To think that a 20mph speed camera on a main road is ridiculous

Pizzamm · 16/08/2025 17:58

Just been to Wales for the day to meet my family. I’m driving along a main road near Flint and as I’m going through a speed camera at around 27 I’ve realised there is a sign saying 20 afterwards?! AIBU to think that 20 is a ridiculous speed limit on a main road? There are no indications from the road that this is a 20, it looks more of a 30-40 ( fairly wide road, not overly pedestrian).

if I get a speed ticket for 26mph I’m going to be pretty grumpy 😅

20mph is not unreasonable. It might feel slow but it saves lives. I did a speed awareness course and it was an eye-opener.

LlynTegid · 16/08/2025 18:57

A low speed limit should not just rely on signs, the road should be designed such that you slow down almost without the need of a sign.

It would also be easier if people did not have larger engined cars, which unless you are pulling a caravan or towing something else, are completely unnecessary.

ACynicalDad · 16/08/2025 18:57

I think 20 is slow unless it's a built up area, some dual carriageways near us are 20 which seems insane. But I'm generally happy for it to be on the slower side.

childofthe607080s · 16/08/2025 18:59

It only feels slow until you get used to it - it’s the change not the speed itself that takes getting used to

when I am in 30mph towns now it feels so much more stressful and you can easily imagine accidents are more common and serious

Rainydayinlondon · 16/08/2025 18:59

Agree with a PP that one is just concentrating on the speedometer, rather than the road ahead. In fact trying to not exceed 20 mph is nigh on impossible , certainly in my car. I end up driving in second gear which I’m certain is terrible for the environment.
25mph on the other hand is a safe, sensible speed. Not sure why they had to reduce the 30mph by a third!
And then on windy country lanes which are obscured by hedges, it’s fine to go at 60, mowing down wildlife at the same time.
So ridiculous

Sskka · 16/08/2025 19:07

What are the accident/death stats? Some towns near me lowered their limits to 20 for about a year, but somebody must’ve thought twice because they’re all 30 again now.

I will say though that occasionally I come across a dual carriageway in a big open area where the limit is 30, and you feel like you’re barely moving, it’s so unnatural. I can’t imagine what it would be like at 20.

If you find it stressful to drive safely at 30mph then you probably shouldn’t be driving a car at all.

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2025 19:09

If you thought it should be 30mph it’s hardly a ‘main road’. And the default in Wales is 20mph. You should ALWAYS know what the speed limit is. If you get a ticket, you will deserve it.

Nelliemellie · 16/08/2025 19:16

I felt that this was too slow, but have got used to it now, but think twice about taking the car now to do any shopping etc. it is tedious to drive that slow. Takes any enjoyment out of it, and I am a safe driver.

Pizzamm · 16/08/2025 19:16

It looked like a 30 because it should (and would) have been a 30. I was looking at the signs carefully but as I said they change very frequently and I obviously missed this one.
If I had just assumed it was a 20 then when the road was at 40 I’d have been driving 20 miles under the speed limit which I’d argue isn’t any safer.
Hopefully it won’t get flagged or I’ll just do the speed awareness course. I’ve never done one but frustratingly they say to use the road to gather the speed limit if unsure and this should definitely be a 30!

Wales and London are run by utter pricks who are desperate to take money from motorists while trying to make driving as difficult as possible, and in outer London’s case not making public transport cheap enough to make it a viable alternative.

What's unaffordable about £1.75 for unlimited buses and trams in an hour?

Theunamedcat · 16/08/2025 19:18

My dd lives in Wales there is one section which is a ballache goes from 60 to 20 it's down a steep hill too the last time I came home my neighbour commented about the dirt up my car i said that's not dirt that's brake dust! I can understand it by the schools and churches but randomly on a road with no other reasons is stupid it was easier when it was thirty especially as you have a steep hill directly following it so you hang onto your brakes to slow right down then you have to climb up the hill and your car makes that distressing stressed noise because it really wants to be in third and have a little run up

If your local you know it's coming around that bend but I'm not local and it's a pain in the....brake pads

In Wales? Genuine question dd doesn't catch the bus

Pizzamm · 16/08/2025 19:23

I’d love to travel by train from my house to where I was going in Wales however it would cost £25 return per adult and take twice as long, compared to around £10-15 in fuel!

Yes exactly I’m not complaining about it when it’s near schools etc or side streets, but this was completely nonsensical

Exactly this. Just drive safely and obey the law.

I live in London

I got done for doing 24 in a 20

I did the speed awareness course. If they put a camera at a spot it's because at least two people have been killed there in the past

I feel my DC are safer because of the 20 limits

Sorry you got caught but they should let you off the points this time, just do the course (not sure if they will fine you)

I wish it was the case where they put cameras where people had been killed. Near where I live there have been three deaths and a very serious injury plus a fair few minors and there still isn't a speed restriction

Locutus2000 · 16/08/2025 19:43

changedname1979 · 16/08/2025 18:00

I completely agree, 20mph is ridiculous.

as for a ticket, that’s 30% over the limit so if the camera was work I’d be expecting a ticket.

prepare yourself for all the comments from people on here who NEVER creep over the limit.

I never get this victim mentality from the poor speeders.

It's really easy not to fucking speed.

Locutus2000 · 16/08/2025 19:44

Gymrabbit · 16/08/2025 18:06

The issue is that you spend more time staring at your speedometer than watching the road ahead since keeping to 20 mph on a decent width road is very difficult.

If this is the case you shouldn't be driving, and most new cars are automatics with cruise control and speed limiters.

Speeding is a choice.

I live just over the border.
We also used to holiday (on the coast) there a couple of times a year.

We never go into Wales now.
It's not worth the points on my license or to crawl along in 3rd gear.

3rd gear? What's that?

The greatest saver of lives is if no one drives, ever.

JaceLancs · 16/08/2025 19:47

Just got back from Wales and was well aware before I went that 20 was the rule - so stuck to 20 unless it told me otherwise
Slightly annoyed that Google maps still think it’s a 30 though as I rely on my phone as a sat nav in unfamiliar locations and it’s normally up to date and accurate even giving live updates if a different route is quicker

ClassicalQueen · 16/08/2025 19:51

It’s the standard limit in Wales and it’s not exactly a secret. Drive to the speed limit, it’s much safer for pedestrians.

Some of the roads have been changed to 30mph now, so it may be accurate.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/08/2025 19:54

I’m in London, perfectly happy with it being 20 and never got a ticket.

happy with the fewer dead kids too
