AIBU To want to stop our neighbour’s cats crapping on our grass several times a week?

Does anything work?

We’ve tried chilli pepper in one flower bed but it doesn’t work for long. They keep crapping in the middle of the grass regardless.

I know it isn’t fox crap as that smells and looks different.

I know cats just don’t crap in their own gardens so how is it ok that the owners know that and just shrug?

It is such a huge imposition on your neighbours.

Cat owners are very selfish when it comes to their cats, and use the ‘right to roam’ as an excuse to take very little responsibility.

They could cat proof their own properties to prevent their chosen pet bothering other people but they don’t.

They could ensure that their cat wears a bell to help prevent them killing wildlife but they don’t. They have extra excuses for that one too.

They could offer to provide their neighbours with various deterrents when they choose to let their cats roam but they don’t.

Selfish, inconsiderate fuckers the lot of them.

YANBU.

^ This, exactly.

New neighbour moved in with a cat, cat started using our garden as a toilet. Neighbour v apologetic and suggested a " super soaker" water pistol, which they paid for.
Cat soon got the message...everyone happy!

I'm just glad my two don't travel far. I'm at home a lot but when I get back if I've gone out they're usually in the garden waiting and if not they come immediately when they hear themselves being called. They are in at teatime too and aren't allowed out again.

That’s the same as my two, one of them goes out but comes back after about 20 minutes

vixen996 · 14/08/2025 18:06

Quick blast with the hose any time you see them in your garden, they should soon stop coming in

Mumandthemermaids · 14/08/2025 18:10

After the umpteenth day in a row that the multiple neighbours’ cats had dug up my veg beds and pooed all round my kids’ garden toys, I penned a poem. Think OP will approve 🤣
Cat shit
Now, I don’t own a cat
They’re really not my thing
Cat shit brings diseases
And makes an awful stink
So when I’m in my garden
Trying to enjoy the sun
And spot a stinky cat turd
It really isn’t fun
I don’t have cats for a reason
I don’t want to deal with shit
Yet every morning I go out
And pick up loads of it
If I had a faithful dog
And let it roam out and free
Would you like it very much
If it shat by your conservatory?
No, of course you wouldn’t,
Cos dog shit causes uproar
But where is all the angry noise
When a cat shits outside my door?

Emmz1510 · 14/08/2025 18:10

Soak them with a super soaker a few times. A really powerful one. Hopefully that will put them off

Wibblywobs · 14/08/2025 18:33

I have found realistic rubber snakes that i periodically move around and a water activated sprinkler work a treat.

WellIquitelikesprouts · 14/08/2025 19:34

My cats use my garden. You could ask the neighbours to make a suitable place in their own garden. Loose bare earth or sand is popular.

No one owns a cat, the cats own you. So long as it is peaceful and does not harm them, try one of the tips others have given.

Yep agree. The shitting is disgusting. No other pet is allowed to do this on other property. I wish catio’s to keep them in their own gardens were mandatory.

Do rubber snakes really work? I think that’s a fair compromise. Have you ever worried there may be a real one hiding in plain sight or do you count them 😂

Cat owners are like parents of a new baby who have a staff member who appears whenever the nappy needs changing and changes it for the parents. Why would you ever fire people who clean up s* for you?

The thing that worked for us was a motion sensor attached to a hose pipe. Even if the water missed the noise of the spray was enough to scare them off. As we had cameras we could see where they were entering the garden and their little saunter across the grass so aimed it at where they came in.

Word of advice, don't forget you have a cat motion sensor, scared myself to death and got soaked in the process.

So many cat-haters replying. Cats are naturally clean animals who bury their poo. All these people saying cats poo on their lawn - far more likely to be fox mess.

Oh no they absolutely don’t!

I’m entirely unsure as to what the point of a pet cat is.

The don't bury their shit on my allotment. It just sits on top of the soil.

I'm glad really because it's easy to spot so I can remove rather than unfortunately "discovering" buried poo.

Absolute rubbish, a myth spread by cat owners to kid themselves that they are doing no wrong. I've been plagued by multiple cats over the years and I've witnessed them regularly defecating on my lawn. It's disgusting.

Pops out on every threat and on every threat many dispute it. Rightfully so. Witnesses many like that.
Apparently it's often to mark teritorry. So if you have loads, it's a compliment because cats are poorguing about your garden🙈

I don’t dislike cats or their owners but I just don’t want them to crap all the time in my garden. In fact I really like cats a lot.
But I could not justify having a pet which craps on my neighbours gardens, any more than I could justify keeping a cat indoors or having a dog who crapped on other perople’s property.
It is the ethical blind eye I find so peculiar. My sister has it. She adored her cat and just shrugged when I asked about all the places he was crapping that weren’t her garden.
All the suggestions are at my expense.
Why don’t the owners take responsibility- it is very strange to me ethically.
The only responses are from owners who are, it would appear, responsible.
Nowadays, certainly in my area, most dog owners are much more responsible then maybe decades ago.
but the cat owners are given a free pass - it is weird isn’t it?

Because cats are only semi domesticated.

They shit where they like. Just like birds and foxes. Seriously get over it. There are so many more important things to worry about.

Definitely don't use jeyes fluid op it's toxic to them and while I fully get that cats doing this is frustrating (have experienced it myself) directly harming them is out of line.

I would speak to the neighbours and explain it's an issue and say you'd like to cat proof the garden to help keep them out and ask if they'd meet you halfway with the costs. Or they cat proof 3 of their 4 perimeters and you cover your boundary line so the cat stays in their garden.

Netting over beds you don't mind covered, citronella and other citrus oils are good, also for deterring undesirable bugs, and the sonic noise deterrent is also a good option.

I used to have a cat but it was indoor only for health reasons, other cats used to come and poo in our garden and tease him and I empathise. It's extremely difficult to prevent completely though depending on your layout.

Why should WE have to pay for stuff to keep other people’s cats out? The owners should be paying for netting etc!

I’ve seen them crap, several times. It’s the cats. Our gardens are mostly all grass, no soil or veg beds here. The cats crap everywhere.

I welcome any tips on how to surgically attach a bell to my cat who has gone through 4 collars (different fastening types) and finds a way to pull it off. So much so I once found him with his jaw stuck in the collar. 🙄

So don’t let the cat out because you know it’s a risk to birds. You have less moral right to a pet than a baby bird has to life.

Such an important point but completely wasted unfortunately.
