Camera in Airbnb

So we are just back from a 2 night stay in a gorgeous airbnb. We stayed in a house with a family and had a family room with a fridge and kettle but no cooking facilities. It felt a little awkward everytime we used the kitchen as we had to knock on the kitchen door to use it. I felt like a burden. Anyhow, on the second day, the owner went away and said we can use the kitchen but her kids will be around. Fine. Last night I noticed a camera in the kitchen and it made me feel so uneasy. I feel like why bother putting your place on airbnb if you're unwilling to trust your guests? Left such a bad taste on my mouth. Could have stayed another night but decided not to. The host was very nice.

Need to write a review now. Do I bother putting that in?

Am I being unreasonable here?

This place wasn't cheap

So what
neither was the hotel I stayed in last month
still didn’t get to nip into the kitchen in my undies and whip up a omelette at 7am

why - cos I booked a room not a self catering unit / home with a kitchen

If it's not part of the booking then it's really not yours and you don't get a vote….But since you keep ignoring this question I'm guessing it wasn't part of the booking at all

I’m slightly amused by the fact OP is absolutely ignoring answering this crucial question.

Actually, scrap that. I’m bloody impressed 🤣

I am also giggling. Am assuming now that this poor homeowner actually LEFT her home to get away from this poster who kept wandering around outside the space she booked half dressed. The host probably booked a different Airbnb. With a kitchen she could have to herself 🤣

One wonders what the camera caught of blueberry in her nightwear that has caused so much angst. Helping herself to the Lurpak, methinks.

Only place to get water was in kitchen, unless I used downstairs toilets.

That’s not really the point though. If you ‘rented’ I.e. Paid for a room without access to water (I assume you intended to use bottled water? Was the bathroom water not drinkable?) that is what you leave the review based on.

If when you got there they felt comfortable enough to allow you access to their kitchen (out of kindness, not contractual), then you should not mention the camera in the kitchen.

IF you rented the room with contractual access to the kitchen, then they should have told you about the camera.
You haven’t been clear what the detail of the rental was, so it’s impossible to gauge whether YABU or not.

SwingTheMonkey · 22/08/2025 12:07

So this person gave you access to their private space, out of the goodness of their heart, even though it wasn’t part of the booking and you intend to throw them under the bus by reviewing them badly on air bnb and potentially getting them into trouble for having a camera in their own, private space? CF of the highest order.

I'm really (genuinely) sorry if you're feeling bad about the thread. Please do think of the effect a negative review may have on the host too though. It would be kindest of you to not criticise them if this was not in an area you arranged/paid to use.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/08/2025 12:19

Why would a few questions about what you actually booked affect your mental health.

Is it because you only booked a family room and it was so kind of the host to allow you use of the family kitchen

as despite being asked several times you have not said if the booking included a kitchen or included the use of a kitchen.

and be very prepared for a poor or even bad review of yourself from the host if you do submit a review regarding a camera in the family kitchen - if use of the kitchen was not included in your booking...

I wrote the review and didnt even mention the camera in the end. I wrote the post asking for people's opinions , I just didnt expect some people to be mean. I genuinely felt uncomfortable when I saw a camera staring at me even though I know the host had kindly let me use her kitchen! I would have told anyone who used my house about this.if I had one. Anyway, thank you.

Im finding this really interesting. I guess a lot of people don't actually mind being filmed without their consent.

Was use of the host's kitchen in the deal or was the host being generous? And no, I wouldn't be filmed either.

Blueberrycake12 · 22/08/2025 14:12

I said in the initial thread that I had booked a family room that came with a small fridge.

Their wasn't a mention of the kitchen. The camera wasn't there on the first day but had appeared when th host left. I wasnt doing anything out of hand, o just wish I was aware. It just felt creepy.

Again, her private kitchen, her private camera.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/08/2025 14:20

Now you know in future not to book a ' family ' room - it wasn't a hotel you were booking into.

If you want to go self catering instead of using a hotel, fine
but you need to book a complete self contained unit - bedroom/s, kitchen and bathroom, then you can have as much water as you like whilst wearing your nightie in the kitchen.

PurpleThistle7 · 22/08/2025 14:38

If you booked a room what were you doing in her kitchen? I think this setup isn’t for you for future.
