To not want to give all my money to my parents?

WhatsmynameB · 30/05/2008 21:23

My parents lent me and dh lots of money (about £5000) when we had dd1 to buy all the essentials, this was 5 years ago, we used it all to buy stuff, now they want it back.
I have sold most of the stuff on ebay and made back about £3000, my parents only want this back not the whole amount. AIBU to think that it is my money, I did the ebay sales so I made the money, there would be no money if we hadn't sold the stuff.
They have plenty of money, they went on holiday twice last year, we are not short of money but we could afford a much better holiday with this money.

Er, it was a loan, was it not? Give them their money back.

BrownSuga · 30/05/2008 21:24

seems it was a loan, should be repaid

LyraSilvertongue · 30/05/2008 21:25

Am a bit at £5k to buy 'essentials' tbh. What on earth did you spend it on?

The word I noticed in your post is that they lent you the money hence they wanted it back and them not wanting all of it back is very reasonable imo.

YABU

You owe them the money, it wasn't a gift. I think they are being very nice only expecting the 3k back.

LyraSilvertongue · 30/05/2008 21:25

Or is this a wind-up? Never sure on MN...

QuintessentialShadows · 30/05/2008 21:26

There is a different way of looking at it.

The money you made from the Ebay Sales is yours. YOURS. You sold, you made money. Makes sense.

Just go find some other £5000 to give them instead.

LyraSilvertongue · 30/05/2008 21:26

Riven, really? Don't they know how tight money is for you?

WhatsmynameB · 30/05/2008 21:26

traditional silver cross pram and beautiful antique nursery furniture. It was ok because I knew I would be able to make a lot of it back on ebay.

roisin · 30/05/2008 21:32

I am shocked at the idea of anyone spending £5k on "essentials" for a baby. Let alone someone borrowing money to do so.

expatinscotland · 30/05/2008 21:34

tripp trapp
