it and the problem returned again in November- 4 days before my wedding. I didn't think I'd walk down the aisle, my husband had to near enough carry me to the toilet/ GP. I was on paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen, nefopam and codeine on my wedding day. My back was strapped up by my osteo under my wedding dress. I'd spent another small fortune seeing the osteo again. I've since lost just over 3 stone and aiming for another stone between now and christmas

narkyspirit · 04/09/2025 07:24

I need a medical for work one of the criteria is a BMI of. less than 35, which I have struggled with for the last 10 years, its the same doctor each time who always pulls out the previous medical to see the history. IN December I turn up and BMI is 37 so I've 'failed' Dr is ok but says I can only give 6 months instead of 2 years so you need to lose weight.

I'm 5ft 3, in December weighing in at 96kg BMI 37.2, now my weight is 77.8 BMI 30.1 medical redone in May with a BMI at 32.5 so 2 years fit to work.

I have a annual health check up at the Surgery which highlights Blood pressure and more recently high Cholesterol which has increased, refused Statins and mad a proper effort to get weight down.

I have been fasting 18/6 6 days a week, thrown the freezer away and eat fresh cooked meals each day, i've cut out the ready meals, meal deals etc and cut down on alcohol drastically.

People have noticed, not many have said too much as some are aware I have had some health issues.

motheroflittledragon · 04/09/2025 07:29

for me personally? dh went through a bit of a health scare where we did for a long time worry it was genetic. so we for a long time thought ivf would be the only option for baby 2. i knew that i was not at an ideal weight for ivf to be successful and as i was on the older end anyway i wanted to give us the best chances i could. turns out it was not genetic in the end and we will try for baby 2 once i lost the weight

Katemax82 · 04/09/2025 07:44

I've only really been fat when breastfeeding (4 kids, 2 of them extended breastfed, one still breastfeeding). Last time I stopped I lost a stone without noticing until people kept saying I'd lost weight

sashh · 04/09/2025 08:16

I've lost 3 stones since January.

I actually don't know how, my appetite just disappeared and when I do eat I can't manage much food.

I've had problems with my bowels and I was being sick, but that seems to have died down.

I'm still obese so the weight loss is fine with me.

Yes I am being tested for various things and have had a couple of colonoscopies.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/09/2025 08:27

everytime ive lost weight i reach the point of being so fed up of feeling uncomfortable getting ready to go out and buying clothes. That feeling crap is harder to bear than the diet and exercise changes.
