If someone were looking for a place to live and there criteria were -

”I’m looking for somewhere run down with a few ropey pubs”

LIGHTHEARTED

BologneseGurl · 10/08/2025 08:25

Reason I ask is because in the town where I lived in the mid - late 2000s there was an area I walked through regularly that was a bit like this and I’m nostalgic for those times.

Anyway, can anyone recommend anywhere like this? Grin

in not really bothered about school catchment areas or other local amenities !

I‘m not sure if it’s ‘unmumsnetty’ in particular, just bizarre criteria for anyone, whatever forum they use!

BallerinaRadio · 10/08/2025 08:27

I don't understand any of this

But sometimes people like these areas for nostalgic reasons perhaps or because they like a more ‘low key’ area iyswim

Sorry it was meant to be lighthearted

Don’t worry I was trying to be sort of semi lighthearted but it missed the mark.

im just nostalgic for an area like this. That’s all

You want a run down area with ropey pubs

I am guessing you also don’t have a sizeable budget

Twistedfirestarters · 10/08/2025 08:31

Less unmumsnetty more...odd

Nor do I

And it gets stranger with the follow up posts

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 10/08/2025 08:32

What location?

Roothewheel · 10/08/2025 08:32

No one is taking it seriously OP

We are just…. Baffled

Glitchymn1 · 10/08/2025 08:33

I get it- it’s not difficult to understand.

treesarealive · 10/08/2025 08:33

@BologneseGurl I get you! When it’s where you grew up, it’s easy to feel nostalgic for a place even if the place was run down.

Twistedfirestarters · 10/08/2025 08:33

I mean, it's not exactly a Mumsnet thing to not actively seek out a run down area to live in. Especially for reasons of 'nostalgia'.

Thingamebobwotsit · 10/08/2025 08:33

I kind of get where you are coming from @BologneseGurl. I grew up in such an area, and there is something quite comforting about the lack of pretension. And it does feel like home when I go back to visit. Small market town, or new build estate, it is not.

Would I go as far asking for recommendations based on those criteria? 😁 probably not. But if it was all I could afford then I might some more targeted questions.

Also, I think a lot of areas have ropey pubs now. The industry is struggling so much it is getting harder to split the difference, even in the more affluent areas.

Tbh this was really a lighthearted thread because of my nostalgia for a certain area I frequented in the mid to late 2000s - it’s got more to do with that than budget

but - yes the area I’m thinking off is affordable to buy compared to a lot but actually not to rent as much - private rentals posted there recently seem extortionate!!

but it does have a certain amount of anti social incidents etc

heldinadream · 10/08/2025 08:34

You're nostalgic for who you were back then and it sounds like the area represents a time in your life when you felt less responsible, less burdened with adult life.
Seems quite normal to me to have such feelings but the reality is if you lived in an area like that now a) it would be different because it's a different historical time and b) you'd still be the you that you are now, not the you that you were then, so it wouldn't be what it is in your nostalgic fantasy.
Soz. 😂

Lurkingandlearning · 10/08/2025 08:34

Find an area like that and go for a walk, go for a beer. Get the nostalgia out of your system that way because if you go and live there you’ll soon find out why your family moved.

If you need help finding one, go on Right Move or similar and set your preferred rent pretty low.

Willoo · 10/08/2025 08:35

Describes the NE perfectly tbh. I hate where I live.

SabrinaSt · 10/08/2025 08:36

I got your original post, OP. There’s some parts of Croydon I could direct you to that fit the bill!

MurdoMunro · 10/08/2025 08:38

I get you (I think). I kicked around in ropey areas in the 80s. I ran with artists, musicians, creative types and we gathered where accommodation was cheap and flexible and where we weren’t bothered so much by ‘polite society’. These places are all gentrified now and I do miss them, I live in one of them now (yes, hypocrite 🤣) and it’s not really my sort of tribe.

AbzMoz · 10/08/2025 08:38

Literally anywhere in the country - likely a few streets away from the main drag or in a nearby town to the main town.

I assume by ropey you mean sticky carpets, live karaoke and a meat raffle (all of which I see as hallmarks of a much loved community space). Has to be an independent rather than a chain. Ideally has a quiz where as a new timer you will likely get verbally abused (in good humour) if you score either v well or v badly.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 10/08/2025 08:39

I live in a sort of rundown area, but with only one pub and that's chock full of dickheads . I don't think there are that many pubs anymore like there were back in the day.
