To not want neighbours cats in my garden?

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 14:46

Our neighbour has cats and they keep coming into our garden. They have also made their way into our house several times through the window and back door. I’m currently pregnant and have two young children. The children get upset when they come in as they don’t understand why they come and go (they want them to stay to play with). We have a lot of songbirds birds that sit in a bush in our garden and the cats are constantly trying to hunt the birds.

The cats are also doing the toilet in the garden which my husband has to clean with a hose. I believe it’s not entirely safe to clean up cat mess when pregnant.

I spoke to the neighbour and asked if they could stop the cats coming into my house and garden. They said there is nothing that can be done.

Is it unreasonable that this is bothering me?

If you have a fence out Pidgin spikes on it, you can get them from Amazon

Your husband should spray water at the cat, not next to it, and I would be bagging up and throwing the cat waste over the fence for the neighbour to sort

I would also put in as many cat repellant plants as I can

As to the back door you can get net door things, get one and put it up, it will allow air in but not the cats

I had a cat, it never left my garden. I catproofed my fence and it could not jump on to the top of the fence. It is doable, and it is the responsibility of the cat owner.

You sound lovely, and exactly like my lovely next door neighbour. She planted beautiful roses and honeysuckle which grew up our shared fence spilling beautifully over our shared top- I have never had any issues with her cats. She is so considerate, she even offered to trim them but I was like no way, I am so pleased that your beautiful idea is stopping many cats using that fence (they can’t walk along it!), I will happily trim them, I do loads of gardening any way!

Your efforts with this will genuinely be appreciated so much by your lucky neighbours 😊

As of this afternoon he has now been spraying the actual cat. They’ve come back twice for two more sprays so it hasn’t deterred yet but we shall live in hope. We are in discussions about how much we can actually invest in other cat proofing measures as with two young kids and maternity leave on the horizon means money has to be managed carefully.

If your son starts killing cats then I imagine him going to prison will give you a lot more problems than a bit of cat shit.
You sound like you need locking up yourself quite honestly.

Three kids were arrested for killing a man today - that's what happens when atrocious parents tell their kids to torture things to death for fun. Be very careful about being psychos, a child killed a cat for fun in our town last year and trust me, social media has ruined her life!

Yes, that’s another thing to add to the list, assuming we have endless money to throw at the problem.

So are you claiming your cat never shat on someone else’s garden?

No, I'm saying lots of cats shit on every ones gardens! It's not hard to grasp basics here!

And, again, when posters tell you that they KNOW whose cats are shitting on their garden because they have witnessed it over and over, believe them. Don’t add insults to your repertoire.

Oh, you’re the stray cats enthusiast, should’ve known.

Unfortunately many people who own cats, do not care what the cat gets up to when it leaves their house.

I can assure I care very much what my cats get up to. I would much prefer it if they stayed safely in our garden (which is huge) and didn't wander off. I would much prefer it if other peoples cats didn't come into our garden. And I would very much prefer it if they didn't hunt - except for the rats, pigeons and magpies, they can hunt them!

But they are cats, so I cannot control what they do and don't do.

Then I can't control if your cat moves into my house 👍

tinyspiny · 11/08/2025 19:25

But they don’t rehome feral cats in residential areas so that is an irrelevance . Cats , even cats that roam would soon adapt to only having their own garden to roam in , shit in and kill things in .

I hate to break it to you but my cats were feral for the first 4 months of their life, they were born on the local steelworks, ferals can be homed anywhere depending on how likely the rescue thinks they are to adapt, you would never know that my cats were ferals, my male is a real house cat by his own choice. This is why I am asking people to sit back and understand that it's complicated when it comes to rescue cats.

It was a long time ago, so I cannot remember, but it was quite a substantial amount. We had a very large flat roof on a kitchen extension, covered in white gravel chippings, (which on old asphalt style roofs was supposed to protect them) and one day a local cat decided this was the perfect giant litterbox!! The stench wafted into the house, we went on the roof and removed all the poop, then over a course of a couple of months tried every anti-cat product sold in the local hardware stores and garden centres. None of them worked, we were still removing poop frequently, one smelt almost as bad as the poop (I think that was the garlic one). We never saw the cat, or I woukd have tried a water pistol, it must have been a nocturnal pooper. In the end we simply swept all the chippings off and washed the roof with a very strong solution of Flash, and it finally stopped.

This is sounds like my exact roof.
Did you have to replace the gravel up there after using the flash?

We have a small pitched roof (original) next to the flat roof. I've even found poo balanced on the very point now.

Its truly disgusting and stinks my whole house.

We are a terrace, so difficult to cat proof every entry point, and I don't own the fence that is the launch point from my end.

I wasn't talking to your OP, I was talking to you kiddy tantrum throwers? Your refusal to politely acknowledge the information I'm explaining about why there's cats about is so childish! You won't grasp fundamentals because it goes against your fake narrative.

There are no kids where I live. I hope the parents will be proud when they visit their little thugs in prison.

Lol at kiddy tantrums, your language is pure hyperbole and utterly ridiculous. Anyone would think you’re the leading cat expert. Hmm, you probably think you are….

‘Used to’ isn’t particularly relevant to roaming. Cats either like to roam or they don’t. It’s individualistic and largely a hormonal urge, particularly in males. You can’t predict the individual nature of a cat when you get it. You have the cat you have. An enriching home environment is great, but it doesn’t equate to the desire to roam.

They don’t wear collars. I am thinking a bell on the collar might deter them killing the birds? They have caught a couple of small bluetits.

Bells don't work. They just learn to keep them silent till they spring and it's too late.

Cat bibs work better, but I doubt they are going to make them wear them, and it wouldn't solve the other issues.

Cat spikes on the fence (if you have one) might work, and blocking other gaps. But some cats will still walk on them.

And properly spraying water at them, not just near them (you still probably won't get them anyway, but they're more likely to be deterred if they think you're serious about it). And/or running outside and hissing at them every time you see them. The local cats have much reduced their visits to our garden (and the sparrow-filled bush) since I consistently made it clear they weren't welcome.

Legally cats are allowed to roam, but the owners could be held civilly liable for their actions if they are persistent and dangerous/destructive. It doesn't happen that often though, so realistically it probably is your problem (though I agree it shouldn't be).

all I know is that it is perfectly ok for cats to be kept in a house with a catio / run or cat proofed garden and that way the owner of the cat can enjoy them ( like I do ours ) and the neighbours are not inconvenienced by them . Hopefully eventually it will be law .

This is shocking behaviour! There are far more decent ways to deal with unwanted cats in your garden than harming them!

And she's just suggested that it's fine to buy weapons for children so that they can shoot animals.
