I have a few. Can't say them out loud (except to DH).

MIL & FIL - multi millionaires. Spend loads of money on themselves, lavish holidays, sports cars, only the very best restaurants etc. Never ever do they give a penny to their adult children (and one is flat broke). This is despite them both having been given property and a thriving business by a parent themselves.

My Dad - Overbearing, alcoholic, violent outbursts etc, all through our childhood. He's now decrepit and I have to do so much for him. I resent it.

Brother - keeps saying he's broke, whilst living like a rockstar. Just spend £20k on a holiday, lives in a £600k house, drives top of the range car, but often claims poverty - stop lying!

And breathe......

Anyone else?

Loyalty points which expire if you don't use them within a given time limit 😡

People who get off an escalator and then stand there trying to figure out what direction to walk in. MOVE! There's a whole escalator of people coming up behind you, FFS.

At the airport - people that stand still on the moving walkways and create a bottle neck behind them. They make me so cross.

I saw a woman with her bare feet on the seat opposite her on the train yesterday yuck. She kept stretching her feet and legs out, had very dry skin. I was just thinking, take note of the carriage I'm on in case I get the same one back in the morning I wont sit there.

Oh very yuck. Why are people so disgusting!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/08/2025 12:07

People who are very loud and don’t let other people get a word in edgewise.

@pinknailvarnish1

Do we have the same MIL? 😄

When I told mine I’d been diagnosed with breast cancer, she gave me a long blank stare, then turned to my husband and said “Well obviously, her having cancer is better than having hay fever like me. I’ll never be cured of my problem”

I didn’t expect any sympathy, so I wasn’t surprised!

My mum is like this. When i injured my knee she made out that her broken nail was worse. If i ended up in icu she would be more bothered about her hayfever.

It’s their world, we just happen to live in it 😁

Also I know you're jealous of me because of my house and husbands wage. There i said it.

We were promised a large amount of money by a relative but have so far only received 20% of it. I’m pretty sure I know the reason why and I’m ok with it, it’s just because they were so clear on giving it to us, we’d factored it into our plans for when we remortgage.

Ironically, If they’d just let us know definitely that we’re not getting it then we’d be fine with that. However, at the moment, we’re in limbo thinking are we? Aren’t we? But we both feel too awkward and grabby to ask 😂

Oops, now I feel silly 😂

This made me think of another one -

My MIL gives money for Christmas, but she never says she is going to on the day itself (so then you have handed over all your presents but just kind of sitting there yourself with nothing) and then just transfers it on a random day afterwards.

It always seems to be just as you get to the stage of going "is she sending something this year? so then you feel like a grabby cow for questioning it, but also then the event is over and so it's barely a Christmas present anymore? And we don't get to say thank you in person when we see her on Christmas day, it ends up just by phone a month later.

Really winds me up, why be so weird about it?! Every single year! But of course, a different date every time.... 🙈 Once it was basically the end of Jan!

Years ago my grandmother left me a ruby ring in her will, but her daughter (my aunt) took it. I'm not big into jewellery - I'm happy with things from Accessorize etc - so I didn't make a fuss about it at the time, and it wouldn't have changed anything anyway. However, I'm sad that my aunt took something that she knew was for me because it taints her memory. I didn't see her often because we lived so far away from her, but I'd always understood she'd wanted a daughter instead of her sons and believed she loved me.
Years have passed. My aunt is long dead and the ring will have passed to the family of one of her sons. But I'd really like that ring now - not for me, but so I could give it to one of my daughters or granddaughters. I can't say that I'm pissed about it - just sad. But I also can't ask my cousin for it because he might feel bad if he knows what his mother did.

Chaotic bag packing at the supermarket by DH. I line the bags up and fill them in a thoroughly organised fashion to balance the weight, make sure all the frozen is together and ensure things don't get squashed. DH on the other hand is dangling a bag in mid air hurling the first thing he lays his hands on in the general direction of the bag, which ends up an odd triangular shape. It could have eggs at the bottom and a bag of potatoes at the top, he doesn't care. I sent him away today so I could do it myself

The 'flower girl' and 'bridesmaid' distinction has only come about in recent years in the UK and it's an imported thing from America.

In the UK, female attendants to the bride, regardless of age, have always been called bridesmaids, whether they're adults or kids. The term 'flower girl' didn't really exist in the UK until about 15 years ago!

I was a ‘flower girl’, aged 2, and my aunty’s wedding in Scotland 49 years ago.

Woman I sit next to at work with the fake nails, the sound of them tapping on the keyboard 😱

On the other side of me I have a woman who literally eats all day - 6 packets of crisps, share size M&Ms, 5 pack of doughnuts, 2 rounds of sandwiches, Haribo etc. She's slim so she can, but the constant eating is hard for me who due to a medical condition must not gain weight.

I want to work from home 😂

I should add that she literally brings a full carrier bag full of food she will eat for the day.

She's like the hungry caterpillar. Today she ate: 3 weetabix, crisps, 4 muffins, 2 rounds of sandwiches, a doughnut, a few biscuits, a twix, and another bag of crisps...I wear ear buds during her rustling etc.

KitTea3 · 28/08/2025 18:10

My MIL has a seriously infuriating habit of throwing others people stuff away....just cos she's in a bad mood 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️(most recently the lush bubble bar that had at least 4 more baths worth and annoying was bought because I could get multiple baths out of it)

It drives me insane and I wish I could say something without it causing issues.

It infuriates me that I am the only person in our house who can cut bread in a straight line. I do not want a wedge shaped slice of toast, thanks.

My younger brother never just left the house when a visit ended. He would get to the door then turn round and look at me, expecting a lengthy conversation. If feel too awkward to just say "bye then!" And slam the door in his face. I'm kind of glad we lost touch

I hate this too.

If visitors do it I simply usher them back into the living room saying "if we're going to carry on chatting let's do it in comfort".

They usually take the hint and bugger off.

Meh, to me polish will always be the correct word.

Apparently, nail polish is used in the US, but it's varnish in the UK, so either are acceptable, but when you consider the actual meanings of the words it's difficult to sympathise with your annoyance.

Polish: a substance used to give something a smooth and shiny surface when rubbed in.

Varnish: a liquid preparation that when applied to a surface dries to form a hard lustrous coating.

My brother was really weird though, he wouldn't chat he would just kind of stand there like he needed permission to go or something, I couldn't ever figure it out

I think that’s poor office etiquette . Eating at your desk is bad form but just about acceptable at lunch time Maybe she’s got a tape worm.

Seeing incorrect plurals everywhere, inc. on MN - family’s, baby’s, party’s, box’s, bus’s, Christmas’s.

For some reason autocorrect automatically changes most plurals to have an apostrophe before the S and highlights the word in red as misspelled if you don’t change it. It’s really frustrating but this has made people assume it’s the correct spelling. Especially those that already struggle to spell, don’t read a lot or are dyslexic. I wonder if it’s American spelling? 🤔
