Pyrex. There's another!

I think I’d say Vaseline for non-Vaseline branded petroleum jelly. England.

I'm English. I've lived a long time and never heard anyone use 'Colgate' for toothpaste.

As another child of the 60s/70s I can remember my mum and her friends having Tupperware parties. We kids loved it because there was always a nice buffet supper afterwards and if we had behaved and not made a nuisance of ourselves we could have some nice stuff from the buffet.

Never could understand as a child why they were all so interested in plastic boxes. However, as an adult I had a similar love affair with Lakeland. Oh and for a while we were keen geocachers so cunning little plastic containers became very desirable.

I agree with you there. Toothpaste is called toothpaste.

But Vaseline is more generic to me.

SprayWhiteDung · 11/08/2025 10:26

An awful lot of people use 'iPhone' as a catch-all when they just mean 'a smartphone' - as though Android phones couldn't possibly achieve the same basic tasks.

It's a bit like specifically telling people that you're driving off on holiday in the BMW; or that you put your Miele washing machine on for a cycle before you left home this morning.

Me neither!

I do use petrol instead of diesel though, I guess from calling it ‘the petrol station’.

Teflon is another brand name used (instead of polytetraflouroethylene or PTFE) although funnily enough doesn’t tend to come up in conversation!

tamade · 11/08/2025 10:37

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/08/2025 08:15

Stanley knife is a good one. I definiteky say that, but probably because Ive only ever bought and used that brand. Petrol isn't a brand name though. Its just an abbreviation of petroleum. Unless you mean you say it when you mean Diesel?

The petrol one is a factoid I have been carrying around for 30+ years, since visiting the Beamish museum probably. I have never questioned it. Anyway a quick search found this:

https://www.haltermann-carless.com/stories/petrol-how-haltermann-carless-invented-the-world-famous-name

It's not exactly a brand name but it was an invented word to market the newly invented product for the company.
As an example it's not as clear as sellotape
May I have half a point?

Haltermann Carless Petrol

Petrol: How Haltermann Carless coined the world famous name.

Petrol is a common term used all over the world. But do you know that the name was invented by Haltermann Carless in 1893?

I don’t call all plastic boxes Tupperware, but I do use biro, hoover, and fairy liquid for generic items . It’s the sort of thing that you can get taken to court over, hence if you ask for Coke in a restaurant you will often be told “”it’s Pepsi or rola cola or whatever “

Tinseltuttifruitti · 11/08/2025 10:43

labradormam · 10/08/2025 16:58

Tannoy (public address system).

Ive spent a lot of time in the US over the years and they won’t say tissue or hankie, they tend to say Kleenex (“hand me a Kleenex” etc etc).

I also noticed it with Levi’s a lot, they would often say “in the pocket of my Levi’s / that guy over there in the Levi’s” etc, whereas we would just say “jeans”. This was back in the 90s though, maybe with lots more jeans brands around now this wouldn’t be so common? Although brands were Wrangler were big back then as well, so I’m not sure if they used Levi’s to just mean Levi’s (instead of saying jeans), or if they meant it to mean any brand of jeans.

Levi's wouldn't really be used for jeans, but Kleenex, bandaids and chapstick are definitely standard usage.

I knew an older lady who had a few pieces of real Tupperware, it was like concrete compared to the flimsy stuff you get now.

SayDoWhatNow · 11/08/2025 10:51

I've heard "marigolds" and "fairy liquid" for generic rubber gloves and washing up liquid.

I also like hearing the different brand names that have got into general use in different countries. In Cairo, I have heard "Coleman" for cool box, "Datsun" for any pickup truck and "Chipsy" (Walkers equivalent) for crisps.

isthismylifenow · 11/08/2025 10:55

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 11/08/2025 09:46

Again, where and which country?! I’ve never, ever heard this mentioned. Are you American or something?

I'm South African.

There are more, but I am sure you would not get those as they are local brands. Any other Saffers on the thread will know exactly what I mean when I say Chappies, when I am referring to any bubblegum.

You need to come and visit me.

If you ask in the store what section you will find pants, they will direct you to the trousers department.

Much the same as if you ask for Colgate, they will just direct you to the general toothpaste section. 😂

SunnyPrague · 11/08/2025 11:21

Sellotape - for any brand of sticky-tape

user1497787065 · 11/08/2025 11:36

Vaseline is another. No one says must get some petroleum jelly for my chappped lips, dry cuticles etc.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/08/2025 11:36

soupyspoon · 10/08/2025 21:07

Is she thinking of a carpet sweeper?

Surely that's just referred to as a Ewbank?

JaninaDuszejko · 11/08/2025 11:45

Bandaid in the US but when I was younger it was always Elastoplast here.

NImumconfused · 11/08/2025 12:15

50 year old orange Tupperware still going strong in our house - it was quality stuff!

autienotnaughty · 11/08/2025 13:12

I googled it on safari (or other web browser)

I did not know this.

So I could have had proper tubberware all this time but instead kept buying things from BHS (RiP), Alders and then QVC

I wonder why they went out of business given theres quite a bit plastic tub market.

Allders? You sound suspiciously South London to me.
