New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer items above before posting. There are currently a number of interesting items on The Observer website and linked to above.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for fifteen very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

Yes, it really is Thread 16.

Keep to the path. No saltiness. May the fudge be with you.

Oh dear. I made a mistake.

I'm just looking into the sentencing guidelines for this also.

I can't help wondering if Timoth and Salray didnt have investment property. The house in Burton was sold very quickly. Perhaps they let it out? In late 80's and 90's,banks were practically throwing money at us. It was easy to get a mortgage back then.Could they have been juggling two or more mortgages. It would explain why they still had an massive outstanding mortgage after twenty odd years.
The house in Wales had a holiday annex; the earnings from that could be used to obtain a further mortgage.
Tenant in Burton moves out/ demands repairs/ doesn't pay rent.
The Walkers wouldn't have much in the way of working capital and so they might find themselves in spiralling debt.

GogleddCymru · 20/08/2025 15:32

Could be. Or both.

I suspect the time gap is too wide if the theft repayment loan was taken out in 2008 and the house court case was 2012. I seem to remember the loan was to repay the money stolen plus both sets of legal fees. Possibly the four credit card debts too, if they really existed.

So there is precedence for Penguin to pull these books when the author is not who they say they are. In this case, it was an extremely sensitive deception, endorsed by an eminent literary critic and published by a US imprint of Penguin:

Lovely shiny thread @DisappointedReader. Thanks to you and everyone who’s contributed, but particularly whoever has namechanged to @WhoDaresWinns. I’m on a train catching up and i am getting Looks from the other passengers because I keep laughing out loud.

(agree with PPs about the difference between Johnson’s memoirs and TSP re honesty, too)

Ps sorry about double post. Was exiting a tunnel so pressed ‘post’ twice. Luckily not pursued by a bear. Or a Winn.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch.

My point in bringing up BJ’s memoir and stuff like Katie Price’s various books about her life was only that some people appear to think that a non-fiction classification is some kind of guarantee, like an organic certification or ‘does not contain nuts’, when it really isn’t.

WhoDaresWinns · 20/08/2025 18:26

Its a bit off topic but if you enjoy long distance walking and have ever thought about walking from Lands End to John O'Groats ( which Raymoth have effectively done on their LL walk but in reverse) I can recommend the following blog whixh illustrates just how gruelling the walk is for an able bodied person. The photos and the humorous writing distinguish the blog. For Raymoth to have done it still scrsmbles my mind.

MNHQ and I have had a bit of an experiment with pinning, (not Winn-ing). It has unfortunately been unsuccessful, with the pinned post reproducing like rabbits.

Also only slightly off topic but your post reminded me of a friend who cycled from LE to J-o'-G, with an old schoolfriend of his for company. (2 bikes, not on a tandem!) This info. I heard from an illustrated talk he gave - the trip was partly for enjoyment but also to raise funds for a charity. Unlike the Walkers S & W, they were always met with kindness whenever they stopped for a breather, and more often than not, provided with free food and accommodation.

'Non-fiction' does not imply 'utterly truthful'. 'Unflinchingly honest' on the other hand...

It’s advertising designed to make you buy a product. Like a deodorant that ‘won’t let you down’ or KFC being ‘finger lickin’ good’ or Coke meaning you’re ‘opening happiness’ or Claudia Winkelman’s glossy hair being due to Head and Shoulders. We know perfectly well that her perfect fringe is emphatically not the result of being washed with a cheap dandruff shampoo!

SwetSwetSwet · 20/08/2025 19:57

If Claudia were found to be bald, I think people would be questioning the H&S advertisement... 😀

"Won't let you down" and "finger lickin' good" are advertising puff. They aren't in the same ballpark as publishers selling books on the basis that they are non-fiction unflinchingly honest, true stories when they are nothing of the sort.

Claudia being bald is more the memoir about being a Native American child in the care system and involved in gang crime turning out to be a wealthy white woman who grew up with her biological family in a rich area of California. I would say TS’s ‘unflinching honesty’ is more someone photographing Claudia’s bathroom and revealing a shower full of expensive high end salon products, without a bottle of HaS to be seen.

They’re exactly the same. Advertising claims. KFC is revolting claggy junk. Head and Shoulders won’t give you a glossy, healthy head of hair.

I think my moral compass isn't pointing in the same direction as yours on this.
