@Gingernaut what is their real name?

I never use the word Tupperware. I use the word tub.

I do say hoover though.

Hold on, how does that work in conversation....

'theres going to be loads of left overs, bring some 'tub'

'store it in some 'tub'

'marinade it in some 'tub' overnight'

YABU. Only Tupperware is called Tupperware. I was raised around a lot of it. My mum was a Tupperware dealer. Other plastic storage containers are just that: plastic storage containers.

We do breville for toastie too.
Biro although I only buy biros

They are all biros though, just means ball point pen. Do you mean you only get Bic brand Biros ?

I have a Tupperware dealer too. It’s the local Chinese. I order a massive order when I’m needing a Tupperware top up. Delish.

The word 'a' comes in very useful here.

I would store something in 'a' tub. Or similarly, marinate someone in 'a' tub.

I guess if people wanted to, they could bring 'some tubs' or 'a tub' but I don't think I've ever said that to anyone.

And yes, I have heard people say 'a tupperware'.

But I don't see the point in using three syllables, when one will do (and it's also more accurate, as none of my tubs are actually Tupperware).

PestoHoliday · 10/08/2025 15:33

I only binned one of my mum's Tupperware bowls last year! It was 53 years old.

@x2boys - what was so good was that it was nearly indestructible. Didn't crack, buckle, melt, leak, split or warp. Kept it's colour without fading. Could go from freezer to microwave endlessly.

Like @OnlyMabelInTheBuilding I rely on Chinese takeaway containers now - the ones from my Dad's regular Thursday night takeaway that he keeps for me.

GandTtwice · 10/08/2025 15:38

I use Tupperware liberated from my mum when I moved out many years back supplemented by takeaway tubs. I really wish they'd bring back Tupperware over here - was it so long lasting that people just stopped having to buy more and the tupperware parties weren't needed anymore?

toiletpiper · 10/08/2025 15:39

@CalzoneOnLegs yes i'm sure i always buy Bic or rather accidentally steal them from work!

CalzoneOnLegs · 10/08/2025 15:42

Old Tupperware isn’t BPA free and should not be microwaved !

I agree that if you say the brand name of something, people know what you are doing or using.
If you said 'plastic food containers,' that is one heck of a mouthful, so it's easier to say Tupperware.
A lot of people say hoovering but rarely have I heard vacuuming

It's vacuuming in our house. I got a lecture about this from DS1 who pointed out why it's not hoovering unless you gave an actual Hoover. In his defence, he does a lot of the vacuuming (he's currently pushing for a Roomba).

squashyhat · 10/08/2025 15:46

Velcro is a trade name but I'm not sure what you would call it otherwise - fuzzy hooked tape? Grin Also Fablon, forever known to Blue Peter viewers as sticky backed plastic

Nourishinghandcream · 10/08/2025 15:47

Jeep as a generic name for any 4x4.
Transit for any type of medium sized van.

Hoover is the one that really gets me though 😖

WalkDontWalk · 10/08/2025 15:48

What you got there are 'commecial eponyms'.

See - hasn't been an entirely wasted day.

Sticky backed plastic that brings back Cosy memories
Didn't they also talk about double sided sticky tape?

HarryVanderspeigle · 10/08/2025 15:52

Love tuppeware. Have a few bits from boot fairs and always keep a look out.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/08/2025 15:54

Never had the stuff at home when I was a kid, so didn't even know what it was until I was 16 - my first boyfriend's Mum sold it and had cupboards full of every type imaginable (typical MLM where most of her sales were to herself). She was most put out when she overheard me ask him why everything had to be put into 'those stinky plastic boxes' and didn't they have real bowls or jugs because they made everything smell and taste disgusting.

The real offence was taken when my innocent teenaged gob then let out a 'Is it because your parents can't afford proper china or glass?'. She never forgave me for that.

Brownieshonour · 10/08/2025 15:54

Tupperware was the best.

ThirdStorm · 10/08/2025 16:02

Oh yes I say Tupperware despite never having owned any but I cannot bring myself to say hoover, I vacuum. I also buy sellotape so feel okay saying that!

Biro was trademarked. Whether it’s lost protection through general use I don’t know.

To hoover
Did hoover
I hoovered
I am hoovering

You're not hoovering. That's a brand name too. You're vacuuming.

And Mr Hoover apparently stole the patent for the first machine from.his friend Mr Spangler. So youre actually Spangling.

Or hovering when autocorrect has had its way!

arlequin · 10/08/2025 16:20

Weetabix, Shreddies, Rice Krispies (when buying the cheap ones from Asda)

Oh yes. The number of people on my local FB selling page that have a hover for sale. Or sometimes 'parts for a hover'.

I call self catering holiday rentals Airbnbs if I'm staying less then about 4 days even though I rarely use Airbnb to book them anymore.
