Pub Quiz question: 'How many months have 30 days in?'

What would your answer be?

OP posts:
cariadlet · 23/08/2025 00:12

I agree with those saying 11. It's a pretty well known trick question.

There are lots of 'classic' pub quiz questions that are designed to sound suspiciously easy, but which are actually trick questions.

From which animal is catgut made?
After which animal were the Canary Islands named?
In which country are the vast majority of Panama hats made?
For the playing of which sport was the famous club in Wimbledon, London established in 1858?
Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey are the three counties of which country? (with 'the' being a crucial part of the question).
The lyrics of which country's national anthem mention the King of Spain?

There are loads of them!

I have an idea about a couple but the only one I'm sure about without Googling is that the Canary Islands are named after dogs. It's the same root as canine.

11
I wouldn’t even say it is a trick question - it is just a fact.

PollyBell · 23/08/2025 00:22

It is a question how is it a trick question?

ColinOfficeTrolley · 23/08/2025 00:23

11 although I agree it's poorly worded. 'how many months ONLY have 30 days would have been a better way to word it. But worded the way you say, the answer would be 11.

Willquery123 · 23/08/2025 01:52

I'd have said 4 and not impressed if it was a trick question!

@DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat what was the answer they wanted?

latetothefisting · 23/08/2025 02:08

I disagree it's poorly worded- the whole point is to examine the exact wording to debate what it's actually asking (and then come to 11).

If it was "how many months have 11 days in them" it would be too obvious.

For the answer to be 4 the question would have to be "how many months are 30 days long" or "last 30 days" or similar.

also that's a very basic question for a pub quiz, barely a step up from asking how many months in a year, so the slight "trick" or debate/think twice element brings it more to a normal pub question standard.

I don't agree with 11. I would read it as exactly 30 days and I think most people would. Pub quizes are usually general knowledge not trick questions.

If it doesn't say 'exactly 30 days' then you're making an assumption and filling in a blank yourself.

'How many months have 30 days in?' seems like it's been written quite deliberately to be taken literally.

Loads of pub quizzes have trick questions or brain teasers. Always have.

Edited

It is not rocket science if the wording is what was asked it is a very simple answer needed, the is no smoke and mirrors the answer is 11

It is a question how is it a trick question?

Because a lot of people won't read the question properly and assume it to mean 'How many months are 30 days long'? and start naming them.

I had a great one recently....

There are 10 black socks and 20 white socks in a drawer. Without looking, how many socks would I need to pull out of the draw to be guaranteed a matching pair?

3?

I tried picturing pulling socks out of the drawer and what the permutations could be.

downundergirl · 23/08/2025 03:17

All except February.

teksquad · 23/08/2025 03:17

3 ?

I'd have answered 11 to the months question.

Yep, but the number of people who went 21 was mind blowing 😅

3, but neither the op question nor yours is hard nor a trick people can assume what they like the answers are not complex

Sure a pub quiz is not a serious issue but in society the problem is people dont think and make assumptions

The answer was... 🥁🥁🥁

11 🙈

We put 4 😂

OP posts:
autienotnaughty · 23/08/2025 07:56

If it was ‘only 30 days’ the answer would be 4.
if it’s 30 days the answer is 11.

mamagogo1 · 23/08/2025 07:57

11!

It's a shit question because it's purposely ambiguous and not as clever as it thinks it is.

I'm sure the answer they want is 11 but, as you could make a case for 4, it's a bad question to ask. A "trick" question (this hardly counts) must have a single right answer.

Oh I often make that! I can’t offer you any though I’m afraid! 😙

Jesus! My son for far too many years probably from 4 to 9 had a thing for really shit, irritating jokes and this was one of them!

He is now late twenties and still has a propensity for this kind of ‘humour’ around the table at Christmas.

This kind of question at a pub quiz is out of order and I would be disappointed.
