The Biggest Loser was a disgusting TV show

Just been watching Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser on Netflix. Why do people hate fat people like me so much? Someone nearly died while doing the show. Obese people get so much hate and ridicule in society and the people behind The Biggest Loser took advantage of the contestants' desperation. It was just another chance for people to make fun of fat people and profit off of fat-shaming.

Oh yes that was it 10 years younger! They got randomers on the street to rate how old the person looked before and after their makeover and they all
had chemical peels and veneers

A PINT of Bailey's?!
😯😯🤢.

I remember Heat magazine circling things like bulges on female celeb bodies. So toxic.

YANBU but there is so much reality TV I look back on from the last 20 or so years in horror. And many of them feature a certain Simon Cowell too, like this one from X Factor where the whole nation used to sit and watch young women getting torn to pieces for entertainment
.

That's awful she's not massively overweight but even if she was it's supposed to be about her voice

Yep I remember that too
and articles about celebrities weight changes over the years and who looks the best and worst in a bikini with zoomed in pics of their cellulite.

Boomer55 · 16/08/2025 16:02

Reality shows are just sheer, silly rubbish. Best avoided. 🤷‍♀️👍

I’m with @Rallentanda , sounds delicious! I’d never do it either though. Shame 😂

Exactly. And she had a beautiful voice.
Quite rightly I know we're not meant to talk badly about anybody's looks, but let's face it the two people laying into her (Simon & Louis) weren't exactly anything special to look at themselves.

What is wrong with you people 🤣🤣🤣.

caramac04 · 16/08/2025 16:06

I wonder what happened to the lovely young woman in the YouTube clip? I hope she’s happy because she seemed a genuine person with a great singing voice. It’s a double edged sword being in the music industry; probably not so bad if your parents are and they know the ropes.

Both of them no stranger to the surgeon’s knife, either 😬

TheLarkAscendingRose · 16/08/2025 16:07

A friend's husband loves shows about fat people (he isn't fat himself.) He also loves the show where people are evicted from their homes, which says it all really.
If he lived in past times he'd probably have enjoyed watching hangings or going to look at patients in mental asylums for entertainment. He's also racist. It's a specific unpleasant personality type.

It’s just so moreish 😂 I don’t have it in the house. In case my hand slips over a beer glass

IIRC they marketed it as making the ordinary people feel better because they can see that famous people have body issues too. But it was just nasty.

Same with covers professing how worried they were about some celeb being "too thin". Because if they have got an ED then sticking them on the front of your magazine and pointing it out is really going to help them. 🙄

I caught a clip of a “dieting programme” recently where an overweight and skinny person eat each other’s meals for the day. They both end up shocked at what the other eats with clear judgement on their respective faces. What is the point - is it for viewers to judge the 2 meals?

Was that super size Vs super skinny? It was over a few days usually not just one day. At least that show presented the fact that super skinny isn't healthy either and the skinny ones often also had terrible diets and were malnourished.

I have to admit I loved that show at the time

And Simon looks utterly ridiculous now with all of his plastic surgery .

I remember a celeb version of this, Ann Widdecombe was in it. And a guy called Tommy who used to do programmes with Alan Titchmarch. He’d drink a pint of Baileys of an evening.

Ever since seeing it, I’ve dreamed of a pint of Baileys. I bloody love Baileys. Never done it, as obviously it’s insanely unhealthy.

The programme where they did teeth and all that was Ten Years Younger. The women got spruced up and strangers in the street the production staff’s friends had to pass judgement on them. Hateful stuff.

I could easily drink the equivalent of a pint of Bailey's over an evening in a nice glass with ice ( I don't think I have ever done that but I would be able). Was he drinking it from an actual pint glass?

Rallentanda · 16/08/2025 16:08

I have the opposite problem, there is too much of it in my house I always somehow end up with being gifted a bottle of two at Christmas. Even though I don't like and have never drunk it.

I never know what to do with it as the food bank won't accept it and I'll block my plumbing if I pour it down the sink. So end up waiting until I can regift it the following Christmas. Like an endless bloody Bailey's roulette wheel.

Emelene · 16/08/2025 16:18

Interesting post… I just reflected we used to watch Biggest Loser as a family when I was a young teenager with my younger sister and that was considered normal and suitable family viewing. My mum has always been overweight and my sister is obese now but on Mounjaro for her wedding. There’s a lot of dysfunction around food and I struggle too. ☹️

He does.
He did say he regrets it now but I suspect that is just to try and avoid any backlash now the narrative around body acceptance and confidence has changed.

It makes me so angry, how smug and pleased with himself sat there like God, passing judgement. Still karma works well, Samantha Reay is still beautiful whereas Simon now looks like a melted Halloween mask.

HelloCheekyCat · 16/08/2025 16:26

I watch this too, didn't watch the actual show but was very aware of it

I was watching it just constantly thinking that if course it wasn't going to be sustainable because that much exercise isn't realistic in the real world and they never actually go to the root cause of WHY they were obese in the first place.

I felt sorry for Danny, he said he thinks he's lost 1,000lbs over the years, it's sad he's never managed to keep.it off

CatKings · 16/08/2025 16:28

Honestly I used to watch it religiously. I’m a yo-yo dieter and I would sit on the exercise bike and watch it. I enjoyed Jillian shouting (and then would do the shred dvd). I follow one of the woman who was on an early season (Suzy) and she said she was anorexic at the end.
The problem when you put money as the prize it’s always going to go wrong.
i used to like Obese: a year to save my life. It was a more realistic approach.

beemamare · 16/08/2025 16:29

What was that show that had a creepy presenter and they'd get a very slim person to swap diets with an overweight person? Used to find it really upsetting!

That was supersize vs super skinny and I think the presenter was that TV doc, Dr Christian
That show is like catnip to anorexics
