What’s the most you’ve ever spent in a supermarket?

I just spent £125 in Home Bargains. We go once a month.

We bought lots of toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, skincare and haircare), cleaning products, candles, a new cutlery set and a doormat. We also bought some food i.e granola and yogurt.

I think this is the most we’ve ever spent in a supermarket in one go. What about you?

Is Home Bargains a supermarket?

Arlanymor · 17/08/2025 15:01

About £800 in a Carrefour on a booze cruise for wedding drinks back in the mid 2000s.

Snorlaxo · 17/08/2025 15:01

How many people in your household? I think a lot of people will spend more than that on their weekly shop, especially at Christmas time when they are more likely to buy extra meat, alcohol, snacks etc

doodleschnoodle · 17/08/2025 15:02

That’s less than my weekly food shop 😂 I was expecting a proper big amount! I’ve probably spent £300+ before if I’ve done a food shop and got some clothes/houseware bits. And for parties.

Snorlaxo · 17/08/2025 15:02

If HB is a supermarket then do you consider Ikea to be one? I’ve definitely spent loads more than £125

RonnIeAl77 · 17/08/2025 15:04

That’s a cheap one for me! We usually spend about £170 for a family of 4 abd 2 dogs. That’s everything though, inc toiletries. If I venture out to Sainsbury’s then I can easily spend £250-£300.

LimbOnTheBranchBranchOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheBog · 17/08/2025 15:06

HB isn't a supermarket, but I spend probably twice that every week, me, 5dc and 2 dogs.

The most I've probably spent is maybe £700/800 when I was going in for surgery and had to stock up and meal prep for a couple of weeks and think of all the extras they could possibly need.

mamaduckbone · 17/08/2025 15:06

That's my usual weekly shop, even at Aldi/Lidl. Feeding 4 adults is expensive.
I do remember spending about £160 in a local (very expensive) supermarket on holiday once, after a couple of drinks in the pub first...we bought all sorts of expensive treats and drinks but only had real food for about 2 days.

Edited

We usually spend around £70, so ringing up a total of £125 was a real shock to us!

We’re a two adult household though, plus two cats.

Home Bargains isn't a supermarket. The most I've ever spent in there or B and M is about £80. I spend about £160 on my weekly Aldi shop but also do top ups shops through the week.

AliTheMinx · 17/08/2025 15:09

My weekly shop.in Sainsbury's is usually £120-£160 including most toiletries and cleaning products. That's for 3 of us - me, DH and DS (13).

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 17/08/2025 15:10

Recently £160 but about £70 of that was stuff for DD for when she moves into halls. I usually spend around £80-90 a week for two of us (if she's with me and not at her dad's) or more like £50 if I'm on my own.

HotTiredDog · 17/08/2025 15:10

About £600 pre-Christmas meal entertaining, though that was quite a few years ago.

TaborlinTheGreat · 17/08/2025 15:16

I spend about that every week for 4 people. The most I'll have spent would have been the Christmas supermarket shop when we were hosting. At least double that.

I clicked on the thread because we are on holiday in Iceland (3 adults). Just went to the supermarket and bought one night's dinner, a few lunch and breakfast basics to laat a few days, plus tea, coffee and a few snacks. £165! I'd heard it was expensive here, but Shock

Plantatreetoday · 17/08/2025 17:23

When we get our 10% discount with the Lidl app we go a bit crazy.
Max spend £220 on food, toiletries etc. Not the middle aisle we close our eyes to that 😄

Gosh
Is that what most people spend these days
Question for other mumsnetters ?

ForWarmPeachBird · 17/08/2025 17:25

Around £300 at Christmas.

Caspianberg · 17/08/2025 17:30

About £500 when we were hosting large party.

£125 is less than our weekly shop for 3. So def that at least weekly

Bambamhoohoo · 17/08/2025 17:31

£400 ish- Xmas, parties and regularly during Covid when absolutely everything came in the one food shop.

SecretIrnBruDrinker · 17/08/2025 17:32

I'm a member of Costco, or as we call it, The Hundred Poundshop.

Flomingho · 17/08/2025 17:35

Over £200 if the big Christmas shop or I have been shopping for a party or gathering on top of the main weekly essentials. Tbh, money doesn't go too far unless it is in places like Lidl or Aldi.

PrimaniTu · 17/08/2025 17:39

I’m unable to spend less than £300 at Costco. However I do have toilet paper, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc to take me into the next century. Grin

lazyarse123 · 17/08/2025 17:49

About £150. There's only 2 of us so that is what we spend on pension day to include all toiletries and cleaning stuff plus food and then usually go about every 5 days for meal stuff and spend about £50.
One memorable occasion is when we were out and wanted something for a lunch and dinner so me in my wisdom saw a Waitrose and said 'oh we've never been shall we give it a try?" Omg we got one slice of turkey, a scotch egg, two pork chops, some veg and milk. It was just short of £30.00.
The turkey was actually to die for but never again.

Although their loaves of bread for 20p after 7pm are a must in our area

Rewis · 17/08/2025 18:16

I spend that amount for my weekly (okay a bit more than a week) food shop, and I live alone 😅

Can't remember exact numbers but propably circa £1000 when I bought food for the scout camp. £400 to buy snacks and drinks for my birthday party.

I think the biggest shock was when I moved to my own first apartment at 19 and had to buy all the basics and some basic electronics and all clening supplies at once. Learned to appreciate my parents unlimited kitchen quite quickly.
