To think this was gross?! Toddler public toileting.

I was in a playground area today. A mum was there with a toddler aged 2/3, used a portable potty for a poop. The mum proceeded to thoroughly wipe them in full view of whoever was there and passing by.
AIBU to think this was just too much and she should have gone to the toilets? (Which were quite literally 20 seconds around the corner)

A quick wee in a portable potty maybe, but not this?!

💩 🤮

Jackiepumpkinhead · 11/08/2025 17:58

Gross! You’ll probably get flamed as anything to do with toddlers, is cute and adorable. Even their shit.

FluffyWabbit · 11/08/2025 17:58

The expectation of decorum is never unreasonable.

Allswellthatendswelll · 11/08/2025 17:59

Hmmmm gross but maybe they were still potty training and couldn't make it in time? Maybe she was expecting a wee?

wildoceann · 11/08/2025 18:01

Yeah maybe an accident but at least try and go in a corner/behind a tree/out of the way for the clean up process!

I'm currently 1.5 weeks into potty training. Poo is happening right then and there, she isn't giving me any warning. However with a toilet 20 secs away, I would go there obviously! We got caught at a park with no toilet the other day. I used the buggy, me and my 6 year old to create a but of privacy behind a bush... not ideal but I wouldn't just do it for everyone to see!

Mumofoneandone · 11/08/2025 18:06

Should always be discreet with children toileting away from toilets. This is for their privacy/protection and consideration for everyone else.

Campingisnexttogodliness · 11/08/2025 18:08

I have potty trained 11 dc.. Never took a potty out the house . Never changed a nappy in a cafe /restaurant /shop..
It simply isn't necessary..

UnderCoverB0ss · 11/08/2025 18:10

You’ve gotta go when you’ve gotta go! And sometimes a wee becomes an oh no I need a poo. But mum could have been discreet about the wiping etc.

B0D · 11/08/2025 18:10

@Campingisnexttogodliness
only one here but my experience was the same

Littleredgoat · 11/08/2025 18:12

Gross. I'll never get over the mum who took her little boy into the bushes at a national trust house for a crap- 20 yards from the loos. Needless to say she didn't bag it and bin it. Those poor gardening staff.

Cutleryclaire · 11/08/2025 18:16

I wouldn’t give a shit about it. Pun intended.

Potty training is short lived but grim. I’ve been caught out in a much worse situation with a surprise poo. Luckily the people nearby were lovely but I was absolutely mortified.

If they can’t hold it they aren’t ready for potty training!!! Soo many parents are desperate to potty train their children far too early before they are ready nowadays

Pinklemonade37 · 11/08/2025 18:26

Accidents happen but I’d 100% run to the loo’s. Some people will disagree with me but I really dislike the fact some parents don’t treat their toddlers with the private moments that they deserve would be mortified about as an adult.

I think it’s wrong to get your child’s bits out in public for all to see.

Accidents do happen to be fair, it is almost impossible for a child to be ready and never have an accident,

Omg this is like the opposite of the opinion of 99% of mumsnet who think modern parents are feckless and lazy for not training at 20 months or something!! Lol.

Tbh what do I know as I trained at over 3 so we never really bothered with portable potties. Had some accidents though out and about. I agree the wiping in public is a bit gross when the loos were so near.

Well it's called training for a reason, it takes time and accidents are normal.

GleisZwei · 11/08/2025 18:51

Disgusting when the loos were so close.

QuantumPanic · 11/08/2025 18:55

I saw a dad help his toddler use a portable potty in the playground. The dad then emptied it over the railings into the river that runs alongside the park. Public toilets were also about 20m away. 🤷

crossedlines · 11/08/2025 18:56

Not very dignified for the poor toddler

MyDeftHedgehog · 11/08/2025 18:59

I had a friend who would pull he sons pants down and let him take a dump at the roadside. Didn't bother wiping his arse. I only went out with her once 🤢

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/08/2025 19:00

Surely this depends on how many children this person has? If a child slips and falls and Mum isn't to be found she is considered neglectful. That includes if she is in a queue for the toilets or in the toilet. If you think a child who does not need to go will abandon their game immediately at first call because their sibling needs to go again, then you've never had more than one child. It's sometimes a difficult decision with no right answer.

I think children are different - one of mine would regularly give me zero warning of the need to go for YEARS after potty training.

Honestly you would get more notice of an incoming ballistic missile.

This led to us waddling to the nearest toilet with a poo in his pants on numerous occasions as well as some unfortunate alfresco poos in bushes when we were far from any toilet - I did get used to carrying around poop bags as if I had a dog!

Burntt · 11/08/2025 19:17

too many people assuming this mum has just one child. If I’m alone with my toddler I’d take him to the toilet, if it’s him and his sister I’d trust her to wait for me to return or she would come with me. If I have me other child there is no chance he would stop playing promptly and come to the toilet and he cannot be left alone. If I couldn’t change toddler in public then I could not take my children out of the house
