To think it’s ok to use someone’s bin

Saw a cabby get out and put his litter in a residential bin. My husband got confrontational and asked if he lived there and if it was his bin. To be fair there are public bins on this particular street and really the driver should have put it in there imo but equally I don’t care if it means the rubbish is in a bin and not littered.

im annoyed that my husband was confrontational, especially as we were with our kids.

Yes you are being unreasonable - the driver should wait until passing a public bin or leave the rubbish in their car

No you’re note being unreasonable - rubbish went in a bin and was not littered on the street

So long as it's put in the right bin, I'm not bothered. By that I mean don't put rubbish in my garden waste bin, for example (yes it's been done).

I think it’s rude to use someone else’s bin. These days there are so many rules around what goes in bins you could be responsible for someone not having their rubbish collected. I often find people throw takeaway wrappers and drinks bottles in my garden cuttings bin and I have to put them in a bin inside my house or take a bottle to be recycled (my council doesn’t collect glass) because if the bin men see them they won’t take my garden rubbish away.

Yes your husband overreacted but it is a selfish thing for the taxi driver to do.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 23/08/2025 22:32

Why’s your husband being aggressive over bins ffs? Yes it’s normal to chuck innocuous rubbish in a bin if it’s out. If it’s dog poo or a lit cigarette then it’s wrong but a crisp packet isn’t worth a fight.

Your husband sounds like a dick who just likes to get in peoples faces.

I've learned a lot about bin collection services by reading these comments. I had no idea they could be so different! After reading them, I don't think the driver was right to use someone else's bin. He should have taken the rubbish home with him or used a public bin.

CommanderVim · 24/08/2025 17:34

I would be absolutely furious. There's not enough space in the bin for my rubbish I'm certainly not paying a fortune in council tax for some lazy arsehole to use it as well!

Pure laziness. The cabby should have taken his rubbish home.

landlordhell · 24/08/2025 17:35

Your DH’s reaction was extreme.

Pinkywoo · 24/08/2025 17:44

I'd much rather they put it in my bin than chuck it on the ground, and yes that includes dog poo (as long as it's in a bag obviously). I've got two in nappies so a bit more doesn't make any difference!

Tink3rbell30 · 24/08/2025 17:53

Of course it's fine. DH sounds like a massive ick.

Dontcallmescarface · 24/08/2025 18:02

I wouldn't have a problem with it. A bin's a bin a far as I'm concerned.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 24/08/2025 18:05

Why couldn’t the cabbie take his rubbish home? I’m with your DH. But then all of our bins are full as it is

Silverbirchleaf · 24/08/2025 18:13

So your husband was being confrontational about a bin that wasn’t even his? That to me seems the greater of the two evils.

In answer to your question, I guess if the bin was on the public street, fair game. Not if it were on private property.
