How usual is it to have Dominos once a week?

Aibu to think this isn't very healthy for a child/teenager? A medium pizza to themselves every single week without fail.

Or am I being judgy? Is this quite common and not a big deal?

I won't give my opinion unless asked but I don't think it's a great message to give to a young person that this is a good routine to carry on, surely would be better to have it fortnightly at least or a smaller pizza 🤔

Depends on the rest of their diet.

Every week? Surely not. 😳

I actually think it's a great message to help build healthy relationship with food to understand that no food simply good or bad, but that in the context of other meals which are balanced and nutritionally dense and varied, pizza can and should be enjoyed regularly. Children shouldn't be taught calorie counting and food restriction are healthy.

So why would that include a takeaway dominoes pizza on a WEEKLY basis?

you don’t have to calorie count!
it’s not like it’s it’s the cheapest either!

SoftPillow · 11/08/2025 22:09

It wouldn’t be fine for us. My DS could eat a medium dominos by himself, but would I let him do that weekly, of course not.

It’s junk, it’s shit pizza, it’s expensive, it’s unhealthy. Absolutely no way would
we have a dominos, or any take away, weekly.

Bambamhoohoo · 11/08/2025 22:09

It’s one meal in 21 over the week, it’s not going to do a thing to their health, wellbeing or weight, especially a young person

bit boring, but not uncommon. I think you’re being judgey mainly because it’s really weird to have an opinion on what an other adult eats. Do you suffer with disordered eating?

Jellywobbles2 · 11/08/2025 22:11

Many people order several times a week. It’s the road to obesity imo

CerealForDinnerAgain · 11/08/2025 22:11

I’m surprised that people are saying it’s expensive. Here in the US Dominos is $6.99 for any size pizza. That’s cheaper than many other fast-food options.

chipsaway · 11/08/2025 22:12

I’m a bit shocked at some of these responses. Weekly dominoes since aged 10?
oh I’m also thinking re the expense of this.
I wonder if the parent has worked out the yearly cost of this?
maybe it’s just me. I grew up in the 80’s when a takeaway was every 6 months and we felt rich lol.

gingercat02 · 11/08/2025 22:13

We have takeaway of some sort every Friday. Overall not terrible if the rest of the diet is good. It could be chinese, Indian, pizza, whatever so not the same every week

It’s not really expensive. The constant reference to cost is pearl clutching or puritanicalism (should that actually be a word lol) to add to the judgement

casualcrispenjoyer · 11/08/2025 21:35

You haven’t said the age of the child so no idea

a 6 year old- objectively not the best but I honestly wouldn’t care enough to start a mumsnet thread on it

12 year old- there are nicer weekly takeaways to have, but nah, not an issue if the rest of the diet is fine

Come.on it's not healthy for an adult or a toddler. It's not the worse but it isn't great.

WTDress · 11/08/2025 21:35

I wouldn’t because dominos is expensive and not very nice pizza. My kids have frozen pizza once a week though. It’s bread and vegetables and cheese. Not the end of the world.

It's revolting. Seriously unpleasant. And I am a fan of pizza.

Ok thanks all, I think I am being a bit judgy.
It just makes me feel yucky when I eat because of the salt.
I'm fond of this young person (13 now but he's been doing this every week since at least 10yo). Child of my boyf/partner, no mum on the scene.
Makes me sad when he's down about his weight and they're talking about how to make meals healthier and I think this would be the most effective and easiest thing to change! But it's not up to me and it's an important routine to them so I will 🤐

If the rest of his diet is poor changing one meal a week isn’t going to make a difference. Instead I’d look for smaller changes throughout the week.

Domino’s in the UK is much, much more expensive and far, far worse, than a pizza from an Italian place with a proper pizza oven. Even though their pricing model is a discount driven one you’re still probably paying the equivalent of $20/$25 for a medium sized one, delivered. Although there’s probably a ‘two for one’ offer on collection! But then Domino’s isn’t really pizza as an Italian would recognise it…

ScrambledEggs12 · 11/08/2025 22:19

I make our pizza, base is really quick and easy (flour, yeast, salt, sugar, water, oil), add what we want on it. One large pizza can do four of us if I do chips and salad. Not the healthiest dinner but much cheaper, tastier and healthier than Dominos I'd have thought. Takes about 10 minutes to prep (not including half an hour for resting/rising) and 20 minutes to cook.

LazySunbedDays · 11/08/2025 22:19

If it was a proper take away pizza I would say no problem, but dominoes is just nasty!

Why don't you drop into conversation when they're down about their weight that they could start by not having weekly Domino's, point out how many calories and grams of fat are in each one. They maybe have no idea how unhealthy it is.

Then suggest just one per month. Perhaps show them how to make pizza from scratch, you could make the dough together, make the sauce from scratch, could be a fun bonding activity and teaching about healthier food choices.

Never eaten a Dominos in my life, they smell wrank.

ScrambledEggs12 · 11/08/2025 22:20

We do get takeaways, but never pizza as all of us prefer the homemade.

Bambamhoohoo · 11/08/2025 22:21

It doesn’t matter if we think dominos is disgusting. The person eating it obviously likes it. I have no idea why people think that is useful information

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 11/08/2025 22:22

2 large pizzas for four in this house and sometimes slices are left for lunch the next day

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 11/08/2025 22:23

Omg i love Dominos, id have it every week but its expensive and bad for me!

The mac n cheese tho 🤤

FortheloveofCheesus · 11/08/2025 22:26

Those types of takeaway pizzas are just so full of crap. Oily, processed. I've tried to raise my kids to prefer the food that makes your body feel good.

Nothing wrong with homemade sourdough pizza though... fresh tomato, basil, mozzarella, maybe some chicken & red onion....

Anon501178 · 11/08/2025 22:27

Don't see the issue. My 8&3yo have half a medium pizza each every Saturday night!

So whole one for a teen once a week doesn't seem crazy.

BeavisMcTavish · 11/08/2025 22:27

So this is actually really easy..

medium mighty meaty dominoes - 1860 calories. Insane, and that’s before he has the included garlic dip that’ll send it well beyond 2000 and before lunch and brekkie.

Switch to Italian crust, small Hawaiian and it’s 725 plus extras.

long story short, you don’t have to cut treats out to lose weight - pizzas and curry are perfectly accessible to people on diets.

It's better to concentrate on regular exercise/sports at this age. Then make tweakments, but if the pizza is part of a special night together, it doesn't have to go.
