Camera in Airbnb

So we are just back from a 2 night stay in a gorgeous airbnb. We stayed in a house with a family and had a family room with a fridge and kettle but no cooking facilities. It felt a little awkward everytime we used the kitchen as we had to knock on the kitchen door to use it. I felt like a burden. Anyhow, on the second day, the owner went away and said we can use the kitchen but her kids will be around. Fine. Last night I noticed a camera in the kitchen and it made me feel so uneasy. I feel like why bother putting your place on airbnb if you're unwilling to trust your guests? Left such a bad taste on my mouth. Could have stayed another night but decided not to. The host was very nice.

Need to write a review now. Do I bother putting that in?

Am I being unreasonable here?

How do you know the camera is for watching guests, I know lots of people have cameras in their own homes.

In some places Airbnb listings have to include whether there are cameras I think, was it in the description?

Navigatinglife100 · 20/08/2025 16:56

If your issue is trust then I think you are very naive! Personally for a kitchen it wouldn't bother me and I can understand if it's a luxury home why she might want this security.

Personal bedrooms or bathrooms absolute no no!

Maddy70 · 20/08/2025 16:56

If it was room only and no kitchen facilities and then they kindly offered you use of the kitchen (along with theif family) then you have no right to say anything. That's their home. I have cameras for my dogs!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 20/08/2025 16:56

I can’t see an issue with a camera in the kitchen.

Linenpickle · 20/08/2025 16:56

Yes, put it in the review. Why didn’t you say something or cover it up?

Does it matter who it is for if im in it? Surely it is an invasion of privacy no matter where it is. She could have told me.

I think if the family were there and you were only booked in to use the room you had and not the kitchen then it was kind of them to allow it. It was their personal space so entirely within reason that they would have a security camera if they letting strangers in.

Do they have dogs? The cameras could have been to keep an eye on them if they were out and not in use .

Letting strangers in. Exactly. It is an airbnb and you have to be comfortable with letting strangers in or don't let them in at all.

Then get dressed first. Her kids were around. Maybe they don't want to see a stranger in a nightie in their kitchen too. 🤣

You left a day early because of a camera in the kitchen? Seems a bit extreme. Why didn't you just not use the kitchen?

CurbsideProphet · 20/08/2025 17:06

If you're staying in a stranger's house and must knock to ask permission to use their kitchen then I'm not sure you can complain about them having a camera in their private part of the property. I've never wanted to use air b & b for these sorts of scenarios.

Blueberrycake12 · 20/08/2025 17:06

Im finding this really interesting. I guess a lot of people don't actually mind being filmed without their consent.

No. I could have stayed on another night but decided not to. It is a trust thing. If you don't trust me being in your home then I don't want to be there.

I don't think I'll ever do it again.

We have an Airbnb and we wouldn't ever put a camera anywhere. But some do, the very least they should do is tell you which rooms have cameras in. I would put it on the review. It's something they should tell guest. It might be their home but if you rent space to others then there are certain things you should tell them. And that they can be filmed in certain rooms is one of them.
Can't believe how blasé so many posters are about this tbh.

parietal · 20/08/2025 17:11

Definitely mention in the review. You should be told about any cameras up front.

You should have been told, and you can a) complain and b) leave a bad review if you weren't told.

It's completely weird to have cameras inside a holiday home.

Hallelujah- thank you! I thought i was losing my mind!! She could have at least told me. I would have done out of respect for my guests.
