Dishes that smell of egg

My DH thinks I'm bonkers for this but I know I'm not the only one.

If we eat eggs then the pan, plates and cutlery need to be washed and the bleached to avoid the horrible eggy / fresh / wet dog smell which otherwise fills the kitchen and contaminated every thing else washed with said items

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I hate that smell! I don't like putting anything used to cook eggs in the dishwasher or everything comes out smelling eggy. My husband thinks I am mad, but I can always tell.

BlackSheepThisYear · 15/08/2025 07:33

My DH and DC love eggs but I hate the smell afterwards. I can smell the washing up when I walk in the kitchen, and then I sniff the plates when they’re dry and they stink. Fairy washing up liquid helps but I’ll also try the cold rinse first.
We call the smell ‘eggy woof’ in this house Grin

Yes!! It's horrendous... I have realised that if I put eggy stuff in the dishwasher it makes the whole load smell eggy, meaning I had to rewash all the cups and mugs etc! Didn't know the trick about cold water... I'll be trying that!

Edited

I honestly don't think I smell that smell. They smell eggy but as soon as they are washed, they smell fine. I'm going to try that cold water trick though, in case othe rpeople are more sensitive to it. I hate my house smelling unwelcoming.

It’s so odd because my DP can’t smell it at all but to me it’s so overpowering

Please don’t bleach anything you eat with / on. Even if you rinse it completely it’s still so dangerous, the chemicals linger. It’s not designed to be anywhere near our food!

Agreed. You are not allowed to use bleach anywhere on food production surfaces, or crockery and cutlery, in a commercial kitchen.

If you must use something, use Milton, which is foodsafe.

WickedElpheba · 15/08/2025 22:47

I bleach our plates and cutlery all the time (after eggs) and then just rinse! 😬

Not a lot of bleach, like a tablespoon in a full sink of water and then rinse.

I may invest in Milton but will it get rid of the smell??

The eggy smell contaminates everything in the dishwasher… I wash the offending items in hot soapy water. Seems to do the trick.

WickedElpheba · 15/08/2025 22:50

Also I tried cold water and vinegar today and it did not work!

It’s gross I agree. I try and do a quick wash on dishwasher after the full wash. That seems to help

Shivvy1 · 15/08/2025 23:41

Omg I thought it was only me lol anyone I’ve ever mentioned this to looks at me like I’m mad 😂😂. Yes my partner also thinks I’m mad as he can’t smell it. Anything I used to cook/eat eggs is washed separately from anything else. I also agree if put in dishwasher everything smells of the egg smell. Hate it but love eggs 😂. Will also be trying the cold water rinse too

ninjahamster · 15/08/2025 23:42

Yep! And contaminates the whole dishwasher load..

HeyThereDelila · 15/08/2025 23:43

There’s been a thread on this on Mumsnet before! I think it was something like “why do my plates smell of egg?”

Apparently it’s a reaction to something on the crockery.

ThatRoseBear · 15/08/2025 23:45

I wash egg dishes in the sink with a cap of Dettol. I never put them straight in the dishwasher because they make every thing in there absolutely stink

WickedElpheba · 23/08/2025 16:25

@ThatRoseBear I haven't tried Dettol as it's not something I buy

I tried Milton spray yesterday and that works!

I could smell egg and couldn't work out why as I'd bleached the pan, plates and cutlery. I realised it was the cooker as some pancake mix must have spilled. A few sprays of Milton sorted it!

can You say exactly what you did with the Milton spray. Step by step. I’d love a solution. Thanks!

For the cooker I wiped it down with a cleaning wipe (as I didn't want egg on my cloths!) just so it was clean and then I sprayed some Milton (maybe 5 sprays altogether) and left it for about ten mins (think there are instructions on it about how long to leave it) then wiped with kitchen roll

If using on dishes, which I haven't done yet, I'd rinse them first ideally with cold water so no food on them, and then spray Milton and leave before rinsing it off

it worked on the cooker so I may get some Milton tablets so use on dishes instead of bleach
