To not want neighbours cats in my garden?

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 14:46

Our neighbour has cats and they keep coming into our garden. They have also made their way into our house several times through the window and back door. I’m currently pregnant and have two young children. The children get upset when they come in as they don’t understand why they come and go (they want them to stay to play with). We have a lot of songbirds birds that sit in a bush in our garden and the cats are constantly trying to hunt the birds.

The cats are also doing the toilet in the garden which my husband has to clean with a hose. I believe it’s not entirely safe to clean up cat mess when pregnant.

I spoke to the neighbour and asked if they could stop the cats coming into my house and garden. They said there is nothing that can be done.

Is it unreasonable that this is bothering me?

So you want mass abandonment and mass cull of all cats? That's highly disgusting! I adopt rescues! Do you want them all dead? Fuck me your mindset is beyond help! Thing is that cat rescues take strays and ferals of the street, they get neutered and become pets that like mine barely leave our property, you want people to stop owning cats, that means the rescues can no longer take them off the street if they can't home them, if they can't take them off the street and you would just have lots of roaming strays and ferals that breed like hell and kill wildlife to survive. Your comment is pretty silly isn't it?

Do you object to killing rats or mice? For some people, cats are no different. They are a pest that I don't want in my garden. And I don't consider them as native wildlife. PTS of these unwanted cats is surely for the best.

I've taught my children (have 4) to throw rocks at the cats that come in our garden. It's a made a difference. It's something I wouldn't have dreamt of doing in the past but the amount of cat poo was becoming a health hazard. My sons have a good aim. Having an animal that defecates in your neighbours gardens makes you a real lowlife IMO but strangely it's normalised in the UK.

Why would you brag online about being a very unfit mother that is raising 4 kids to be violent torturers! Three kids were arrested for murdering a man today and you brag about your kids being sick, twisted little thugs? Do you think social services would let you keep your kids if they saw your posts bragging about animal torture and giving your violent child a gun to kill things with! You must be thick to think your kids have a bright future or that social services won't remove them from you when you post such dangerous posts? Who are you? Rose West? A child in our town killed a cat for fun and social media ruined their lives! Your kids would be in juvenile detention centres for animal cruelty! Wake up before you take their futures away from them.

I’ve heard pepper works, has anyone else heard of this and does it work to detract them?

I don't kill any animal, I've not got sick tendancies. I challenge you to sit euthanising cats all day when that includes kittens and pregnant mothers rather than let them go to loving homes. We love our cats to bits and they are not problematic cats but you think they should have been killed rather than had years of the loving home they've had with us!

I used to have three cats, and that seemed to attract more cats into my garden and even my house. A few times I would come home and some strange cat was walking down the stairs like the fucker owned the place. And one of my own cats walking up the stairs and almost nodding at them like "you alright, mate?".

Now I have no cats, but I have a greyhound. She is too old to care now, but a cat coming into my garden a few years back would have been toast had she caught it. Not mine or my dog's fault. Greyhound is gonna greyhound.

We do have a cat come into our garden who is a total knob. Hisses at me if I have the audacity to go within metres of it, and has launched at myself and my dog a few times. Shits in my veg patches too.
I keep meaning to get a water pistol to try and deter it.

She is completely self indulgent about her own cats so will only talk about them. Its’s all about her and her cats, any conversation won’t advance beyond that.

Apologies I thought it was you that said we have a massive stray cat crisis in the country. If that was another poster then perhaps I should aim this statement at them. But yes, I don't especially like cats and don't have a problem with PTS. And if we do have a problem, this is a better way of dealing with ot than any solution from which the end result is simply, more cats. I would happily get pest control to get rid of a wasps nest and to me all pests are equal, and especially equally unwanted.

If we leave the back door open on a hot day they also come into the house. I’m allergic to cats so I don’t want them inside. It feels unfair that we have to keep our back door shut during summer in our own secure garden because of neighbours pet choices.

I agree with you, but unfortunately there’s nothing you can legally do about it. I absolutely despise cats for this reason. I used to have to clean up cat shit and the odd dead mouse/bird most mornings. The cat that used to shit right by my drivers side car door that I’d regularly stand in only stopped when it got run over and killed. We have a dog now that has nearly caught a couple of cats, but they still come. I was thinking about getting one of those sonic repellent things but not sure if they’d be any good, or upset my dog as well.

Is that what you say to your neighbours, so casually and unconcerned? A pass agg shrug of the shoulders.

Don’t know. Don’t have any issues with my neighbours.

Oh, I guess your cat doesn’t shit in their gardens. Or they’re happy to. clean up the shit, with gritted teeth probably.

When I had cats, my neighbour (understandably) got a sonic repellent thing. it did nothing to deter the cats, but it deterred me! I could hear it and it stopped me spending time in my own garden. I can hear them in gardens when I am out walking

When a cat has come into my house, I have given it a bad time. Shouting at it, throwing things at it, chucking water at it. All you can do is try and put it off wanting to come back. I have a pet bird, so I don't want a cat wandering in and thinking it has come to a free for all chicken buffet.

You don’t? I must go back and read your posts again and familiarise myself with them then.

God, you must have good hearing! I had my suspicions they’d not be very good. I’ve had ones that are supposesd to deter insects but they did bugger all.
I might trt some lion poo instead 🤣

Tessasanderson · 11/08/2025 20:57

Got to laugh at everyone saying there is nothing you can do. Of course there a plenty of things you can do to ensure a cat never risks coming into your garden again. I remember a cat used to sit by my late fathers fish pond trying to catch them. My dad showed the cat how dangerous this was for its health. It never came back into our garden again.

You just have to show it that it’s in its best interests not to risk it

Hiptothisjive · 11/08/2025 19:35

Exactly how do you catproof a garden so they can’t get out. It isn’t being inconsiderate (and no I don’t have cats) but they can climb far higher than a six foot fence, can easily jump between things, can climb overhanging trees etc. I just think it really isn’t possible.

google and look on youtube. It is definitely possible.

You can get various repellent sprays. I am not sure how good they are as I am yet to try one. I have an issue with foxes at the moment, so something that would work on cats and foxes would be a bonus.

I do like cats and if a nice one came into my garden and didn't treat it like a toilet then I am happy to say hello and give it fuss. But the one at that comes in now is the devil and he shits everywhere and thinks he is lion.

They seem much more interested in the little birds in my garden than any rats or mice.

That’ll be because the rats and mice are staying away, knowing there are cats at large. Be grateful.

All bluetits are small.

Fledgings are even smaller. I had the tiniest of sparrows too where they’d learn to use the bird bath. Super cute and I caught a neighbours cat toying with one , it was awful.

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 21:09

We have had a development tonight where one of the top sections of fence the cat jumps on to get into our garden has now snapped. The fence is quite old and wooden however it was still intact. It just wasnt able to cope with the weight of a jumping cat. I am sure the cat will find another way in but our fence will now need repairing which DH will be delighted about.

I guess you missed the point of my post, I had a rat problem and a cat problem. The cats didn’t go for the rats, just the birds. In fact it was probably the cat food always outside that attracted the rats.

TwoWheelz · 11/08/2025 21:13

Cats are legally free to roam. If you don't want them on your land you need to take steps, it’s not down to the cat owners to restrict the cats

Yet the cat owners moan when their cat gets hit by a car. They blame drivers for going too fast or something. Cats have no road sense and I swear, wait for a car to come before they cross.
And they will blame dog owners that have killed a cat that has gone into their garden.

Like I said in a PP, I had 3 cats. I live in a terraced house, so they were not going out in the road.

If you don't want people to shoot water pistols at your cat, or have their dog maul them, or get run over, then keep them on your property. Catios are a things.
