Almost 7.

To walk around the block with (very) small placid dog. Takes less than 5 mins.

Small, quiet village.

I assure you my children were not terrified. They are now very secure, independent and street savvy tweens. It’s all fine, don’t you worry.

I’m glad you were lucky.

Daisymail · 24/08/2025 20:32

Not a chance, are you being serious?

Wrenjay · 24/08/2025 20:32

Not with a dog. Yes absolutely on their own or with friends in an area they are used to and are confident doing so. My niece at the age of 12 had never been to the local shop on her own and has never really grown up confident (now over 40).

6 year olds walk to and from school alone in Scotland? Not when I lived there

Sheldonsheher · 24/08/2025 20:35

They definitely do in Scotland, but not all, and obviously it depends on the route to home and the school. Depends if rural or city. Depends on the child. This child is nearly 7 not just turned 6. However probably a dog is too much of an unpredictable factor.

You do know that London is not the whole of the UK and most of us do not live in Brixton, right? There's a substantial number of people who live in small, safe villages where the neighbours mostly know each other, the kids look out for one another (and tell on each other if they're not being safe) and they're not afraid to let their kids out.

Yes. Lived from Cornwall to the south coast to the midlands to the NW of England since then. Wouldn’t send a 6 year old out by themselves in any of those places because that would have been an incredibly, stupidly, irresponsible thing to do. Obviously.

Typicalwave · 24/08/2025 20:36

No.

I would, as I also live in a tiny community but you know you're going to get flamed by the NO WAY HUN PEADO'S BEHIND EVERY TREE mumsnetters (who paradoxically think it's fine to give a kid the same age a smartphone)

Peaceandlabradors · 24/08/2025 20:43

No 11 to the park across one very very quiet side road in front of the doorbell to a park on the estate - yes. Nice place to live as well.

Sorrynotsorry2 · 24/08/2025 20:43

No ..

Pommes · 24/08/2025 20:44

No. Absolutely no way.

Lockdownsceptic · 24/08/2025 20:44

Go on! Let them go. Stand at the door and see how long it takes. They’ll be back with you in no time, unharmed. Children are not meant to be wrapped in cotton wool
all their lives. It’s very bad for them.

Stompythedinosaur · 24/08/2025 20:44

It depends on the area you live in. My dc played out at 6, but we are in a very rural and safe area. I would never have done that in a more built up area.

I wouldn't leave a 6yo alone with a dog no matter how placid.

Dita73 · 24/08/2025 20:44

Are you fucking high?!

GreenCa · 24/08/2025 20:45

Definitely not. Would not allow 6 year old to walk round block by themselves, never mind being in charge of a dog.My grandchildren (age 7 and 9) like to hold our small, well behaved dogs lead, but are only allowed under supervision as the dog can suddenly pull, nearly causing them to fall over and they have also let go of the lead. I would also be concerned about meeting other, possibly unfriendly, dogs whilst out with the dog. i would not want to put a young child in that position.

butterfly0404 · 24/08/2025 20:45

Not in a million years

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 24/08/2025 20:45

No...

amillionandone · 24/08/2025 20:46

No, I think that's at least a couple years too young. I just wouldn't feel it was worth the risk.

icallshade · 24/08/2025 20:47

No, I wouldn't let my children do that.

However I used to play outside all day with friends from age 4 as a child.
Crazy how times have changed.

GanninHyem · 24/08/2025 20:48

Are you crazy? It would be one thing a child doing that alone, but throw a dog into the mix, it's a recipe for disaster.
