About to bail from Tokyo Disneysea - it is 35 degrees

Do you get less heat tolerant as you get older? About to bail from Tokyo Disneysea and leave my 20 year old son here on his own. Feeling a bit pathetic but am feeling faint and drenched in sweat. I’m 54. The queues are about an hour for each ride often in direct sun. I have no idea how people are doing it.

I think different people tolerate heat differently but there's also different types of heat - humidity is a killer and you also could be dehydrated. Can you go and sit somewhere in the shade and have a big cold drink?
We did Florida in October and currently in Europe doing various theme parks and it's been very hot! Tokyo Disney Sea is my dream park so I'd try and stay if it was me.

Boreded · 22/08/2025 04:38

just go inside to the air conditioning

onestepinfrontoftheother · 22/08/2025 04:50

I think heat tolerance has changed for me as I've aged. I'm also 54, and was on a short city break recently in Spain, and it was 35 degrees. I couldn't enjoy it, and I ended up staying in the hotel rather than exploring. I'm with you on this one...

No this summer in Japan has been brutal. I am at work, and I can barely get from the building to my car without weeping. Summer here is always hot, but the air pressure and humidity are worse than normal.

Get a Mickey ice lolly and have a sit down. Go on a chilled ride (head to the Mermaid lagoon) and plan to leave early.

Zanatdy · 22/08/2025 05:10

I’ve done Florida in August 3 times, 30 plus and it is tough. But lots of AC indoors so you need to just take some time out regularly when it gets too much. I didn’t know that park existed, off for a browse.

Usou · 22/08/2025 05:11

I have no idea why people visit Tokyo between the end of June and mid-October. The heat is unbearable and getting worse apparently.

Friends who live there stay indoors between midday and 4 pm.

TerrorAustralis · 22/08/2025 05:28

As rookie theme-park goers we made the same mistake at Tokyo Disney. You need to buy a fast pass to avoid queuing. (Not sure if you can get one once you're already inside.)

JustMyView13 · 22/08/2025 05:41

Is there not a bar or cafe where you can go and get something to drink, relax for a bit and then carry on?

Ponderingwindow · 22/08/2025 05:42

That is the daily temp in the summer where I live. Plus it’s extremely humid. We mostly stay indoors in the ac. Outdoors I wear spf clothing, big hats, and occasionally even carry an spf rated umbrella. This is not the fashion, I just don’t handle the heat well at all.

if you can find an umbrella somewhere, I highly recommend buying one. Instant shade.

also keep up on your suncream. Even the tiniest sun burn will make you feel worse.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 22/08/2025 05:43

SPF umbrella
drink Pocari sweat
go to the air conditioned rides with indoor queues

JudeyJudey · 22/08/2025 06:16

Would you be leaving your son on his own or are there others in your party? Just thinking it might be a bit awkward him being on his own.

Wanderlustholidaybug · 22/08/2025 06:18

Go, 35 degrees in Tokyo and the humidity is very high. We did last yea, managed it, but one day it got too hot we just went to the hotel in the afternoon for a rest and went out in the afternoon.

No way I will ve queuing in Tokyo for Disneyland in the middle of summer with a 20 year old.

Hithismyname · 22/08/2025 06:36

I love nice weather, blue skies and sun etc but hate really warm weather. I always go on holiday in the cooler months as its just not enjoyable. Some people love it. Would love to go to Tokyo though but in a cooler month.

Freegrass · 22/08/2025 06:40

Yes, I think it does, although it’s not so much the heat as the humidity.

I no longer take summer holidays in hot destinations for that reason. I now take my overseas “summer” holiday in May, and my holiday in the summer is usually in UK, Ireland, or other cooler location.

Figcherry · 22/08/2025 06:50

We live in SW France.
I've spent most of this summer in the house.
We have a pool but after a quick dip and dry off I'm exhausted again.

Our visitors have loved it. I think they're mad.

QuaverQuanta · 22/08/2025 06:56

If youre feeling faint, make sure you're taking on board water regularly (small amounts frequently rather than large amounts less frequently) and make sure you're eating to keep your salts and sugars topped up - it's loss of electrolytes through sweat that will make you feel rubbish if you're dehydrated

Objectrelations · 22/08/2025 07:12

I have stuck it out till 3pm. I am not enjoying it but have been keeping him company. I have now bought fast passes for him for some of the big rides I don’t want to go on that he really does want to do and am heading off!!

I sat in the shade often and drank plenty, used hat and umbrella etc but just couldn’t keep going !

The park is amazing though! We had to come now as we needed to get out of where we are living for two weeks as are between houses. Would NOT recommend August given the choice!!

Yes you can! It's on the Disney app.

tattooproblems · 22/08/2025 08:10

Oh I feel your pain. We went to Singapore last year - I was also 54 at the time - it was gorgeous, but the heat was UNBEARABLE. It would have been fine if we were just chilling at the pool, but of course, Singapore is for sight seeing, so we were walking around a lot. The sweat was trickling down my back. We ended up going back to the hotel every day at about 4pm, and sitting in the Executive lounge from about 5pm onwards, drinking cocktails and wine and eating canapes. Didn't even go back out at night, we just sat at the pool (which in fairness had a spectacular view over the skyline, with the MBS in the distance).

MermaidMummy06 · 22/08/2025 08:10

It's not just you. When planning our trip to Japan for earlier this year (cherry blossom season so was cool, but packed!) the forums I was on had this conversation going on almost daily:

'Soooo we're going in July/August...'
Everyone else: 'just don't. It's unbearable '.
'But it's the only time we can go'
Everyone else: 'Go somewhere else'.

It's an amazing country though.

Rosesanddaffs · 22/08/2025 08:13

@Objectrelations def not unreasonable, I just shove ice cubes down my top, oh the relief!

I look like a sweaty pig in the heat so it doesn’t matter if the front of me looks wet with the ice cubes xx

Abuye · 22/08/2025 08:20

In Japan the issue isn’t the heat per se but the humidity, it’s almost unbearable.

sugarapplelane · 22/08/2025 08:36

We were in Japan a few weeks ago and the heat/humidity was brutal. Didn’t stop us from having a fabulous holiday, but we were all uncomfortable.
AC all the way
