Isn’t it nice to dry washing outside now it’s warm? How do you dry washing when it gets cold? Tumbke drier and clothes horse?

I’ve got a heated airer and a regular airer that I use. Don’t have a tumble dryer anymore

WickedElpheba · 24/08/2025 14:27

I enjoy being able to dry my washing outdoors. We don't have a tumble dryer but do have a heated airer. It can't do any sort of volume so I either do small items only or a few adult clothing items.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/08/2025 14:32

I still put it out when it's cold, if it's dry and ideally a bit of a breeze. It doesn't get fully dry but enough to get that outdoor-dried smell. Then I bring it in to finish off on the clothes airer.

Never had a tumble drier.

Sidebeforeself · 24/08/2025 14:33

Oh Im dreading not being able to dry outdoors! No room for tumble dryers and heated aircrews so winter laundry means two normal airers and me constantly worrying about mould and damp!

Me too. Makes a big difference

Thissickbeat · 24/08/2025 14:36

I dry outdoors pretty much all year round.
If the path is dry the washing will almost dry off in winter. I just pop it up on the airer to finish off.
Use the tumble dry a handful of times a year, usually in a rainy January.

indoorplantqueen · 24/08/2025 16:07

I put it out of its a dry day, even in winter, and especially if it’s a bit windy and sunny. I always finish it off in the tumble dryer though as it saves ironing and makes the clothes softer.

This is what I do. I peg washing out all through the year, as long as it's not raining.

I do smaller loads in the winter - basically the amount that fits on an airer. So it often still goes on an airer overnight after being out in the day, but I feel happier it's seen the outside.

Get a dehumidifier, it takes all the water from the washing so your walls don't get damp.

Mumof1andacat · 24/08/2025 16:20

We have a small tumble dryer for the towels, sheets and jeans. Every thing else is on a clothes horse/airer. We use dehumidifier to dry the washing on the airer as it helps with condensation.

StanfreyPock · 24/08/2025 16:20

Pulley in the kitchen plus dehumidifier works a treat, lucky to have high ceilings so out of the way.

I have one already but I still worry! We had a terrible issue once so I worry it will come back.

Sgtmajormummy · 24/08/2025 16:36

Pulley airer is a great thing if you have space for it. Up off the floor where the warm air rises. I use the maximum spin for everything then just winch it out of the way and forget about it until the next load is washed. Can’t stand tripping over metal clothes horses!
Mine is in the storeroom, DSis had hers over the stairwell (genius). I’ve also had one in the garage above the tumble dryer for the warmth.

NoEffingWay · 24/08/2025 16:53

I have an airer as I got rid of the tumble drier a few years ago, but have a little celebration every year when it gets dry enough to hang it outside!

tealandteal · 24/08/2025 16:55

I have two airers and I can fit a full load on an airer. I put them outside in the summer and in the winter if it’s not raining then bring them in next to the radiator. There is space for a tumble drier in our new house but haven’t felt the need to get one yet. Duvet covers and sheets go over the bannisters.

Aldilidl · 24/08/2025 16:56

I dry indoors all year due to allergies. I have a pulley in the utility.

Diversion · 24/08/2025 16:58

Bedding gets dried in the tumble dryer. Anything else is usually dried on the clothes airer in front of the log burner or in a room with the dehumidifier going. I do hang washing out in winter if there is a good breeze and finish it off indoors.

Glitchymn1 · 24/08/2025 17:01

It’s wonderful isn’t it. I’ve just pulled the bedding off the line and put it straight on the bed!
We put washing out out as long as we can but we are North facing and sloped.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/08/2025 17:05

It gets hung outside all year round. Admittedly it’s in the catio - Perspex roof but all mesh sides. If there to much or I need it the next day I put it on an airer either in the bathroom near the window (always open) or the airer in the garage.

Passthecake30 · 24/08/2025 17:07

Love having it hang out. I’ve recently brought a heated clothes airer and a dehumidifier for the wetter / colder weather but not looking forward to using them - I get a sore throat from drying washing in the house, if anyone has any tips on how to prevent that, it would be appreciated! We don’t have a spare room for it to be hidden away.

lazyarse123 · 24/08/2025 17:13

We have a dryer but if it's stuff I'm not in a rush for it goes in the very small 2nd bedroom, so small I just refer to it as the big cupboard, on an airer with the dehumidifier.
We live in a park home and have an all glass porch which has been brilliant this year for drying stuff on the airer. I do have a whirly washing line but due to mobility issues I sometimes struggle with it.

Me too! I love the smell of washing on a really cold day. Smells different to any other time.

WinterNightStars · 24/08/2025 17:19

we use airer & dehumidifier. Very effective & cheaper to run than tumble dryer

Account734 · 24/08/2025 17:23

I still hang washing outside when it's cold and it partly dries, I then pop it on drying racks in the utility room to finish drying.

SliceofTosst · 24/08/2025 17:24

I was thinking about this today too. I hung my bedding outside and it was dry in no time.

Have no tumble dryer so just hang on a clothes horse in winter.

If it's a heavy duty wash that will take a long time to dry, I nip to a laundrette 5 mins away to dry.
