... Leslie Caron's character Miss Freneau in the 1964 "rom com" film Father Goose...! 😳

Just caught a bit of it, but there it is...

This wasn't especially uncommon in films at the time. It used to be considered an acceptable way to shock someone (usually a woman, surprise surprise) into calming down if they were panicking or hysterical. Load of bullshit, obviously. But not something I'd be shocked to see in a film of that vintage.

Bigcat25 · 18/08/2025 17:45

Women were also shown slapping someone across the face.

BMW6 · 18/08/2025 17:52

You forgot to point out that she slaps his face first - he slaps her face right back, at which point she goes all blubby 🙄

So SHE was the aggressor

Absolutely, I can recall many films of that time and lots of scenes where the woman is given a slap to bring her to her senses, for precisely as you say.

I'd just forgotten that Cary Grant did it in a few scenes too... 😔

ONLY after she hit him first!

In fact the last time she slapped his face he didn't retaliate but proposed to her!

I've watched it many times over the years and recently a couple of days ago.

Arlanymor · 18/08/2025 17:57

I randomly came across an episode of Will and Grace on You Tube the other day where Megan Mullally slaps Nick Offerman three times... yes it's a comedy, yes it's her husband IRL, yes it's acting, but it made me feel uncomfortable. This is the early 2000s I believe.

soupyspoon · 18/08/2025 17:58

It wasnt uncommon from both sexes, either as an attack or as a 'treatment' to calming someone! in films, probably in real life too

Whats your point OP?

CalicoPusscat · 18/08/2025 18:00

So many things come across very differently now although they were acceptable or at least tolerated back in the day.

My eyebrows were migrating towards my hairline at watching Clint Eastwood Gran Torino (sp?) recently at all the racial slurs

Cabinqueen · 18/08/2025 18:08

My point is that I'm unexpectedly surprised by my (clearly unreasonable 😁) feeling of dismay in forgetting that bit of the movie and having an "oh.." moment. 😕

Still very common - face slaps in Whiplash, Toy Story, Bridesmaids, Hunger Games, Batman Begins and The Social network.

More likely these days to be man on man, woman on woman or woman on man and less likely to be man on woman unless it's a clear sign of a villain/criminal.

But why when she hits him first???? More than once!!!

I don't understand your "dismay"?

Quite a lot of stuff from the past is a bit Shock @Cabinqueen (Especially pre 21st century!) I'm not 'woke' but some stuff makes me a bit like 'gosh!' Even some of the terminology in some comedies and dramas from the noughties was a bit near the knuckle. Like The Inbetweeners for instance. And Shameless.

I caught part of a Dirty Harry film some weeks back - mid 1970s, and a woman who was not 'conventionally' attractive hit on Dirty Harry, and he said 'I only do it with humans' and when she said 'oh, you cheeky fucker...' he punched her and knocked her over. Also, his boss said 'Harry hates everyone,' and went on to name insulting racist terms for Italians, South Mexicans, Afro Carribean people, and Asian people (South Asian and South East Asian.)

Also, in Take Me Home (a 1980s TV series,) featuring Keith Barron and Maggie O'Neill, (he was a taxi driver and she was his affair partner,) she said 'I haven't had sex with my husband for 2 months, I'm not doing it with him, I don't want to.' Keith's character said 'but that's his right, you're denying his his right!' Like it was her duty to provide sex for him. Also, it's inexplicable that a man was allowed to rape his WIFE, until the early 1990s! Twas a different time. Things are somewhat better now!

Dismayed that the attempt at man-bashing backfired, maybe?

Dolamroth · 18/08/2025 18:26

Oh I love Father Goose, it's so funny.

Especially when she gets drunk after the alleged snake bite.

I also love Operation Petticoat

Yep!

MorrisZapp · 18/08/2025 18:32

I can't watch most of those old films with matinee idol types in them. They're invariably wildly misogynist. Full of fully middle aged men with suits and brylcreem saying 'you silly little fool, can't you see I'm in love with you' to some terrified girl half their age. Ghastly.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 18/08/2025 18:36

I bloody love that movie & the filthy beast

Imaybeoldbutstillrandy · 18/08/2025 18:38

A sign of the times.

There's a scene in the John Wayne's film 'A Quiet Man' when he abuses his wife all the way home. They get home & it's clear that they go to bed afterwards. There are films (I forget which ones right now) when husbands spank their wives & the wife subsequently complies.

All unacceptable.

LittlePigRobinson · 18/08/2025 19:02

What ever you do OP don't watch any of the 'Carry on....' films or you might never get over it 😂
