AIBU to keep my son off school tomorrow?

BigCheese24 · 24/08/2025 18:53

Tomorrow is an English bank holiday. We live in Scotland. My DH and myself both work for an English bank so we’ve got the day off tomorrow. Because it’s not a Scottish bank holiday, school is on.

Weather looks to be fantastic tomorrow - should I give my son a cheeky day off & we go out and have some fun?

YABU - It’s a school day, send him to school.

YANBU - it’s a one off, have a family day out!

P.s. we don’t get fined in Scotland like they do in England (if that makes a difference? As I wouldn’t lie to the school I would tell the truth about why I was keeping him off.)

I think the message would be that family is most important of all?

Yes, pissing about with family instead of going to school just because the weather's nice, is definitely most important of all.

He'll be able to tell them that down the benefits office when he's an adult 👍

CurlewKate · 24/08/2025 20:11

I would. But I used to give my kids the occasional day off-I once drove straight past school and we went for an impromptu day on the beach.

PeloMom · 24/08/2025 20:13

Nag I’d enjoy my day with my DH or just enjoying myself. Plenty of days in the year for family time

TheHazelCritic · 24/08/2025 20:15

Do it! Winter is coming, make the most of a nice weather day!

Bloody hell calm down, it’s only a day off!

Life is short.

keep him off, but make sure you have a good day. Whatever that looks like for your family!

one day off school isn't going to do him any harm & all the better you can be honest with the school (sanity prevails).

But if it is a state school, this is wasting public resources.

noctilucentcloud · 24/08/2025 20:29

I don't know why you're asking as it sounds like you've already made your mind up

Some of the replies are giving me such a laugh thanks guys haha

to answer some Q’s

He’s in Primary 4
he’s been back 2 weeks, this is week 3
and myself and my husband are just back from a weekend away (fri>sun) so that’s why we were looking to spend time with DS as we hadn’t over the weekend

Your child's only been back at school a few weeks. You've made up your own mind so I don't know why you are asking AIBU but yes you are.

Plenty of good reasons for keeping children off school: illness; medical appointments; major family events that have been stupidly scheduled for term time; they're taking part in a sports competition; it's Sports Day and they try their best in every PE lesson but are stressed at the thought of the embarrassment of being rubbish in front of an audience; it's almost the end of term, you know they're not doing any more work at school and you have saved a fortune by booking your holiday just before the school holidays start (I'm sure there are more decent reasons but those were the ones that sprung to mind).

Wanting to spend a day with your child because you have chosen to spend 3 days away from your child and will have a weekend with them very soon anyway is one of the crappest reasons that I've ever heard.

Is it really, to you?
You had a weekend away without your child, so to show him family is so important you’re taking him out of school to spend time with him?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 seriously mate? He's in p4 ffs!

I would keep him off aye

nocoolnamesleft · 24/08/2025 20:45

So you dumped your kid on someone else all weekend, so want him to bunk off school so you can spend time with him? And you think that will tell him family is most important? Doesn't it tell him, adult time away from him is most important, followed by family time, and that school doesn't matter at all?

KarmenPQZ · 24/08/2025 20:49

Do you need moral support to spend time with your hubby? If not then son obvs goes to school as required and you guys have a great day off

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 24/08/2025 20:58

Meh. I know it's just one day but these things add up, I guess. One day out of a step by step maths curriculum - might be OK if he's a whizz, or it might be the difference between him staying afloat for the rest of the module.

One day out of an English planning cycle... I reckon it could be nearing the day they plan their own piece of writing based on the book; so he'll be doing that when the others are starting to write their work and he'll probably lose the publishing day, so missing the chance to hone his handwriting, missing that pride in his work.

Plus the message it sends to an impressionable mind - school doesn't really matter.

Iocainepowder · 24/08/2025 21:01

God i’d be leaping at the chance to just have a child free day with DH.

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 24/08/2025 21:02

To those saying it's only one day off.

Are you really that oblivious to the fact it's the OP's indifference to school, if you can find something more fun to do that's the problem?

It's the wrong attitude to instill in a child.

Zanatdy · 24/08/2025 21:02

No, not when school has just started back.

Marmite27 · 24/08/2025 21:03

Sounds like my boss Grin send him in and have a day date!

CallieOMally · 24/08/2025 21:03

I don’t think you’re unreasonable but I cannot imagine why you would want to 😂

RaginaPhalange · 24/08/2025 21:09

Life's too short, It's only a day, I've taken my dc out of school numerous times before we also live in Scotland.

I'm taking them out for 4 days to go on holiday then back a week then off the October week.

TheLemonLemur · 24/08/2025 21:21

I am a teacher in Scotland and would say this is the first week for many starting 'properly' getting into the curriculum after transitions and initial assessments. Many primary teachers will be starting issuing homework, spelling words, reading books etc tomorrow. Yes its only 1 day but they are just back and the teacher will have to find time to go over what he has missed

BigCheese24 · 24/08/2025 21:41

Well, the packed lunch is made & the uniform is ironed. He’s going to school. We couldn’t think of anything “fun” enough to justify keeping him off.

honestly this thread has genuinely been class Sunday night entertainment though. I love Mumsnet haha

Have a lovely day off together. It’ll be fine.

I find it amazing that’s Scotland kids have been back 2 weeks already! We’re off on our summer holiday tomorrow. 😂 Kids miss most of August, it’s normally the hottest month!

Honestly I agree. Does anyone actually know why England and Scotland have such drastically different summer holidays?
