to think supermarkets should open longer on Sundays?

By late Sunday morning my local supermarket is like a rugby scrum with trolleys. The car park is jammed, people are queueing before they even get inside, and once you are in the aisles it feels like an obstacle course just to reach the milk. It is easily the busiest day of the week here, yet we still have the six hour Sunday trading limit.

Because of Sunday trading laws, the big shops in England and Wales can only open for six hours. In practice that means everyone piles in at the same time. Late morning is rammed, early afternoon is even worse, and by the afternoon the place looks like a plague of locusts has been through, with only artichokes and beetroot left.

In Scotland there are no Sunday trading laws for large shops, so they can open as long as they like, and life seems to carry on perfectly fine.

If supermarkets here could open longer, like on a normal day, people could spread out their shopping and the whole thing would be calmer. Families who spend Saturday at kids sports or activities, and workers who do shifts at the weekend, would have more choice than the current six hour window. Smaller express or local stores are open all day anyway, but they are pricier and do not stock everything, so you end up doing several little shops.

I know the main argument for the current rules is that Sundays should be for people to spend time with their families. But not everyone lives in a family setup, and many people, especially students, part timers, and those looking for extra income, actually prefer to work on Sundays. For some, it is the best day to pick up extra hours without clashing with other commitments.

I just do not see how the current system helps when Sundays are already the busiest.

I like to see DD when she gets home for sunday lunch!

There’s more to life than work.

Who is forcing you to work? Supermarket jobs are voluntary.

SwanFlight · 13/08/2025 18:59

All or nothing. There should be no driving on Sunday, apart from essential workers, and granny lifts.

hattie43 · 13/08/2025 19:02

I’d like them to open earlier and close earlier , say 9am to 2pm

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/08/2025 19:02

I agree but we’re well ahead of lots of European countries where all shops are closed completely on Sundays

Snorlaxo · 13/08/2025 19:02

Sunday trading laws are bullshit. Night shift will still be stocking shelves, delivery drivers transporting packaging and many in other industries like hospitality and emergency services working like normal.

I actually think they should close entirely on Sundays. There’s something sort of magical and sleepy on a Sunday in France when everything is closed (but really frustrating when it’s a Wednesday afternoon) and I think it does impact pace of life in a positive way.

When I moved to Finland shops (apart from little corner shops) were shut on Sundays, and shut at 6pm on Saturdays. It wasn't magical and sleepy, it was just really annoying. And shut for all public holidays too, fine for Easter and Christmas but Ascension Day always took me by surprise and I'd usually really need something and be unable to get it.

Is there a lack of supermarkets where you live OP? I have never experienced anything like you describe.

I would find it useful if they opened earlier.

When I lived in France I adapted very quickly (as it’s not actually that hard to live one day not buying anything when you know it’s going to happen every week).

I’ll concede that the Wednesday afternoon closures often caught my by surprise and were annoying though.

Yanbu, only because I'm from Ireland (where supermarkets have pretty much normal opening hours on a Sunday) but have lived in England for 15 years and DH still can't get his head around the fact that they close at 4pm here. I have to remind him at least twice a month. It drives me mad.

I adapted of course, but I didn't like it. Nor did most other people, which is why they changed the law and relaxed opening hours restrictions bit by bit until there's basically no restrictions now except for the hours you're allowed to buy booze (only 9-9 even if the shop is open earlier/later)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 14/08/2025 09:01

I work in a supermarket and customers are queuing round the block at 10am when we open on Sundays and management have to almost scoop people out of the aisles at 4 when we close. So I think extending the hours would stop some of this psychological nonsense which drives people to shop more simply because they know the hours are more restricted and they fear running out of Fosters or barbecue charcoal.

We are open 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and we STILL get people dashing in last minute! So I'm not sure you can ever be open long enough, until less you open 24 hours (which we can't do because we're too small a shop).

But yes, Sunday trading laws are outdated. Too many people HAVE to shop at weekends, so shops should be open longer. And I say that as someone who works in one.

Onelifeonly · 14/08/2025 09:07

Where I live, although Sunday hours for the big supermarkets are as you describe, we have mini versions of e.g Tescos as well as "corner" shops that are open till late evening on Sundays. You can't get everything in them, of course, but I get deliveries for my main shop and top up in person as needed. Plus shopping on a Sunday evening isn't usually one of my priorities.

They could close all day Sunday for me. How lovely to have a day with no shops open. Cannot understand why folk can’t manage their shopping within all the other hours that shops are open.

Have you ever had to work two jobs due to being poor? I used to work 8-5 in a shop, I then worked 5:30-10:30 in the local co-op and did the saturday shift 7-8 in a ready meal factory. Sunday was the only time I could do any shopping as everything else was shut when I finished work.

Has anyone ever heard of online shopping?

I need fresh groceries for the week so Sunday is the ideal day to do this - unfortunately I then have to basically dedicate half of my day to going to Sainsbury’s as the opening hours are so short and it’s so busy. Don’t have time on Monday due to work and I’m often too exhausted afterwards to do the big shop.

Nobody has to dedicate half their day to going to Sainsbury's.
Stop being so dramatic.

Ahead? Why is opening on Sunday ahead?

I think they should close on Sundays like most countries and have a more family focused day.

Agree. So much more convenient. Also much better than it used to be. Use by dates are fine and any subs I get are normally absolutely fine.

Half your day, really?!

100%, we'd all be a lot happier if we could have a day a week where we weren't all charging about, there are 6.5 days to shop, with SM's open until 10pm.

A compromise would be 8 to 12 on a sunday.

Hoardasauruskaren · 14/08/2025 09:22

I’m old enough (just) to remember when everything was closed on Sundays! No supermarkets opened & corner shops would close early afternoon. The ice cream van was your only option for buying anything! Alcohol was only sold in pubs too! Our local swimming pool shut at 1pm too. Public transport was reduced. It was very monotonous as a child/ teen but in some ways it was better as people relaxed more & spent the time with family.

I’m in Scotland & Sunday is just like any other day now!

ouch321 · 14/08/2025 09:31

You are right of course. Bloody annoying when Sunday is your only day off work which was once the case for me.

And as a retail worker I was really annoyed that my earning power was limited to a few hours on a Sunday.

But the arrogant people that reside on this forum always think that because they have the time to do a leisurely shop at noon on a Tuesday after pilates everyone else's life must be like that and retail workers don't know their own minds and need strangers on the Internet to decide what's best for them.

BoudiccaRuled · 14/08/2025 09:32

I recently lived in a country where shops stayed closed on Sunday, it was so relaxing.
Appreciate that ship has sailed in the UK though.

Don’t do your shopping in a sunday
the longer the opening hours the more your shopping will cost

ls it possible that it’s the only day she has available to?
