How usual is it to have Dominos once a week?

Aibu to think this isn't very healthy for a child/teenager? A medium pizza to themselves every single week without fail.

Or am I being judgy? Is this quite common and not a big deal?

I won't give my opinion unless asked but I don't think it's a great message to give to a young person that this is a good routine to carry on, surely would be better to have it fortnightly at least or a smaller pizza 🤔

Depends on the rest of their diet.

Didnotnailit · 11/08/2025 21:34

My teen could eat a medium. He’s thin as a take and does a tonne of sport. If the rest of the diet is ok i see no issues

Liliwen · 11/08/2025 21:34

My teen would demolish a medium pizza, no bother. I wouldn’t mind if he had one once a week really if he ate healthily in general. It would more be the cost that would bother me- Dominos isn’t cheap

WTDress · 11/08/2025 21:35

I wouldn’t because dominos is expensive and not very nice pizza. My kids have frozen pizza once a week though. It’s bread and vegetables and cheese. Not the end of the world.

bennybannsider · 11/08/2025 21:35

Yes it would be better to have this meal less often.

Also yes it's quite common to have a takeaway every week and for it to be the same takeaway and same meal every week.

casualcrispenjoyer · 11/08/2025 21:35

You haven’t said the age of the child so no idea

a 6 year old- objectively not the best but I honestly wouldn’t care enough to start a mumsnet thread on it

12 year old- there are nicer weekly takeaways to have, but nah, not an issue if the rest of the diet is fine

Notsuchafattynow · 11/08/2025 21:36

Very expensive. But not much different to fish and chips each week?

12purplepencils · 11/08/2025 21:37

Rest of diet not too bad I think, quite limited variety though, hard to get him to try new things and does snack a bit on unhealthy stuff.
He is overweight and sometimes worries about it.

Oh the irony 😂

mumofoneAloneandwell · 11/08/2025 21:37

I think its fine, although expensive x

I meant... I won't give my opinion to the person whose child it is! I'm obviously giving it here 😆

Unless it is your child and you are asking "is this a good thing to do"? Who cares. Kid will be happy and fed (probably fat but meh).

You think dominos is just bread, cheese and vegetables? Really? It’s smothered in saturated fat, it’s awfully unhealthy and weekly consumption isn’t good for anyone, whether they’re 15 or 50, fat or thin.

A frozen pizza will be infinitely less unhealthy than dominoes (not to say frozen pizzas are healthy, just more so).

I actually think it's a great message to help build healthy relationship with food to understand that no food simply good or bad, but that in the context of other meals which are balanced and nutritionally dense and varied, pizza can and should be enjoyed regularly. Children shouldn't be taught calorie counting and food restriction are healthy.

Jellycatspyjamas · 11/08/2025 21:40

My young teenagers could both eat a medium dominoes without to much trouble. One meal out of 21 isn’t something I’d worry about unless the other meals were also crap.

It's this that's the problematic part, not necessarily the weekly Domino's. As others have said, a weekly takeaway for an otherwise healthy, active teenager is no big deal. But if this child doesn't eat a varied diet, eats lots of unhealthy snacks, is already overweight, and eats a weekly takeaway then it's more of an issue. Not much you can do though if it's not your child.

12purplepencils · 11/08/2025 21:43

Ok thanks all, I think I am being a bit judgy.
It just makes me feel yucky when I eat because of the salt.
I'm fond of this young person (13 now but he's been doing this every week since at least 10yo). Child of my boyf/partner, no mum on the scene.
Makes me sad when he's down about his weight and they're talking about how to make meals healthier and I think this would be the most effective and easiest thing to change! But it's not up to me and it's an important routine to them so I will 🤐

It’s a waste of money sure but a pizza once a week isn’t on the extreme end of child abuse.

Maybe chuck a £2 pizza in the trolley at Tesco rather than wasting £15+ a week on ordering or even better make them yourself.

Londonrach1 · 11/08/2025 21:46

No....at 50 I've had it once and tbh it tasted awful. Can't imagine anyone buying it more than once. Pizza from a supermarket is better and cheaper.

whoboo · 11/08/2025 21:47

Aww bless, if it's a routine and he enjoys, tough. My 15yo is very finicky with food, it's hard trying to introduce acceptable variety.

lljkk · 11/08/2025 21:49

I just can't worry about this... My son had F&Chips daily when he worked for the chippy.

Boredteen · 11/08/2025 21:56

Isn’t it more that dominoes is expensive - you could get much nicer food- doesn’t actually fill you up, wierdly, and is full of crap? Dominoes actually makes my teen ( and his mate) feel crap. Think it must have msg or something in . Give s me headaches and bloating, ick.

mindutopia · 11/08/2025 21:59

Pizza once a week is fine. It’s just cheese and tomato on toast, but stupidly expensive if a takeaway. And a whole pizza is an awful lot of food. I can make one last 2-3 meals.

An actual Dominoes once a week sounds excessive because it’s quite expensive. I wouldn’t pay £10 (if you get the deal) or £17 (if you don’t) for one child’s meal every week.

I get Dominoes maybe 4 times a year (it’s my post hospital scan fasting treat 😂), but my dc have it once a year at most.

Doitrightnow · 11/08/2025 22:04

The obvious solution seems to be to suggest buying a healthier, cheaper and less calorific pizza (Costa and Mollica or something). Takes minutes to cook and can still be a nice weekly event. Or even make one together occasionally, this base is quite easy

Pretty sure that was me for three years at uni.
