Was IBU for walking out of shop at checkout?

I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

If it was click and collect, wouldn’t they have your email address in their system anyway?

You're only the 57th person to mention this. And OP has explained.

YANBU. How ridiculous. Not everyone has an email address…

Who doesn't have an email address...?

Who doesn't have an email address...?

I have several clients in their 80s who don't.

My best friend and her husband don’t have email addresses. I’ve come across other people who don’t as well.

Really? How do they do any work? Are they not employed?
Do they never book anything online ever?

Well that's not a reason.

My mother is 86 and has 3 different email addresses.

You didn't ask for a reason. You asked who hadn't got an email address. Of the people I know who don't have an email address, they are all in their 80s. I wasn't suggesting EVERYONE in their 80s doesn't have an email address.

JackJarvisEsq · 12/08/2025 20:13

I have an email that’s just receiptsjjarvis@bla which totally threw the cashier in new look (she couldn’t spell receipts) so she just churned out a paper one

No one is saying they cant ask a customer for their email if their manager has asked them too, but they shouldn’t be standing there out right lying to people, saying they can’t provide a paper receipt when they know full well they can. That is on the shop assistant and they can absolutely control that behaviour.

And why would a shop assistant do that? What do they gain? They have been told to insist. Do you really think shop assistants making not much more than minimum wage stand around thinking of ways to annoy customers?

iamnotalemon · 12/08/2025 20:37

So did you leave the shop empty handed? Seems a little bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face 🤷‍♀️

SirBasil · 12/08/2025 20:49

BusWankers · 12/08/2025 19:42

Well that's not a reason.

and my mum was perfectly fine with email and online until suddenly she wasn'T

We need to keep on at government and companies to prevent this becoming the norm. There must always be an analogue solution, just in case, anyway.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 12/08/2025 21:09

Surely if they were trying to send you a receipt you’d already paid? So then you stormed out.. without the stuff? With the stuff but no receipt?

Edited

They’ve both recently retired so not particularly elderly by any means. And no, neither of them has ever ordered anything online. My friend’s daughter has bought her an occasional thing on Amazon but that’s all. She’s never had a credit or debit card either, although I think her husband has a debit card. She pays for everything in cash. I can’t imagine not using cards but it seems to work fine for them.

Laiste · 13/08/2025 06:39

God this thread has bought out the idiots hasnt it 🙄

IDontHateRainbows · 13/08/2025 06:42

It's not very 'embracing diversity ' is it. My mum is electronically illiterate, never had an email, can't even use a smart phone, but always asks for a receipt. What would they do with her?

Tollington · 13/08/2025 06:54

I say that I don’t have an email

AliciaLeeming · 13/08/2025 13:06

Bromptotoo · 12/08/2025 16:31

I've never heard of any store needing my email.

I was foolish enough to give it to Halfords once and was then carpet bombed with marketing emails.

Halfords once demanded my full postal address to sell me a sat nav ( when they were new fangled things).

I refused and the assistant told me he couldn't sell it to me without the details. That was quite the stand-off. The store manager came eventually and very reluctantly "approved" the sale.

I never ever give my personal details instore. That includes my email address.

Laura95167 · 13/08/2025 18:02

What happens if someone doesnt have email

fetchacloth · 13/08/2025 18:28

Venalopolos · 12/08/2025 12:30

Dunelm always give me a paper receipt without argument when I ask.

Agreed, I always tell them that I already receive emails so I don't supply my email address again.
Unless the purchase is online, I would expect and insist on a receipt, even if it meant speaking to a manager to make it happen.

Beachhutgirl · 13/08/2025 18:32

I was told in one store that they could not process a cash refund (£5 for a faulty item) without my email address. Reluctantly I gave it, but threatened to complain if I got any marketing emails.

This worked, in that store they can opt you out of further contact.

YouCantHandleTheRuth · 13/08/2025 18:37

Create an email address just for occasions such as this ... something along the lines of "[email protected]" ....

.... or stronger!

Bernardo1 · 13/08/2025 18:39

I think you make a good point about how you can accumulate spam email. So why didn't you give husbands email as he ordered it.

Pelsall116 · 13/08/2025 19:03

So how does anyone go on who doesn't have an email address? Not everyone does

Airspice · 13/08/2025 19:06

I had the same in New Look the other day, I said ‘no I’ll have a paper receipt please’, to which the lady replied ‘we don’t do them anymore’, I refused to give her my email and said I didn’t want to be bombarded with junk mail. She said they don’t send any but I just told her I wouldn’t bother with a receipt and walked out. I think it’s wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️
