Is it too much to expect your cleaner to clean the toilet seat?

I have noticed my cleaner does not clean inside the toilet seat. Skid marks etc are left as they are. For a while ai let this go as people using the toilet should not leave it so dirty. However, I don’t always keep an eye on the guest toilet which is in our garden room. i would often ask her to clean it before I am expecting guests but I had to go in there for another reason and saw the toilet is dirty. She told me she had cleaned the bathroom.
Do your cleaners clean the toilet seat inside and out?

I clean my toilets before the cleaner comes! I know she cleans them anyway but I'd be mortified at her seeing anything disgusting that my family hasn't dealt with themselves! Teach your family better.

I do the same! No self respecting person would leave their toilet dirty like that and expect their cleaner to have to clean that. Disgusting.

KhakiOrca · 24/08/2025 06:06

I've been a cleaner and say out of 10 houses, 8 will leave skids. For instance , if someone has the shits, there will be dots of it under the seat. It's gross but I do clean it and wear gloves. I never use a toilet brush, just pour bleach down there. Does the job of removing bowl skids without the fear of a dirty bog brush flicking shit back at you. 😝

Marvellousmeadows · 24/08/2025 06:08

I would never expect our cleaner to clean other people's skid marks. Common courtesy to make sure this isn't left for them to clean !

So many people cannot read! But general feeling is what I thought - shouldn’t expect cleaner to clean inside the toilet.

Of course your cleaner should clean the inside of the toilet
but that doesn’t include scrubbing other people’s shit off it

it needs to be shit stain and skid free for them to clean

Flatandhappy · 24/08/2025 07:00

Yes I would expect a cleaner to clean a toilet properly, but it does seem like you are happy to leave it in a pretty disgusting state on the basis of “I have a cleaner, she can do it” and she has pushed back on that.

Zanatdy · 24/08/2025 07:04

My cleaner always cleaned inside my toilet, but i’d have never left it with skid marks for her to clean. So I don’t blame her for not cleaning that.

Obeseandashamed · 24/08/2025 07:09

That is really disgusting for her to have to clean. I hope you leave a brush and gloves for her to use specifically with the toilet.

But they have friends & family that can clear up their own shit!

Disgusting to leave if!

citygirl77 · 24/08/2025 07:43

So you know your toilet has skid marks, but you leave them? Yuck. Have you heard of bleach?

InMyOpenOnion · 24/08/2025 07:50

Joining the chorus that cleaner cleans the whole toilet but I make sure there are no skid marks before she comes.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/08/2025 07:57

Do you mean the toilet pan? The seat is the bit you actually sit on that lifts up and down. Getting shit on that would be very odd. If you mean skid marks in that pan then you need to maybe chuck some bleach down before the cleaner comes.

greengreengrass3 · 24/08/2025 10:02

No this is absolutely grim, I’d be mortified of my cleaner seeing shit in the toilets.
infact we don’t have any skid marks, each person has the decency to clean up after themselves.

DilemmaDelilah · 24/08/2025 10:50

I expect my cleaner to clean our toilets thoroughly, inside and out. Having said that, I always give them a quick going over before she comes so that there is no visible poo anywhere. Her job is to do a more thorough clean than I have.

DancingLions · 24/08/2025 11:17

I agree that a cleaner should not have to clean other peoples poop.

However, I am curious as to why the cleaner cleans the toilets if they're already clean? What are they actually cleaning that you haven't done yourself?

Of course your cleaner should clean inside the toilet. But they shouldn't have to do it if you leave it in that state.

ChristmasFluff · 24/08/2025 11:22

I am a cleaner. I clean the whole toilet.

It's VERY common to have skidmarks on and under the seat, you'd be surprised!

Some people do clean the loo before I clean, but most don't. I don't mind cleaning toilets at all.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 24/08/2025 11:25

I don't think that's what people are saying at all op. They are saying yes the cleaner should clean I side the toilet but that YOU should clean any skid marks first as it's entirely inappropriate to leave those to the cleaner....

Gettingbysomehow · 24/08/2025 11:25

I would not expect my cleaner to deal with skid marks ever. Neither do I expect him to empty and clean the cats litter tray.
He does clean and bleach the toilets but I make sure I remove anything nasty like poo marks first.

AAudreyHorne · 24/08/2025 11:26

Are you my ExH?
He used to think it was ok to leave welded on shit stains all over the inside of the toilet and then acted confused when I refused to stand and scrub someone else's shit off a toilet.
No one should leave a bathroom without wiping their own shit off the inside of the bowl, your cleaner is not your slave.

So, yes, cleaners should clean the whole toilet but not if that means demeaning themselves because the house owner is a dirty pig.

Flutterbees · 24/08/2025 11:50

saraclara · 23/08/2025 22:28

I make sure that my toilet is free of skid marks before my cleaner comes. Nobody should have to wipe other people's shit, unless that person is physically unable to wipe their own.

Agreed.

Notagain75 · 24/08/2025 11:53

I wouldn't expect a cleaner to clean a dirty toilet.
You should clean it yourself before she comes.

So many posts about toilets
So little time

There are a lot of toilet habits orientated threads on MN of late I agree....

Yep. I make sure all three toilets in our house are in good shape (two small kids so this is not a given!) and our cleaner then makes them sparkle! I would be embarrassed if she came across skid marks.

Livpool · 24/08/2025 11:59

YABU - toilet should be free of skid marks 🤢

Truetoself · 24/08/2025 12:06

Yes by toilet seat I meant the commode. I don’t understand the vitriol in the responses as all I was asking what cleaners in general do and some cleaners have commented they do clean inside and out which includes skid marks.
I don’t often go in the outdoor building but I will now assume that toilet will need to be cleaned by myself prior to guests and not expect cleaner to do it.
