Dishes that smell of egg

WickedElpheba · 14/08/2025 22:11

My DH thinks I'm bonkers for this but I know I'm not the only one.

If we eat eggs then the pan, plates and cutlery need to be washed and the bleached to avoid the horrible eggy / fresh / wet dog smell which otherwise fills the kitchen and contaminated every thing else washed with said items

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I’m phobic about eggs and won’t let my husband cook or eat them if I’m in the house. I know it’s unreasonable but I cannot cope with the smell or appearance of eggs. He has a separate pan to cook them in, that I would never touch. We do keep pet chickens, which I love dearly. But I’m vegan and would never consider eating their eggs!

Your DH is right. I’ve never bleached anything I’d use to eat with, that’s crazy. Never had that weird smell you describe either. Just wash them up in hot soapy water or use a dishwasher.

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 23:14

Yes OP, I hate that smell, I don’t use bleach though just hot, soapy water.

Is your husband allowed to eat their eggs?

Is your husband allowed to eat their eggs?

Yes. But only when I’m not in the house! We give a lot of eggs away to friends and family.

chowmeinz · 14/08/2025 23:53

Your need to rinse in cold water then wash in cold water end fairy then hot wash then dishwasher if you have one to prevent the egg smell. Washing in hot water immediately makes the smell worse

honeyytoast · 14/08/2025 23:56

Oh is that what causes the wet dog smell?

PeachesRule · 14/08/2025 23:59

As above, cold water first to rinse off the egg. I can’t stand eggs but my family love them so have learned to tolerate them and they have learned that nothing eggy goes in the dishwasher or in hot water.

imcountingtothree123 · 14/08/2025 23:59

Yeah wet dog smell is horrible. We just hand wash and then dishwasher anything involving egg.

landlordhell · 15/08/2025 00:00

I don’t generally sniff the plates . Washing up or dishwashing is sufficient.

Yummybread · 15/08/2025 00:01

Yes!! It's horrendous... I have realised that if I put eggy stuff in the dishwasher it makes the whole load smell eggy, meaning I had to rewash all the cups and mugs etc! Didn't know the trick about cold water... I'll be trying that!

SingtotheCat · 15/08/2025 00:02

Somebody in your house has been opening the dishwasher, farting into it and then closing it for you to discover.

Betheadore · 15/08/2025 00:03

Not just you, op.

I'll be trying the cold water rinse, thanks.

Peaceisenough · 15/08/2025 00:05

I’ve also noticed that after I’ve eaten egg, the glass I drink water from smells bad too. It is weird. I like eggs but just not that after smell.

I have got a very strong sense of smell though, I wonder if we all do?

Charabanc · 15/08/2025 00:05

Wut. Wut is this.

TonytheTRex · 15/08/2025 00:07

My OH thinks I'm bonkers for this, I always run the dishwasher twice if there has been anything remotely eggy in there, everything stinks otherwise!
People think I'm strange for not liking eggs, I honestly can't stand them 🤢

Talipesmum · 15/08/2025 01:14

If we put eggy plates in the dishwasher everything comes out smelling slightly of egg - I don’t particularly notice it on plates but I do on glasses and mugs :-(
So we wash eggy things in the sink - best to use cool water if it’s raw egg to stop it cooking and solidifying. Lots of rinsing. But no need to bleach them!

Does it have to be Fairy Liquid?

And it won't "prevent" the smell (which I'm personally unaware of), it would just remove it, surely.

I can’t stand this either. Immediately need a different glass.

It’s not just you OP. I bleach the plates. I also won’t use the sponge again once it’s been used for something eggy as I cannot stand the smell. I can smell it on ‘clean’ plates and glasses and I’ve re washed entire dinner sets, mugs etc before now.

I’ve always had it but it got worse when I was pregnant. It makes me physically sick, so much so that I can’t carry on with it or be in the kitchen after I’ve cooked eggs. TMI sorry! I love eating them though.

I’ve learnt there’s an Arabic word that describes this smell on plates, I think it’s Zankha(?)

It’s interesting you mention pregnancy because when I first got pregnant everything smelled eggy. All dairy products specifically, yet there is no connection between them. How strange.

Of course it doesn’t have to be fairy. It can be any brand of washing up liquid you choose.

When I said it will prevent the smell I mean prevent it from remaining on the plate which is what OP was talking about.

Jeez.

Sharptonguedwoman · 15/08/2025 07:02

We just eat eggs and the put the plates in the dishwasher. Are we psychopaths?

categorychaos · 15/08/2025 07:10

Thank you OP - my DH thinks I’m mad. I have to sniff every plate before use “just in case”. He can’t smell it but adult DD can. Weird horrid smell and also not just after cooking eggs.

OxfordQuestion · 15/08/2025 07:11

I don’t know what you’re talking about re: eggs.
I get a weird smell off the fruit bowl sometimes and have to wash multiple times in very hot soapy water to make it go away.
But eggs? Nope.
