To think it’s ok to use someone’s bin

Saw a cabby get out and put his litter in a residential bin. My husband got confrontational and asked if he lived there and if it was his bin. To be fair there are public bins on this particular street and really the driver should have put it in there imo but equally I don’t care if it means the rubbish is in a bin and not littered.

im annoyed that my husband was confrontational, especially as we were with our kids.

Yes you are being unreasonable - the driver should wait until passing a public bin or leave the rubbish in their car

No you’re note being unreasonable - rubbish went in a bin and was not littered on the street

As long as it's put in the correct bin, no issue. How did your DH know that the cabby didn't actually live there, or he could be visiting his mum or a friend? So many people chuck rubbish out of their cars that I would think this a good thing really.

DiscoBob · 23/08/2025 20:24

I don't think it's great. I get cross if someone puts something in my recycling box and unfortunately just chuck it into the road. I know that's not nice but it's not my litter so why should I have it in my bin.

He asked the guy if he lived there. Then proceded to call the guy a tramp… whilst behaving like a tramp himself. I’m so mad!

Apparently I’m unreasonable then! I think I’m annoyed with my husbands reaction if anything and that it was so disproportionate. He gets so high and mighty and cannot see from anyone else’s view point. But now I’m just having a rant about hubby, sorry!

The actual issue is your husband, not the bins
Frankly if it wasn’t bin he’d be confrontational about something else
is he abusive physically or verbally to you?

Friendlygingercat · 23/08/2025 20:26

A relative visits a couple of times a week and takes away a binbag to put in the communal bins near him. So as a single person I have comparatively little rubbish to put out. Ive had kids dump coke and soft drink bottles on top of the cardboard in my recycling bin and then the bin people not take it if they see it. Nowadays when I hear the waggon coming round I nip out and inspect it to make sure nothing contraband has been added. Anything that doesnt belong gets dumped in the general bin. Then I wait while the bin gets emptied so I can pull it back in.

Your not wrong its situational and in that situation the taxi driver really didn't do anything wrong and your dh overreacted and was just nasty for no reason

chattyness · 23/08/2025 20:27

It didn't used to bother me but now with all the different bins to deal with , if there's something in wrong bin like plastic or metal in the household or cardboard bin etc then some bin men refuse to empty it.

Ponderingwindow · 23/08/2025 20:29

The rules for our bins are extremely strict. If people put rubbish in that violate those rules, our trash doesn’t get picked up. Among them all trash must be in bags and the lid must be closed completely so we do not go even the tiniest bit over.

we also have the idiosyncratic problem that I am allergic to most rubbish bags. I have to order special ones that don’t have the stupid scent barriers everyone is so fond of these days. Someone putting the wrong bag in the bin would mean I can’t go near the bin again until it is emptied and decontaminated. A truly ridiculous problem, but my reality.

Are most bin bags not regular unscented, I’ve not encountered scented as the default were you need to actively seek unscented. I buy brabantia they have no scent

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 23/08/2025 20:37

I think it’s totally fine but there are lots of folk on MN who are weird / enraged by this

BettysRoasties · 23/08/2025 20:42

Nope I have to buy my bin and then pay for it to be emptied yes it’s council tax but still. Iy
my bin isn’t collected because of you then I’ve got to pay to get it emptied by someone else.

Use your own bin or an actual public one.

Zov · 23/08/2025 20:47

I'm genuinely struggling with whether to pick YABU or YANBU as I find the wording against each one a bit hard to understand (maybe it's just me....)@MyCheeryMouse

But basically, your DH sounds like a bit of a dickhead.

Does he think he's hard or something? I would curl into a call and die of embarrassment if my DH displayed behaviour like this. Is he normally such a cockwomble? He needs to grow up. He sounds about 12. The taxi driver did nothing wrong.

If someone popped something in my wheelie bin (in passing) on bin collection day, and I saw them, I'd think 'LOL, wot a cheek! '😆But I would say nothing. Coz, ya know, it doesn't matter!!!!!

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 23/08/2025 20:48

A crisp packet - fine, a bag of dog shit - not fine.

VeryStressedMum · 23/08/2025 20:49

Why is he getting his knickers in a twist about someone else’s bin tell him to wind his neck in and shut up

Someone2025 · 23/08/2025 20:52

Laura95167 · 23/08/2025 19:53

If the bin is on the street for collection I think its fine if its not full. If its on someones drive, yard its not.

Agree
Don’t enter someone’s property to do it

LillyPJ · 23/08/2025 20:54

As long as it's in the right bin, wrapped up if it's messy, isn't too much and doesn't overfill the bin, then it's fine.

ScaredAndPanicky · 23/08/2025 20:56

Whilst it isn't your DH job to police other people's bins, we only get a collection every 4 weeks and it all has to be bagged. If it isn't they don't empty it. I'd be tamping if someone dumped something in my bin and it wasn't collected. I struggle to fit 4 weeks waste in, 8 weeks would be undoable.

ttcat37 · 23/08/2025 20:58

Depends how much rubbish it is! We have 2 in nappies so we really struggle with bin space. A chocolate wrapper or can would be alright but on bin collection day there would be absolutely no space for a pizza box or maccies so I’d be annoyed at that.

Gosh your bins must be minging in the summer. How is that even allowed!

Or the cabby could take his rubbish home and put it in his own bin.

MageQueen · 23/08/2025 21:04

Theoretically, it's fine. But in reality, bin collection is often nowhere near frequent enough and someone else using your bin can mean the difference between you being able to wait until collection day vs you having to take some of your rubbish to the tip yourself.

So a small packet with a leftover sandwich wrapper or something, sure, no problem. But anything bigger is potentially an issue.

Also, ho wit's bagged is an issue - a lot of people don't bag it and then the bin gets much dirtier much quicker because there's bits of food etc on the inside. that's just rude.

Ketzele · 23/08/2025 21:04

I think it depends on your binmen. Ours just lift out the bags, so any poo bags/ random detritus will just be left to get maggots and stink. So yes, I do go batshit fish wife at people using my bin, because their chosen solution to a small problem has left me with a bigger one.

I wouldn't mind if the binmen took everything away.

fthisfthatfeverything · 23/08/2025 21:08

I don’t think voters used your
YABU YANBU

He could. But it might be something a passenger left and he just wanted it out of his cab asap. It still feels less offensive than the husband's reaction.

JLou08 · 23/08/2025 21:16

Family of 5 here with a child still in nappies. My bins are full too the brim by most collection days from my own rubbish, I wouldn't be happy if someone else decided to use it.
