What made you lose weight?

Please no discussions about weight loss drugs. I don’t want that and don’t wish to open this thread for discussions on my reasons why. I want to know what made people want to lose weight? I just don’t feel motivated to. I don’t have loads to lose. I want to lose 2 stones to be in healthy weight range. Could definitely do with more but just want to focus on getting healthy

Not weight loss but regular exercise. I still loathe doing it but I hit 40 and the genuine fear of losing muscle mass and generally setting the trajectory for being a weaker or frailer older person in 40 years time shook me a bit.

So basically I was motivated by how my life will look in 30 years if I don't do the slog now compared to if i just accept that it's a chore like working and cleaning: a non-negotiable that I don't have a choice about doing, I just go when it's gym time.

lotsofpatience · 27/08/2025 11:00

You just need to realise that being fat equals being miserable. You only live once and you are wasting your life away by not having the determination to stick to a healthy diet. One day you will be in your deathbed thinking, "shit I fucked up. I could have had a wonderful life and yet I purposefully decided to punish my body by injecting tons of unhealthy garbage and now I am about to die as a consequence even though I could have stopped anytime" .
If you fully embrace this idea then at some point you will snap out of it.

incognitomummy · 27/08/2025 11:03

When I saw how awful my parents old age is. I decided I needed to take control before I hit 50. To get healthier and Stronger so I can still move and live a lovely life in my 60s 70s and 80s

LoserWinner · 27/08/2025 11:05

I had to go to A&E for something quite unrelated. The doctor asked me how long I had been diabetic. I wasn’t, just pre-diabetic, but it really rattled me. My ex and my Mum were both diabetic, so I knew how tough life would be if I didn’t do something about it. So basically, fear got me started, and fear kept me going.

BashfulClam · 27/08/2025 11:09

I lost 4 stone because my mother has type 2 diabetes and now dementia and I don’t want to end up the same. I am 5’9” and carry extra weight well so people are surprised when I say how much I weigh. It’s all been calorie deficit as to be honest things like slimming works and weight watchers never really worked for me. I was eating full bags of pasta as it’s ’free’ right. I don’t have an off switch for food so I have to be really careful.

Wexone · 27/08/2025 11:30

Went for a medical in work - was told i was border line obese, nearly fell on the floor, always been skinny never an issue with my weight before, slowly it had crept up. That was just before covid - i lost weight then, combination of working from home and everything else gave me more time to eat better and exercise. Then my wedding spurned me to keep it off, now a little bit crept on so working to get it off, though now have a long term chronic pain condition so i need to pace myself aswell as make sure i do the right exercise so doesn't cause pain or flare ups aswell as my medication bloats me. One thing i do is a very rarely wear leggings or trousers that have elasticated waist, always jeans or trousers so i can feel when they start getting too tight to ensure i dont go back the way i was - its hard work though

TheHappyBiscuitB · 27/08/2025 11:31

I just genuinely started to hate the way looked in every picture, in every mirror, in every reflection. I would hate the way the clothes fitted me.

YelloDaisy · 27/08/2025 11:32

Hitting 70 years -appetite is just smaller

Comedycook · 27/08/2025 11:36

I remember DH and I went out with a group of 6 couples...i was the fattest wife.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 27/08/2025 11:36

I've not been overweight by very much, but what motivates me to keep my weight down is the thought of reduced mobility and joint problems. Once you are unable to walk or do exercise the weight piles on and it's very much harder to lose.

civetcat · 27/08/2025 11:37

Hypertension - took my blood pressure and the diastolic was >100. I was terrified of getting a stroke and the disability with that. I lost >3 stone (doing 5:2) and found myself a lot more able bodied. I hadn't realised how much the weight gain had crept up and its effects on mobility.

SparklyBrickViper · 27/08/2025 11:40

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie its that head not seeing what others see. Still naturally gravitating towards bigger sizes when looking at things in shops etc.

PurpleSocks37 · 27/08/2025 11:41

I went from a comfortable life to surviving thanks to food banks. As I have a child I did prioritise her meals instead of mine , I was afraid of running out of food and not being able to buy or receive more from food banks.
( now we are in a better position and I buy all our own food)

If you want to lose weight try to do weightlifting, I'm doing it now and I'm not losing weight per se but my body is shrinking. You'll look slimmer! And weightlifting is good to prevent osteoporosis.

JustPassingThruHere · 27/08/2025 11:42

Before this year, I was in the gym 6 times a week maintaining being class 2 obese at 13 stone 2 lbs and 5 foot 2.

I didn't mind too much because I thought I was fueling muscle growth with my extra padding and I'd lost 5 stone to get here the year before.

Hurt my shoulder in martial arts and then my quad from jogging so couldn't exercise at all.

Decided to focus on weight loss since I couldnt go to the gym and doing nothing isn't ok to me, and am now 9 stone 10 lbs and in the healthy BMI range with 2 more weeks to go on plan.

Sadly for me, even though I felt strong at 13st, I look back at pictures and I was a chubby mama!!

Short answer: health

Lollzi86 · 27/08/2025 11:43

I saw a photo of myself someone had taken at an event and couldn’t hide the fact I was massive anymore! Prior to that I’d avoid photos or just do face photos. I’m talking so big I had 5st plus to lose. I’ve lost nearly 4 now and feel a lot better/look a lot better.

SaladAndChipsForTea · 27/08/2025 11:46

My parents were obese and lost weight after covid and honestly they are decades younger in themselves. Before it was bags of sweets on the sofa, wine at the weekend and moaning about being tired.

Now they go walking, biking, seek out active holidays, have joined local clubs, they dress nicer (goodbye stretchy, loose fitting drab black clothes) and are excited to go on full days out with the grandkids that they would never have done before.

Its been amazing to see their faces change from tired and unremarkable to genuinely lit up and glowy. I know part of that is diet but a lot of it is happiness shining out.

Dontcallmescarface · 27/08/2025 11:46

A massive heart attack at year ago today. I've made diet and lifestyle changes and have lost nearly 2 stone since.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 27/08/2025 11:47

According to the scales I’ve gone from 12st to 8 and a half but at 5”2 I still look chunky. I’d like to lose another stone to ensure BMI is lower.

Don't be ridiculous @SparklyBrickViper

CautiousLurker01 · 27/08/2025 11:50

I was approaching 56, the age my mother was when she died.

My kids have not quite left home (one to uni next month, the other next year) and I realised that the extra 6.5 stone would mean I would a) not be able to enjoy my new unencumbered freedom and b) would risk being a burden on them by the time I am 70-75 and they are juggling careers and children. I want to be fit enough to be able to help them, not burden them.

GreenGodiva · 27/08/2025 11:56

I have never had a problem losing weight, my problem has been keeping the weight off. I’d been very up and down over the years. I referred to the weight management team and once again lost 2 st only to regain it. They nominated me for weight loss surgery and gall bladder removal after I jumped through the hoops, did the education sessions etc. Two weeks ago today I had the surgery. Good job as I had a heavily infected gallbladder, worst the surgeon had seen, and a stone totally blocking the duct, and the entire thing was filled with puss and was ready to burst. Plus the infection had caused it to adhere to all sorts of stuff it should not have. That emergency removal saved my life, and the weight loss surgery is already working wonders. It’s better than mounjaro. Very little appetite, my blood sugars have stabilised and I’m already over 2 stone down. I did this as I have sleep apnea and need a knee replacement. I’ll attach a screen shot to show how much my weight fluctuated.

i was 17st 7 when i got weighed two weeks before surgery. Today im 15st 4. The graph is over the last 3-4 years. The biggest dip previous to this current one is last August when I was on mounjaro ( that’s what triggered the gall issues)

What made you lose weight?
LarrySherbert · 27/08/2025 12:14

My parents, both in their 70s, both diabetic, both have complications, neither can walk far. I realised that if I don't get into training for old age now it is going to be miserable. I've overhauled my whole lifestyle and lost 15lb in the last month. So health, that is my motivation, the desire to still be able to move myself around under my own power. The desire to not have to rely on someone else to lift things for me. The desire to not have to spend my last years in a cascade of ill health that only ever seems to get worse and unpleasant interventions that don't really seem to help very much.

Starling7 · 27/08/2025 12:22

I do a Joanna Lumley if I want to loose weight - only one meal at night, the rest of the day fruit. Lots of walking everywhere. Not particularly healthy way to do it, but I find my body gets used to waiting for a meal around 6pm and i can eat a normal meal then - not pie and chips, but it doesn't have to be super low calorie either. I've lost 3 stone that way several times. Started again a couple of months ago and have lost a stone already. I also cut out wheat because it makes me hungry all the time.

It isn’t particularly ridiculous. I’m 5’1” and am much more comfortable nearer to 8st than 8.5st, even though that’s in the healthy BMI range. I seem to carry all of that extra half stone on my boobs, which are already pretty generous, and I really struggle to find a bra that is comfortable, stops my back from aching and doesn’t cut into my shoulders. And doesn’t look like it’s made from pure scaffolding.

I used to weigh 12.5st in my pre-intermittent fasting, eating proper food (mainly!) and enjoying being active days.

MatildaTheCat · 27/08/2025 12:33

I was motivated by an event we’d been invited to at Buckingham Palace. It was Project Slenderising for the Queen ( she wasn’t actually even there!)

I lost 2 stone over about 9 months and have kept it off for nearly 20 years. The reality is that I prefer myself slim and able to wear what I want. I weigh myself daily to keep an eye on creeping upwards and genuinely don’t snack.

I also eat when I feel the need and am a bit baffled by people who religiously have 3 meals a day. Our only definite meal is dinner. Before that we do our own thing. This usually means I fast for a long period overnight without intending to.

hardhatready · 27/08/2025 12:52

I’ve just started using chat gpt as a fitness coach. 4lbs down in a week. Hoping it keeps me motivated. I’ve been trying to loose weight all year. And before that keep putting on and loosing the same half stone. Got 2-3 stones in total to loose. Fitness is a lot better but self motivated. I just can’t seem to crack the diet. Similar to another poster I’m 5ft 4 and was happy at 11 1/2 stone but kids, lock down, kid in hospital a couple just crept on and I haven’t been able to get on top of it again. So fingers crossed for my new coach being the thing 🤣
just want to ages well and feel a bit happier in my clothes
