Just that really - screen shot below.

mini skirts , cherries, twirling hair ?

am I a prude or are these just evidence of sexualisation of young women?

The cherries are fine. It’s not a reference to virginity in this case, it’s just the popular motif of the summer that companies are putting on everything because it’s selling. Last summer it was strawberries. Cherry Coach bag and Owala attached for examples.

It’s the pictures themselves that are the problem. Especially the first one, which really does look like something out of pornography. Vile.

A cherry print on a handbag on general sale does not carry the same connotations as a clip art cherry added to pictures of schoolgirls pouting and hair twirling in an attempt to sell their uniform.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/08/2025 16:15

I am just looking at the picture attached to the thread and honestly I don't see anything weird about it. They just look like school kids to me, I genuinely don't get why everyone thinks it's sexual.

MimiGC · 11/08/2025 16:21

Not ok, especially combined with faces full of make up.

CoffeeCantata · 11/08/2025 16:27

Doesn’t exactly say “Study hard for a serious career”, does it?

Nor do teenage girls look that part either when you can literally see their knickers out on the street.

The boys look smarter in their trousers and jacket. I wish girls would realise the disservice they're doing themselves in dressing in skirts like that. You couldn't dress like that at work therefore it is not appropriate for a formal learning environment.

greglet · 11/08/2025 16:41

These photos were taken in spring 2024, by the way.

BestZebbie · 11/08/2025 16:43

Hair twirling and cherries are quite teenage girl though, aren't they?

They always have been - 14yr olds reading Cosmo and Sugar back in the day were obsessed with how to twirl your hair and bite your lip meaningfully at your crush in Double Science, but by the time they went to Uni and had steady partners it had all kind of blown over?

PenelopeSkye · 11/08/2025 16:46

Just so so grim. Actually I was looking at clothes for me yesterday and I’m so sick of having to look at women in sultry sexy poses! I know it clearly works and sells clothes better than if someone was just stood there, but it just makes me roll my eyes we all have to go along with this!

I used to read More magazine- the one with the weekly sex position. We used to have a good laugh together.

Honestly why so shocked, does anyone remember being that age.

faffadoodledo · 11/08/2025 16:47

@ILoveWhalesbut here we have adults (whose job it is to manipulate spending habits) reinforcing the behavior.
I completely get that teens have always rebelled. It’s the adult, manipulative reinforcement that gets me.

Edited

That’s real children pushing boundaries as expected. This is a major retailer trying to flog cheap uniforms by impressing on young girls and society all round that the way girls look at school is seriously important and should be posey, fashiony, slim, seductive, made-up…

Fair enough

Start by not letting your child go out in a skirt where her arse and knickers can be seen. Is that not adult reinforcement to allow that.

I never remember girls dressing like that when I was at school.

Dressing like that is no more empowering than wearing a burqa or niqab. Both are designed with the wants and needs of men in mind.

"To be sussed is a must BUT sex under 16 is illegal!"

I remember those, but with hindsight I think they were a form of sex education for teenage girls. I remember they very much hammered home the importance of safe sex and consent and not doing it before it was legal. They included stuff like that because girls were interested and curious and it helped satisfy curiosity, answer questions and encourage girls to be safe.

I feel differently about an advert, by grownups, that depicts schoolgirls flirting and with cherries superimposed on them. It's obviously less graphic but it's also a totally different dynamic and motivation and objective.

Oh none of us were having sex at that age. We were turned on by it we laughed.

SorryAuntLydia · 11/08/2025 17:00

it’s pretty non standard as uniform. And does lean towards fetishising school uniform.

But I particularly hate the slogan! ‘Giving A star in style ‘ because that’s supposedly what’s important for girls rather than actually getting a real A star grade <massive sigh> (see also ‘girl math’ ). It’s just designed to diminish girls’ expectations.

likeafishneedsabike · 11/08/2025 17:01

Gross!

FunnyDays · 11/08/2025 17:02

Well, it attracts the parents who would buy NLs crappy clothes for their kids 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oldernotwizer · 11/08/2025 17:04

I think the bows are representing the ‘preppy’ look that is fashionable at the moment. Maybe the cherries too? Not sure about that one…

missymousey · 11/08/2025 17:04

I thought I looked like this at high school and that was 30+ years ago. Yabu to be bothered.

Exactly. I know it was graphic but it was really intended to educate girls about sex; I expect those problem pages were the only place a lot of girls felt able to turn to with their questions. It was just a completely different thing with a completely different agenda. There was even more of a need for sex education during the AIDS crisis too.

MaidOfSteel · 11/08/2025 17:05

You’re right, OP. The MAPs in our society will be enjoying this decline. The sexualisation of children is appalling.

lovescats3 · 11/08/2025 17:05

what fresh hell is this

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 11/08/2025 17:06

New look school trousers are excellent, they fit my dd better than any others we've found. Not keen on those adverts for all the reasons stated but needs must.

nomas · 11/08/2025 17:10

I'm often accused of being OTT about women's rights but I'm not seeing the problem here.
