To wonder why shoplifters are so thick and selfish?

Pharmacies have today revealed they are suffering from increased shoplifting too.
Where us this all going to end

If people keep stealing there won't be any ships left will there?
Have they ever tried running a business?
What would they do if people kept stealing?
How low as well stealing from an independent pharmacy. It's hard enough for them as it is.

They are there for people in the community as well to help them?
Makes no sense.
People are thick and selfish.
Are they trying to ose everyone down?

🙄😪

I don't think shoplifters steal out of desperation. If a mother can't afford formula, for example, I doubt any GP would send her away if she begged for it. Shoplifters steal out of entitlement.

Can you imagine the shame someone would feel having to beg for formula?

Can you imagine that shoplifting and hoping you’re not caught might save some of that shame?

Youre on your own
Your family have bullied you and treated you like shit. Your kids dad is gone. No friends.
Youre down to your last few pounds. And your baby suddenly gets a fever

Are you really thick and selfish for stealing some calpol, which costs over £3?

Imo, no

Edit - ive been in this situation but have never stolen. But I've been so broke i might have had to. Thankfully things are a little better now.

Edited

There are ways of doing things that don’t involve being a scumbag though. In that case, you’d go to the GP and explain the situation and ask for help, not risk shoplifting and having to leave your sick baby while you get into a confrontation with shop staff / arrested surely. People don’t help themselves.

Can you imagine the shame of being caught shoplifting and getting a criminal record and diminishing your own / your child’s chances in life though.

OonaStubbs · 12/08/2025 20:30

Shoplifting is a scourge and it needs to be cracked down upon. Shoplifters should always be punished to the full extent of the law, and large thefts and repeat offenders should always go to jail.

You would surely feel more shame being convicted of shoplifting
And potentially all your friends and family finding out🤔

I work in a cafe attached to a supermarket, the amount of people that shoplifter is astounding. We see security trying to stop certain people who are repeat offenders but the police won't do anything if the amount is under 200 quid..
Have had people come in the cafe and grab drinks and food out of the chiller and run,and the charity box too, we had a manager chase after the before but I've said straight up I'm not doing that, I'm not risking my life to stop
someone stealing.

How much time have you spent working with acquisitive crime? I'm not endorsing or excusing it, but I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about.

😂 Shoplifting/ Stealing isn't on the rise then?

People aren't stealing out of desperation? With the price of food and essentials? Really??

Yes really
I live on a council estate sometimes people knock on the door trying to sell stuff they have stolen people steal to order
So if somone steal s a leg of lamb which retails at say £15/£20 lots of people would buy it off a shoplifter for a fiver

Dh sees this often when he's at the pub, there's a man who has something different every week. A few weeks ago it was different meats. I find that so disgusting on so many levels, not just the blatant shoplifting, but also its not like he's storing it properly so can't understand how people will risk food poisoning for some cheap meat.

lljkk · 12/08/2025 20:53

If you were stealing because of "high price of food", would you nick energy drinks and bags of crisps? Coz that's what my adult son saw a gal shoplifter putting in her bag. Are energy drinks essential foodstuffs now?

Neah, she was just hungry and knew a way to avoid paying. She even said "sorry" before pushing DS out of her way to exit. She's long banned from the shop where DS works but hard to stop her if he's serving behind till when she enters.

That literally won’t be why they thieved the stock. They steal because they sell stuff on mainly.

yep and I'm sure calpol is exactly the main thing being stolen 🙄

I'm sure you think that the reason baby formula is one of the most commonly stolen items is because of poor mums who otherwise can't afford to feel their child as well....

Absolutely no excuse to steal. By using emotive context like stealing calpol for your baby fgs - you can get calpol on perscription free of charge for your child. No justification for being a thief, and I hope if you have children you’re not repeating this mantra to them.

why do people on mums net think GPs have the answers to everything?! They can barely see the amount of patients they need to let alone people coming in because they are skint.

People getting so get about X stealing a kitkat but not about Nestle stealing water and land from the indigenous people where they grow crops or giving out formula to new mothers saying it’s much better for babies, free until the mothers own supply dries up then charge unobtainable amounts therefore causing the starvation of babies.

All the large supermarkets ripping off British and Foreign farmers while the CEO makes obscene amounts of money.

i can’t fathom the energy to be mad at Sandra at number 5 for shoving a Swiss roll and some black pudding in her bag

Tbh wether he's serving on the till or not he doesn't get paid enough to try and stop shoplifters .

Agree. I think prison sentences need to be given out to deter it. More often than not, shoplifters just get a caution and slapped wrist. Let’s see how many would do it if they got a mandatory prison sentence of six months.

Today’s news story isn’t referring to the type of people you have described. It’s organised crime - sold on to corner shops, boot fairs, abroad. Same with retail stores. It’s massive criminal activity linked to huge gangs.

Would Sandra like it it she was running a business and people did that to her?
Things are not free, the shop have had to pay for it. This is what I mean about being thick.

When all the pharmacy's close because they can't make a living where will everyone go there?

The pub shouldn't let him.

The pub landlord will likely shout "Oi you....out" and the seller will leave.
Then people leave the pub go outside to the pavement to purchase the cheap meat or whatever and then go back in the pub.
The landlord will roll his eyes and tomorrow the same thing will happen again.

Coconutter24 · 12/08/2025 21:16

Qashgal · 12/08/2025 19:16

My friend works in a large food stop and they get so many shoplifters every day that they have a well practiced routine for not letting them leave with the goods if at all possible. They run an informal game if who has saved the most money per 'catch'. The total often runs into hundreds of pounds in one trolley . This is not a poor mother with no help. This is to feed drugs habits pure and simple . Most of the shoplifters are well known to the police - some are stupid enough to reoffend while out on license. The staff have been known to turn a blind eye if its a person taking a single item of food such as bread milk etc. They are only human and see the amount of wastage that get written off due to sell by dates and broken packaging that they arent allowed to even give away.

All fun and games until one of the shop lifters physically assaults one of the players or stabs them!

Bambamhoohoo · 12/08/2025 21:18

Addiction they steal for drugs usually.

I don’t see the point in calling them selfish or thick. What does wondering that benefit anyone?

FurierTransform · 12/08/2025 21:19

I wouldn't say thick and selfish.

For some people it's essential to their existence, and they need our help.

For others they just don't care about the consequences, so we need to show them i.e punitive punishments -lock them up.

And for some it's a business, and they need permanently removing from society.
