To think that a 20mph speed camera on a main road is ridiculous

Just been to Wales for the day to meet my family. I’m driving along a main road near Flint and as I’m going through a speed camera at around 27 I’ve realised there is a sign saying 20 afterwards?! AIBU to think that 20 is a ridiculous speed limit on a main road? There are no indications from the road that this is a 20, it looks more of a 30-40 ( fairly wide road, not overly pedestrian).

if I get a speed ticket for 26mph I’m going to be pretty grumpy 😅

20mph is ridiculously slow.

tanstaafl · 17/08/2025 18:23

Gymrabbit · 16/08/2025 18:06

The issue is that you spend more time staring at your speedometer than watching the road ahead since keeping to 20 mph on a decent width road is very difficult.

Do you stare at your speedometer in the 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 zones as well?
or is it ‘ok’ to speed in those?

Theunamedcat · 17/08/2025 19:17

Duechristmas · 17/08/2025 15:37

That's ridiculous, of course you don't. You drive with the flow of the traffic and you know what 20 feels like, just as you would with any other speed.

Seriously in rural Wales it's a case of what traffic

No but I know my car and I know i need to be in 4th for thirty a quick glance at the dash confirming I'm not going over suffices plus the way my car is I can see if the zero changes to one I'm simply not used to doing 20 for me to be confident doing 20 without feeling a bit stressed I'm driving in an unfamiliar area on an unfamiliar road doing an unfamiliar speed can you not see how that isn't desirable

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 17/08/2025 19:23

How about the next time you're on a 30mph road and there's no other traffic, try practicing driving at 20 so you get more familiar with it?

Hiddendisability12 · 17/08/2025 19:25

It's a default speed limit in Cymru. I got a ticket as hebroad I'd always driven down went from 30 to 20. I was doing 28.

I think if it saves lives then it is, of course, not unreasonable

Bollocks. By that logic we should make every single road in the country including motorways 10mph

Catpiece · 17/08/2025 19:31

Newusernameforthiss · 17/08/2025 18:12

With all due respect, that's pure unadulterated bollocks. London has ALWAYS been gridlocked. I remember coming for days out as a child in the 80s and the traffic crawling along.

It really doesn't change your journey time much if the limit is 20 not 30. But it does save lives!

Here's some stats

You came for days out. I lived there and still do. My son is a London black cabbie. Tell him what I’ve said is bollocks. Central London is fucked.

Liliwen · 17/08/2025 19:38

Yeah it’s really annoying. Where were you? Sychdyn? Oakenholt? Some roads have been changed back to 30 but not many and my phone maps still shows them all as 30. You will get a speeding ticket if you were over 20 but under 30. I know of someone who got one going 22

I was born in the outskirts of London. I've lived in the south London suburbs and in Kentish Town, Crouch End, St Katherine's Dock and Seven Sisters in the north. I commuted to work in Farringdon, Soho, Fitzrovia and Camden by motorbike. Although I've now moved away I still regularly drive in London as I've got multiple members of family living there.

London traffic is awful and has always been awful. The 20mph zones have had zero effect. The only thing that did make a small but noticeable difference was the congestion charging zone.

cymraes12 · 17/08/2025 19:57

Another Welsh resident here - and did a speed awareness course a couple of months ago because I was caught doing 25mph on a 20mph road. I actually thought it was one of the roads that had stayed as a 30mph when the limit changed in Wales (as did my car which limits my speed to the limit for the road I’m on!) but this was obviously no defence to the speeding ticket. My course was full of people living in England who’d mostly been caught for speeding on a motorway and none of them could believe I was there for driving as slow as 25mph 😂

Well now you can factor in cycle lanes one of which has taken up half of Park Lane going towards Marble Arch. Traffic is reduced to single file whilst it sits more or less empty. Safer Neighbourhood bollocks that have planters of flowers placed across roads shutting them off to vehicles. Thousands of Uber drivers (I’m not getting into that). Stupid unlicensed death trap rickshaws. None of the above was there in the 80s

Mumptynumpty · 17/08/2025 20:19

If people are hit they are less likely to die, be injured, have life changing injuries, take a long time to recover, claim benefits due to injury etc etc.

Most victims of car crash injuries and deaths are children and the elderly.

But of course, you being inconvenienced is far more important and children and old people should be expected to die or live with injuries so we can drive our massive cars faster.

Jeez loueeze.

MyDogHumpsThings · 17/08/2025 20:37

I live in Wales and haven’t had any problems with the speed limit. There are a few roads where it feels too slow and I hope they alter the limit there, but I stick to it anyway. I don’t have to watch the Speedo. No speedy, no finey.

Mumteedum · 17/08/2025 21:02

I think when you don't know the roads it's tricky. Having to slow to 20 from a national speed limit road suddenly down to 20 is tricky. Some roads do those warnings to slow you down in advance but I didn't see any in Wales.

I got used to it after a few days but I have to confess I forgot about the 20 thing before I went and it's easy to get caught out.

Pizzamm · 17/08/2025 22:00

feathermucker · 17/08/2025 15:48

That particular road is very confusing with the limits constantly changing. The stretch you’re talking about doesn’t need to be 20

Oh, I’m glad that others agree! I’ve never seen a speed limit change so often on one road!

I don’t have a massive car at all, it’s a tiny hatchback. Just don’t want a fine for driving at 27mph in the one 0.2 miles of road it’s a 20 instead of a 40 (for no clear reason). Why is everyone acting like I’m deliberately speeding, knocking down teenagers and OAPs?! I always limit my speed on cruise control so never speed but my car won’t let me do that at 20 (and I hadn’t realised it was a 20!)

I live near Flint.
If it says 20mph I drive at 20mph even on main roads that used to be 40.
At least 3 times a week I will be overtaken by aggressive drivers beeping their horns and shouting abuse.
It's an absolute treat for me to drive in England at 30 perfectly safely.

TheGrimSmile · 18/08/2025 02:37

I think pedestrians are more important than cars. It won't kill you to slow the fuck down a bit.

It’s not difficult, you just shift down a gear.

@Pizzamm its been the law in Wales for a while now. 20mph is the default in areas which used to be 30.

It’s was the A548 through Flint.

This is isn’t exactly the same road but similar situation other than the 30mph is now 20mph. Hardly clear..
