AIBU To want to stop our neighbour’s cats crapping on our grass several times a week?

Does anything work?

We’ve tried chilli pepper in one flower bed but it doesn’t work for long. They keep crapping in the middle of the grass regardless.

I know it isn’t fox crap as that smells and looks different.

I know cats just don’t crap in their own gardens so how is it ok that the owners know that and just shrug?

It is such a huge imposition on your neighbours.

Neighbours and their pets are a pain in the arse.

After a while the cat shit thing becomes very triggering. I live in social housing. People generally have fucked up values including not seeming to get it that incessant dog barking and cats leaving sludge in your garden feels like an invasion of your space over time.

Cat shit neighbours moved, now I have dog barking neighbour. Glad I don't have both combined right now.

The only thing that helped a bit was spraying water at the annoying prick. I love animals and it made me have nothing but disdain eventually. Cats are annoying with this shitting thing.

I'm not going to respond to that having seen your other posts. Have a pleasant day.

Understandable. I appreciate it can be hard for some people to admit they should be doing more for their pet and their neighbours when they can’t be bothered and no one is forcing them.

I understand all of this and commiserate.

We had this issue until my DH peed around the perimeters of our garden. Bit grim I know but we were desperate as had to be on constant poo watch in case our toddler stepped in it. He only did it once and the neighbours cat hasn't been back since!

Can’t say I blame it really 🫤

KandyKrush · 15/08/2025 01:51

Honestly I find a water gun works wonders. I only ever had to spray them once or twice and they never came back.

I like cats but they were killing all the wee birds and I didn’t want my kids stepping in shit in their own garden.

Just want to add, using ursine on your plants will do them the world of good.

Why should WE have to pay for stuff to keep other people’s cats out? The owners should be paying for netting etc!

The Law does not agree with you unfortunately. Until the law is changed if you want to cat proof your garden, you pay.

JoyDivision79 · 15/08/2025 07:59

The legalities are appalling. The fact we also have this 7am to 11pm rule is also appalling.

The law is an ass.

It's ok for my neighbours dog to come out and bark directly under the window where I'm hoping my teen won't wake at 7.10am including Sundays.

I’ve seen them crap, several times. It’s the cats. Our gardens are mostly all grass, no soil or veg beds here. The cats crap everywhere.

They even crap in the roads and footpaths here.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/08/2025 08:26

We put anti-climb spikes on our fences because we were absolutely sick to death of the cars getting in and shitting on our lawn. Not only that, when we had our Guinea Pigs they’d bother them while they were out in their run and try to paw at them through the sides. I was always on pins worrying about them getting in and harming our little pets, so it wasn’t fair.

Another thing that works is curry plants and lavender. They used to crap on our front too, so we planted a border of curry plants and lavender and they’ve not been back since.

I don’t hate cats, I just dislike people who think it’s acceptable to buy multiples of them, on a new build estate, do nothing to cat proof their gardens, stick a cat flap in their back door then leave the rest of us to deal with the literal shit they cause. If you want pets deal with their own shit like the rest of us do.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/08/2025 08:29

We’ve tried lots of things but the bastard things keep coming back as their own garden is just a plastic carpet and we have hedges, borders and a lawn 🤬 We’re trying a motion sensor sprinkler when we can afford it but right now all we can do is scare them away whenever we see them.

ilovesooty · 14/08/2025 12:42

My cats use the litter tray before going out or generally use the bit under the hedge at the end of their own back garden. However this will be yet another thread of people who want to raise their dislike of cats and their owners.

My cats are the same. And I regularly top their corner up with fresh compost so they don't have to go looking for new places.

TY78910 · 15/08/2025 08:34

CopperWhite · 15/08/2025 01:29

So don’t let the cat out because you know it’s a risk to birds. You have less moral right to a pet than a baby bird has to life.

My cat is fat, old and lazy, I doubt he is hunting little birds when he can’t even be bothered to jump a fly.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 15/08/2025 08:38

Cats don’t like tin foil, apparently, so you could put a sheet of it on top of their usual places. It might be enough to stop the habit.
Definitely worth a try.

AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti · 14/08/2025 20:27

I’m entirely unsure as to what the point of a pet cat is.

I’d genuinely ask the same question about dogs. They’re a complete pain in the arse.
They’re like a really needy kid, but who never actually grows up.

Yes, I'm very aware of my cats' habits and I'm pretty sure that their impact on my neighbours is pretty minimal. It hasn't stopped the sort of posts directed at cat owners that I expected though.

CrushingOnRubies · 15/08/2025 08:45

Watching for inspiration. Our dog likes to eat it

CaptainSevenofNine · 15/08/2025 10:48

We had cats using our garden as a litter tray. DH hated it. I didn’t mind as I’d grown up with cats. Neighbours with cats kept telling us to get cats and then no one would poop in our garden.

I wanted cats anyway, we got cats and now no cat or dog poops in our garden!

So get your own cat(s) and join the ranks of selfish pet owners (TM to a PP).

I heard that and then I saw one pooing while having face essentially in the freaking curry plant😂 weirdo. Didn't want to smell what it dealt I guess

Efrogwraig · 15/08/2025 18:56

Tiger or lion poo from nearest zoo.

You can buy these motion activated high pitched noise things that deter cats. Our neighbour has one, probably because of our cat 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fair play to him as the noise goes off ALL the time and it annoys me probably as much as my cat annoys him.

This! we used them and worked for us

I’ve got one of these, it’s not working. I cleared up a pile yesterday from directly in front of it. I think the cat was making a point.

Unless you've seen them with your own eyes it could be cat from anywhere in your area. Not sure they can do anything about it. Don't put gravel down is my advice.
